I wonder if someone could help me. I've been training to become a beauty therapist for a while, and I only have waxing left to finish my Level 2.
The only problem is that my local college would only accept a male student if I had a model for the practical aspects, as they don't expect the female students to be models for male students and vice versa.
Is that what normally happen to male students? Isn't it discrimination? And what I should do, as I need waxing qualification to move on to a Level 3?

Thank you!

Try sending a private message to Zoe on here who will I am sure offer you a certified course in waxing and she is based in Reading. Other than that try Andy Rouillard at Axiom Bodyworks, he is in Basingstoke.

Im a male therapist and never had this problem i only had to provide my own model for bikini wax as there was odd numbers in the class. However I had to participate in all other treatments as a model too

Im a guy and I did Level 2 last year and I didnt have any problems at all.
We practised on each other and one of the girls said I could do her 'intimate' area, which all went fine.
My other half is doing level 2 this year and its been the same for him too, apart from the fact that everyone in his group is volunteering for him to wax them because hes soooo good at it and "doesnt hurt" when he does it.

As far as what you should do...
Have you made good freinds on the class? Will any of them volunteer for you do to it on them?
It may feel like discrimination to you, BUT remember that it is a female dominated industry and male students are few and far between; so its maybe just a case of them college not quite knowing how to deal with it... do you know what I mean??!!!
Hang in there fella, it will be worth it when you qualify and then you can do things the way YOU want to do them!!!

I qualified in the mid 90's (HND in Beauty Therapy), and never had an issue with this at college. I think the college should at least ask the people on the course whether they would mind, rather than assuming they will, and if not they should be in a position to help you find or provide a model. It's rather sad really that in our so-called progressive age we still have such narrow-minded attitudes.

Tbh i think its just all nonsense and i agree that its down to the individual model to decide.....There is lots of females that find it daunting to have a male doctor / nurse /therapist and then there is also lots that find it actually more comforting to have the opposite sex perform the treatment.....I dont think the college should apply any rules as it depends on the models if they are comfortable with it........
Plus if you are a model you know students are going to look at you...but only look at your hair and how to remove it....no one is really interested in the person or the body...we all just watch how the hair growth is and how to remove the hair best without causing discomfort....l:hug:

I think this is really unfair! I cant add anything to help really but have you asked the girls on the course if they would mind? If you find they dont mind perhaps approach the college informing them of this and ask why it would not be acceptable if there were willing female models. I am female and wouldnt find it a problem. If your working in a salon you will deal with both male and female clients and if someone is uncomfortable being waxed by a man they just wont book with them, it should be the same with models- if they dont feel comfortable being waxed by you then they just wont volunteer themselves.
I was trained in basic waxing with my level 2 but only trained to wax a female, i was told if i wanted to wax men i should take a further course after, that may be incorrect but if not then would you need to find a female model anyway?
Good luck with finishing your course, hope you get it sorted

Thanks guys, all sorted. Just been accepted in Leamington Spa and will be finishing my level 2 very soon, as they are happy to find clients that dont mind a male therapist. Still a shame that gender seems to be a problem sometimes, but never mind. I'm over the moon! Thanks again, lots of love.

Well done! There are some *excellent* male therapists out there though (e.g. Andy Rouillard, Fozzyo, Martin Duffy etc) so well done you for following your dream!

Cough! :green:

Thanks Ruth. :)

It is an absolutely nightmare for us boys, I did my training over two years ago now and it was even harder to find somewhere then!

The attitude of so many training colleges and academies is quite frankly disgusting! I did my training one to one and have done bikini line waxes on girls no problems! I wouldn't do a Braz or Hollywood ... that just scares me quite frankly.

But male therapists are slowly growing in numbers, and one day the colleges will actually get into the 21st century realise the market is there, and also start teaching with 21st century techniques and products.

Good luck with the training and Wax On!!

Oddly enough, when I went for my training in the mid 90's they were only too pleased to have a male therapist on the course - maybe we're getting less progressive as a society!

All my other training was fine ... just the waxing.

Maybe more men should get qualified as waxing trainers? That should help solve the problem :)

I run MALE ONLY THERAPIST courses so give me a call if you'd like to chat about training. xx
