Hi, i was just wondering if it was legal to work doing nails from home? do you still pay tax? or how does it work? ... when i qualify to do nails, my friend asked me to work in her salon, but now im thinking maybe it would be best for me to work in a office in the mornings, and do nails from home in the afternoon/evenings? .. what do you think works best? and for those of you that work from home, do you get clients, or is it mostly friends of the family ect,.. ?

thanks !!!!!

I love working from home. Yes you do have to do a tax return but you can earn 5 thousand-ish before this. Also you can subtract from your earnings the amount you pay for stock, training etc. I have been mobile and worked from home for a few years now, its not even like work, its like a hobby you get paid for. Most of my clients are friends and family but lots of the friends have came from them being clients first. Its such a sociable, enjoyable job. I do get at least one new client every couple of weeks through recommendations so you would build up a clientelle through friends and family.
It did take me a few years to go solely self employed, i did work part time at first so that i had a definate income.
I do think some salon experience is beneficial though HTH X

Hi, I work from home.
You would still need to register with the inland revenue for tax and national insurance tho.
working from home is better for me as i now have a dog and she needs time spending with her. You can choose your hours too, whether to work full or part time.
There are not as many overheads either like rent.

No overheads working from home. It is great but make sure you do your tax return and most importantly you will need a special treatment licence (you usually apply to your local council) if you want to operate from ur own place...Good luck:green::green::green:

wow, all sounds so good :D i really think maybe i will do this when i qualify! :) any more of what you do, or ideas, what you prefer, keep them coming :D nice to hear what you all do :p

thanks again!!!!

I know different councils have different criteria, some people have to pay for planning permission, some dont, you need to show you have good parking and your buisiness wont cause a nuisence.
I was one of the lucky ones I just called my council and asked and got the ok over the phone, but I know of other geeks who have had a nightmare with their council, and have had to wait a long while and had to pay a lot of money for planning permission just to have their property looked at...x

Is all this Council business just for nail enhancements or is it for other beauty treatments too? Can't understand what theplanning permission is for...

for all beauty buisiness, its just for them to come look at your house basically, and see if the property is suitable. Like I said not all councils do it, I think it depends on your area, some are just money hungry I think.

Blimey! Don't think I'll be doing that then. I have a table set up in the front bedroom with lamp, chairs and kit etc., and was thinking of trying to get appointments from home but not if it's going to be complicated. Getting fed up of lugging all my gear about mobile already, especially when it's wet and cold.

Hi,once I decided I wanted to work from home, I phoned my local council who told me to put it in writing which I did. they sent out a letter wanting to know a few more details about the business and parking etc all straight forward stuff. the council sent an evaluation officer round to see if I needed to pay business rates (which I did). you can also ask for a health & safety pack so you know what needs to be in place to work from home. good luck if you decide to work from home.

How much can you expect to have to pay in business rates or does it depend on whether you have dedicated rooms to your business and things?

that sounds complicated!!! hopefully where i am they are fine with it!!! fingers crossed, really cant be bothered going through all of that to work at home :)

Depending on your area, number of rooms (size) where you have your nail station, therapy couch etc, stock etc, walk in clients, near to the town can cost up to a thousand pound. the price is worked out on the size of the whole area being used.

I think you also need to inform your mortgage company and insurance company as well..x

Oh forget that then... think I need to get a job in a salon! Far too much hassle. I agree with you katiejane... it's a lot of fuss isn't it.

yes so much fuss!!! its a shame as it sounded so perfect at the beginning of this forum post haha, :)

Yes you pay tax and NI and you need Public Liability insurance wherever you work. I have clients rather than friends and family but to get them you need to advertise.......

Without wishing to sound harsh, it depends on how you view your future job/career/hobby! If you are looking to build a business working from home, choosing your own hours and making your own money then no it's not a lot of hassle. If you want a bit of a giggle with a few mates and some pin money on the side then I suppose it probably is.

Plenty of geeks work from home successfully, and plenty of us are mobile. Being mobile is hard work (I've done it for 4 years) but the rewards are awesome - I've built my business from nothing, I work around the needs of my family and my clients, I make my own money and I control my own destiny. IMO that's worth 'lugging a few boxes around'.

If you want a serious career in nails there will be bigger hurdles in your way than permission from the council to work from home. It's up to you how you deal with them.

I agree totally vetty is is very hard to make a business work. I also have contract work I do mobile as not all my clients can get to the salon so I go to them but it is worth it in the end. I love being mobile and I love working from home.

Vetty has made some very good points.

but surely if you are just doing nails from home part time, max 2 people a day, you dont need all this checked out, might be a silly question, or even wrong question, but what happens if i just dont call the council?? ..... of course il pay tax and all, ...
