Tanning accelerators

Hi

I use a sunbed once or twice a month to help with very mild psoriasis. I went to a salon on the weekend and the owner would not let me use the sunbed without buying a tanning accelerator. She said that there are new H&S regulations in place that state that all sunbed users must use a tanning accelerator as they will halve the number of sessions you need to get the desired tan. I explained that my intention wasn't to get a tan, but that the UV lights helps my skin condition, but she was having none of it and made me buy tanning accelerator anyway. I wasn't very happy as I think she was just trying to get some extra money out of me. Can anyone tell me if she was telling the truth?

I have not heard of the law changing,maybe it would be worthwhile calling CAB and asking them about this,This lady would be breaking the law telling you that you couldnt have a session without the tanning accelerator if it were intrue.I definately would look into this one.:irked:

I also had a look for you and could find nothing on the net.When I worked in a spa we offered tanning accelerators and explained the benefits but it certainly was not anything to do with H&S and this was quite a few years ago.

CAB stands for Citizen advice Bureau.They would be best equipped to tell you if any laws had changed and where you stand legally.This sounds like someone trying to rip you off if im honest though I could be wrong:green:

No a tanning accelerator just increases melanin production, so not more damaging.They are very popular in sunbed salons or spas and we sold a lot of them.HTH

I think Wales have different sunbed regulations to England, but it still sounds like a load of rubbish to me. In fact, I'd be worried about accelerator creams aggravating your psoriasis.

The simple solution would be for you to phone some local sunbed shops and see if they know about these 'new rules'

I have an update on this - i phoned the Trading Standards people and they said that she had told me a big fat porkie to get money out of me. Naughty, naughty. They will be paying her a visit as this is an offence. What a silly, short-sighted woman. I'll certainly not be going back there, so for the sake of £2.50 for a sachet of tanning accelerator she has lost a client.

I now go somewhere else, which turns out to be cheaper and get this - they GIVE away for FREE sachets of tanning accelerator to those who want them!!! Nice to know that there are some decent folks out there!
