I am really irritated at nail salons who are anything but professional.
Being a cosmetology and nail tech instructor, I hear a lot of horror
stories from clients and students. Today, a beginner student came in
asking about Gel nails. She and her cousin had went to a nail salon and
ask for gel nails. She asked me to look at them as she didn't think she
had recieved Gel's. She was charged extra for Gel nails and given
acrylics! This gave me an opportunity to discuss professionalism with her,
and to explain the difference between "cheap prices and quality work".
We will begin covering Gel's next week, but in the mean time, I am sick
of hearing this story over and over again. It makes me want to place an
ad in the paper stating "These people are rip off's!" But, due to my job,
I can not do that. Just had to rant.......:irked:

Aren't Gel's in the acrylic family....??

Hey huni,
we have the same over here in the UK too.....Some not so reputable nail salons will do the same here, a new client of mine went to a salon and asked for gel nails and what did she get?
L&P application and then a gel top coat over it, they charged her extra because Gel Nails are £5 more on their menu. A right blooming cheek and trading standards are not amused. She asked for gel nails not gel coated nails.
Its like going to a jewellers and asking for a gold ring and then going home and finding out its cheap crappy tin with a gold coating. This comes under trade discription laws.

Its best just to educate those that come through your door. The news will get round, slowly but surely, the worm will turn huni, just you wait xxxxx

All systems are part of the 'acryclic family', UV Gel, L+P and Fibreglass/silk wraps.

A lot of NSS (non standard salons) scam their clients by saying that they're giving them gel when in fact what they're doing is applying L+P or MMA as the body of the enhancement and then giving their clients a gel top coat.

All you can do is educate your clients (and/or students) as to the practices of the NSS and hope that they listen to you.

I see this quite frequently and as the nail wearling public don't really know the difference, they just go with it and really believe they are wearing gel when 9 times out of 10 it's MMA acrylic.

Keep on plugging that education of your students and clients

Abigail,
i dont really agree. Here in Ireland most clients dont know the difference between Gel and a french paint !!
I am NOT KNOCKING Irish techs or the Irish client-we are in my opinion fairly similiar to the average tech and client.
But a lot of nail techs here do a Gel Course as it is a shorter course, and a quicker way to become a nail tech.I feel that this leads to a misconception, that because more people offer Gel-it has to be more popular or better.

Most Gel clients will tell you that what they love most is the SHINE.
And basically what is underneath they havent a clue?
The skill in L& P ( acrylic) can be so versatile and creative, that i think it is unfair to knock it because the tech used a UV gel topcoat to finish the enhancement and give the client the strength they need coupled with the shine they like.
I am beginning to think that in the U.S.A a snob element is creeping in regarding acrylics. That basically they are s...t whereas Gel is super up -to -date and cool.
A bit like years ago when i would not have porcelain on my nails-i would only have SILK! !!
And what did i know?
I do not think that your students have been conned-i think the nail tech did what she did because
A-- she thought it perhaps was a stronger service for this individual.
B--she did not know how to do Gel Nails

And the moral of this story is-as a nail tech you should be able to perform at least 2-3 systems so you can mix and match to customise each client or individual.

I run into this all the time. I can't stand it. It's almost impossible to run a reputable business when you have other shops offering "gels" when they aren't. I spend more time explaining what gel services really are then doing them.:(

Mrs O, I do not believe Abigal is saying acrylic is crap or any such thing.
I think what is being said is that people are passing off their work as something that it is not and they are charging for something that the client is not receiving.
They are telling their clients porkys!

We get a lot of tourists in the summer wanting their rebalances done. So often they come in saying they have gel on when quite clearly it isn´t, it´s l&p. So we have to explain to them how some places work in the UK. But what gets me is that they not only charge extra for it, give them the wrong products, but they say to have gel because it is better for their nails! So all round they are telling porkies
