Hello everyone

Has anyone else experienced twisted head for this amount of time?
I have seen lots of doctors ,had MRI scans, took lots of treatement ,even spoken to dystonia research people who confirmed they had a lot of calls from manicurists dealing with this problem...
They tell me it can be 1 of 2...torticollis or torticollis spasmodic...
This thing has changed everything for me...makes me see things in a very different light and even thinking of training for something else...as soon as i get better of coursse...at the moment i am still fighting with it...and my bussiness is in stand by...

Would love to hear from u xxx

I've never heard of this, could you explain a bit more of what it is please

How miserable for you .... I can see why what we do would possibly aggravate the condition, but not cause it. I have never in 25 years seen this condition as prevalent in the nail industry. I hope you make a recovery.

i had this condition when i was still at school so i wasnt even playing with my own nails back then.i thought it maybe had something to do with my ears as i had loads of problems with my ears and had to have several operations to help fix them but i dont think they actually gave me a definate reason as i dont think they really knew.
i remember how painful it was so i really feel for you.i hope you get better soon.x

Well the people who i have seen say it was triggered by my job...a build up of bad posture with bend neck and also long hours...doing the same thing...
And seriouslly it wasnt me who said they had received a lot of calls from manicurists experiencing torticollis...it was someone who my bf spoke with from the dystonia research center...
Anyway just wanted to share this with u because it is not easy to suddentlly feel like everything is collapsing arround u...all u have managed to achieve so far...

Thing is i can move my head but when i have to look down it gets tricky...it feels like my muscles get kinda blocked and i need to look up again to release the tension...it is not nice at all :(

ive got this at the moment. i first suffered with this in the middle of november last year. i had 4 weeks off work as i couldnt straighten my head and i was told the worst thing i could do was sit around (not much good for doing nails and working in a call centre).

i think mine was caused by sleeping funny on it one night. the best way to describe it is a severe neck sprain.

as i say im still suffering with it now. ive just learnt now to cope with it. it doesnt really stop me doing anything, its just a bit painful when turning me head as i cant turn it as far as i used to be able to and it doesnt help when my bf tries to play fight and headlock me!! i started taking tablets for it and followed all the home physiotheraphy exercises i was given, but found it didnt really help so i stopped the tablets when i got to the end of my course.

i know how painful it is. hope yours gets better soon xx

I feel very bad for you ... but I still do not agree it is the job, but more the bad posture which is at fault.

Can you not get some kind of ergonomic chair or back brace that forces you into the correct posture?

Secretaries are all taught from the start how important good posture is to their well being. I have always taught nail techs in my classes from the start how to sit correctly to do their job too. It is vital.

I trully am someone who takes care of that...try and keep my back as straight as possible...and make sure i dont sit down for more then an hour...even though i was doing sets of nails i would find something to get up for...i got a feeling that the bent neck was the problem...reserching what exactlly happens when u keep your head bent like that for longer periods i found out that the higher the angle u keep your head bent the higher the pressure on the muscles responsible for that move...they r supporting something like 6 times the weight of your head...
I have to say during the holiday madness i didnt do much of stretching exercizes between clients...
I am just thinking out loud trying to find out the reasons why this happened...and maybe make others aware of the things they can change so they dont experience this...

Did the physiotheraphy work for u?Are u back on doing nails?

Thank u xxx

Torticollis is actually a very common condition, babies suffer from it a lot (it was thought my son had it at one stage).........it is a shortening of the neck musclethe only treatment I know of is physio and plenty of it...........I am led to believe tho that torticollis itself once sorted doesn't usually present itself again.
Sorry I can't be of more help, hope u feel better soon xxxx ;-)

well im still suffering with it now. tbh i dont think the physio helped, as my neck keeps relapsing. i was due to go back to work 3 times during my time off at the end of last year. ive had to go back to work as i couldnt afford to take any more time off. i still do nails now, but i try to space each appointment as much as possible ( i work from home daytimes so i have the flexibility to be able to do this). my neck is alot better than it was as when it first happened i couldnt straighten my head at all for about a week xx

I am really glad to hear that xxx

I've have just been diagnosed with spasmodic torticollis, i have been put on medication, which has no effect, but due to see the specialist again in April. I think when i go to hospital in April they are going to put a injection in my neck which i will have every three months.
It has never affected me when doing nails, if anything i don't even notice it when i am concentrating. I also think it can be very frightening when you read about it on the internet. The one bit of comfort reading your thread is i'm not alone lol..xx

How come it has not affected you doing the nails?Because in this particular condition your head twists to one side...I am wearing a collar at the moment to help relax my muscles and stoped taking all the medication...i really hope its gonna go and that is not torticollis spasmodic because i dont wanna live with this for the rest of my life...
My doctor is going to get me an appointement to see a consultant...
Please tell me how did it start and how how is it manifesting ...also after how long they realized it was torticollis spasmodic?
Thank u xxx

Mine started in the summer, it was as if my head was being pushed to the left and my neck was hurting , i let it go on until the october than went to doctors, who had never come across it so referred me to a specialist, whom i so in January, going back in April to see another specialist for maybe treatment with injections. But i can say honestly at the moment i'm ok doing treatments, so maybe i haven't got it that bad. Although i did read you can recover or go into remission for a few years. it must be awful having to wear a neck brace, really feel for you:hug: Get to see your specialist as soon as possible..xx

Thank u for your answer xxx
