At college a few years ago part of our cuticle work routine was to nip the cuticles off..........but from reading books....currently marian newmans (which is fantastic btw) it says you shouldnt nip it off unless they are really bad...then you can do it the first time and after that just push them back. So I was wondering what is everyone elses veiws on this.......do you always nip cuticle away or do you think you should always just push it back?

At college we were told only to nip if ABSOLUTELY necessary. Apparently it encourages overgrown cuticles if done too often.:)

Are we talking nipping the eponychium here or cuticle which is on the nail plate? If you mean eponychium then I was taught to nip this to tidy it up but hated doing it and so never did. It's way to easy to do it wrong and nip someone especially when your inexperienced like I was at the time. I had some really sore fingers while we practiced on each other at school.

I was taught only to nip hangnails so that's all I'll do.

I've seen a client who 'trims' her cuticles, and they are so thick and callused now because of it. I refused to cut them for her and she hasn't been back since! I explained my reasonings of course, and suggested a better course of maintanence, but I guess it wasn't good enough for her....oh well!

Yep I only trim if it is essential for a good finish, and if I do it the first time I wont have to do it again, only push the cuticle back!

xxxxxxx:hug:

I only nip if absolutely necessary. I probably wouldn't even call it nipping, it's more like a trim to tidy up.
Cuticles are there to protect, if we nip to much, there is the chance we give someone a sore one and cause bacteria to enter.
Ouch!!:eek::cry:

I only nip off hangnails. I was taught to never, ever, ever nip off the eponychium

If you never nip...how do you make their nails look really tidy? If someone has really overgrown eponychium and its really hard say...is just pushing it back enough?

i only nip if they have really bad nails and the cuticles ares so overgrown.
If its a bride for her wedding day then i would also nip them as they look much better and will be photograped.

but generally if you put lots of cuticles remover on and take your time removering and pushing the cuticlesback you will also get a good result.

You also have to remind the client that it has taken some time for the build up of cuticle to happen so i won't be removed altogether but withafter care and al least 3/4 maintenance manicure you will be on the right track. a great way of selling a course of manicures.

sometimes i recommemd that the client only has clear varnish one so that you can spend extra time on the cuticle work, this is also great as the client understand you want the nails to look better and have her best interests at heart.
hope that helps
Natasha

You prescribe aftercare and retail the products to do it. From the CND range the combination of Cuticle Eraser and Solar Oil works wonders on an overgrown eponychium - within 2 weeks of daily use the client will see a transformation.

Nipping can actually make the problem worse....it makes this skin tougher...like a scar infact....it can also lead to infections.

Using the product like mentioned above will help the skin to shrink back and stay tidy.

The only 'bits' that I nip off are when Ive pushed the cuticle back, there are bits sticking up that are quite long, Im not talking centimetres here just mm's. I just nip them off, Im not touching living tissue at all!

Is this still ok?

I was taught that as long as you just cut off 'stray bits' and don't touch living tissue - thats OK - HTH:)

Thanks Adele, that what I have been nipping, those darn stray bits!!

I would say use oil, like Solar oil or in my case EzFlow Essential Oil Plus. I also used a cuticle remover recommended by my cnd tech in Oslo which helped my own eponychium to look much nicer over time. I have a member of family who insisted I do it because her regular lady does it every time she goes and to be honest I could tell and refused, sticking to my guns and told her why. They to me seemed quite almost calloused, like scar tissue. I only ever trim hangnails or a bit of cuticle that might poke underneath the eponychium that I couldn't get any other way.

I'm still not entirely sure all of us are thinking the same thing, I would like I said nip cuticle off the nail plate if its stubborn but not the eponychium. I hope I didn't missunderstand your original post

I only nip if necessary otherwise just push back.

I agree, I hate nippers with a passion! When we were training at college I used to wince every time they came out!
