Lots do nail art on polish and use water based paints. A good quality top coat should make it all sit nice if the water based paint is truly dry.

You can use water based paint (airbrush paint is water based) then add top coat but the paint must be absolutely dry or you will get crackling. You must do this very quickly or you will drag and ruin the design. You need to learn to 'float' the top coat over the design without disturbing it.

i would personally sugest doing all decorative painting with water based acrylic paints, that way it is also really simple to wipe off and start again if it goes wrong.

okay but can you use water base or acrilcs on nail poilsh??? since its not a rough surface??

Yes ... people do it all the time.

I think you mean that the surface of the varnished/enameled nail you are painting the design on is slippery for the water based paint/acrylic paint and it slides about on top & it's hard to get the paint to grab, am I right?

I too have found this to be a pita!

I will watch this thread & see what is suggested. Perhaps trying something like a coat of 'Sticky' CND base coat OVER the enamel before the paint, if it's sticky, it may grab - will go and try later as I'm wearing polish just now.
one thing that springs to mind is that the paint could be a bit too thick & need watering down?

I also have this problem with some of my water base paints, half of my paints are ok and will 'grab' hold of the polish and the other half won't, esp my glittery ones i bought in little pots with the other water based ones, they just slip around the nail. Its a bit like painting DIY gloss over a non pourous surface, it just seperates onto a big glupy puddle! :green: (i know, i have tried it lol)

The 'sticky' layer is a good idea, i will try that one thanks x

I think it depends entirely on the quality of the acrylic paint.

The better pigmented paint does a better job ... airbrush acrylic paints do the best job IMHO .. many paints from hobby stores and cheap paints do not.

If you are going to create art .. then buy the best quality paints so that you don't let your work down. The best nail artists do not use naff paints.

thats abosolutely my opinion too.

i try to keep to airbrush paints because they are thin but highly pigmented.

you can really tell the difference between good quality and lower quality paint, but not until you've tried them.

if in doubt, just buy one colour and test it before splashing out on a whole load of paints.

I had bought mine from a well known online nail art store and they wern't too cheap either, not for the size of them anyway. But like i said some were good, others were not. Money wasn't wasted thou has i have a 11 yr old boy who loves doing art. :)

I bought mine from a reputable local art store, where my hubby who is a very good artist in acrylics, watercolours & oils recommended & came with me ( he was even on telly once on an art programme).
The products I bought were high end, but I still have this problem with the paints sliding about.
I think it really is a case of needing to be thinned out a bit.

it does all depend as well i believe on the polish you are painting onto, some seem to take paint better than others, i have never had a problem with my paints though x
