I am thinking of doing an NVQ waxing course at college but have seen another waxing course that is BABTAC accredited and approved by The Guild. Is this qualification as recognised as an NVQ? Not sure how it all works so any advise would be great.

An NVQ is a different qualification. My courses and many others, have the option for you to go on and do an NVQ if you want to. This doesn't make it better, just a different option.

The most important things are if you can get insured after, which if they're BABTAC accredited, you will do, and above all, the standard of training. Having a piece of paper doesn't make you good at what you do, it just makes you qualified. Hope that helps. xxx

Hi There an NVQ is a National Vocational Qualification so if you're looking to use the skill in a salon then an NVQ is best as this is what employers will look for, if it is for your own home or mobile business then as long as it is recognised by one of the insuring bodies it will be fine. This is most important as if something went wrong you'de need insurance. I am with Babtac and they are very good. Hope this helps.Lisa

Hey, I recently achieved my SVQ in waxing also as i feel this is more a recognised qualification. I work in a salon and also do mobile, i'm also insured by babtac.

All the best,
Regards,

I did a VTCT in waxing not sure if thats a good qualification or not ? does anyone know im guessing its ok as it was at my local college think it was about a 12 week course x

Hi

Ring 01727 768559 - Waxing Course she does small groups 1/2 persons so that you get a lot more practical. Really happyful. Cost is £195.00 for the day and I know she's offering 10% off at the moment. Course has been
accreditated by BABTAC and The Guild.

Good Luck:)

The problem sometimes with college NVQs is that you don't always get the attention that you need and more often than not therapists are turned out having only been observed doing a partial leg/undearm/bikini etc and so yes, whilst you will get an industry recognised qualification it may not necessarily make you a better waxer than someone who has taken a private waxing/facial/whatever course.

Do your research well before you decide which way you go but be sure that the course is accredited and that you will receive a certificate that will enable you to get insurance.

Having said all of that not all college training is bad I know but the majority of what I have experienced has been mediocre. A few years ago I volunteered as a wax model at my local college and had a bikini and underarm wax and not once did the tutor come anywhere near the girl who was waxing me and I had to guide her in technique etc.

I know that I am a good waxer and indeed teacher as many have told me in the past but am not one usually to shout about it so you make your own decisions based on informed and researched choices.

Go on personal recommendation and speak to people who have actually trained with the trainer/company that you are interested in. Also, be wary of testimonials on websites as they could be made up.

You will see a lot of people with wonderful websites claiming that they are excellent trainers.....but a lot of it is complete fabrication.

Also, never trust a company/trainer who bad mouth other trainers just to sell their own courses.

I think that trainers at larger colleges get a bad press. They have been in the beauty industry for years and hats off to them. They work bloody hard and they have a strict criteria and guidelines to work to and little time, so it really isn't their fault a lot of the time. I was working at Excel this week and I had tutors from many colleges tell me that they would love to learn and teach new techniques but they're not allowed to.
