Hi ladies/Gentlemen

I have a client who has a thumb with a vertical split. Not infected, has had it for years and usually covers with an acrylic overlay from a local NNS. This overlay has come off but she has requested having it again.

Is this really the best option for her? Im thinking it would protect the split from possible infection and from getting worse, torn etc. But is there anything that can be done to permantly repair it?

thanks

ETA: I will be giving her a bottle of solar oil too. As this has Jojoba oil in that can penetrate the nail drawing in Vit E (i did some research!) would it be enough as i believe the split could be caused by not enough moister?

I have a client that has this and she has a gel overlay on it and its fine...you wouldn't know there was anything wrong with the nail while the gel is on...but when the gel is removed and after a while the split returns.

I would def overlay it.

I have this on my ring fingers and as long as they have gel on they are fine.:)

a vertical split in the surface of the nail plate is usually indicative of prior trauma to the matrix (birth place of the nail) once this has occured more often than not it is permanant as the matrix will not regrow and heal...

A split like this is generally best of having an overlay to protect it... solar oil helps the split from peeling, but will never stop it... sorry to say...

My index finger has permanant damage from 'peeling' up large amounts of layers as a nail biter in my youth... the surface of this nail peels and splits - has done for 15 yr's + and shows no sign of ever recovering...

I have something similar on my thumb its not a split but a visable line which is very weak and splits virtically at the f/e if banged, I overlay it and its keeps it strong and in one piece.

I have had a couple of clients with this.
The split seems to show on the nail plate as a line down the whole plate, but when it gets to the free edge, it just splits in two.
As Envy said, these kind of splits are most likely down the client having done some damage at some time in their lives, to the nail Matrix, which is the blue print of the nail & where the nail is born from.
If the Matrix is damaged, say by trapping in a door (as I have done) this can damage the blue print of the nail and it will permanently grow abnormally.

An L&P or Gel overlay is best to keep the nail protected and stop the nail splitting. The use of Solar Oil will benefit the nail & overlay, but would not stop the problem occuring, as it's a permanent disfiguration of the nail from trauma, most likely.

That is exactly what mine is like.

Strangely enough it is on my 'ring' toes as well:eek:

I have a nail that splits like that. I keep acrylics on. This is usually a result of a systemic problem or a nail injury. Highly recommend your client keep some sort of overlay on at all times.:)
