Advice needed sorry long post..

hiya ...
up until recentely ive left a lot to my stylist as i felt abit nervous doing it in my salon as if it went wrong it be me etc( hope that makes sense :o)
but ive bit the bullet and have been doing mainly extensions and weaves evening and late night and love seeing clients happy.
anywhoo we had a client today really nice woman she was afro-carribean and had extensions and wanted it out and hair relaxed... which was fine i did it for her .
i asked stylist to blow dry and set for her but she really had difficulty and client hair was really long and easy to do imo. i went for lunch and after an hour she was still combing out her hair
so i had to take over. Client then she said she didnt want her to her set and asked me to do it. which ive never done and explained to her but she said it was fne to do it ayway.

i did it and it was fine. i was really happy with myself lol...
my stylist is actually really really good with no probs so far but she really struggled yesterday.... she obviously cant do every type of hair which is understandable as alot of people cant.. so why say she can..almost like she is trying to prove she can do everything.
client booked in for her weave on friday but she wants a victoria beckham cut when she has her full head weave ...(not sure what style miss beckham has now as she has a million of them) but client says its very short.
so far people have wanted it longer then their actual hair so i just blend and trim as norm. but not a cutting expert... so i was trying to book when my stylist is there so she can finish it off but client says she doesnt want her to do it and for me to do it all..

how would you deal with this?

also at the end she gave me basically of the cost of her treatment as a tip which i was really surprised. she kept saying how happy she was etc with what id done for her and was really thankful...
my stylist then asked how much did she tip her (as she saw she gave me quite abit more) which was nothing.. as she obvioulsy wasnt happy with her performance..
now when she gets her tips thats hers but she honestly expected to me split my tips with her.

Well speaking from the client point of view .. I'm not a hair stylist but I am a weekly hair client ... I give my tip to the person I want to thank.

I think the client made it abundantly clear that for whatever reason her confidence was in you and you performed the service. If you FEEL the other stylist deserves something then fine .. give her something .. but it would be a gesture from you not the client and it is certainly not her RIGHT to have it.

Tricky one, as the stylist did some work on her too.
Please don't let a client drive a wedge between you and your stylist. Not every hairdresser "gels", or can do, every client. There have been times that I have had to defend exceptionally talented stylists.
As for cutting a weave short in a beckham type cut, I cant help you there as its not my area of expertise. If you feel you cant do sommething, its far better to admit it, and refer the client to a stylist who can.

If neither of you are trained up in Afro Carribean hair products and treatments , then you are taking a great risk.... as Afro Carribean hair is a specialist area. Also.... Afro Carribean hair is far more prone to breakage.

What relaxer treatment did you use ? was it just for the root regrowth ? also what chemical treatments had been used on her hair before hand ? did you perform compatibility tests ?

A trained hairdresser has to take a separate NVQ Afro Carribean unit to perform these services .... it sounds like your stylist or yourself .... are not trained up in afro carribean hair units ?
Afro carribean hair is very prone to breakage especially when using lye or no lye chemical straighteners

Your hairdresser is very wise to not take this client on board as your stylist isn't qualified in Afro Carribean treatments ...
but if you take her on yourself .... and something goes wrong ! .... this lovely nice woman knows for certain she can sue the A** off you ... as you have explained to her you are not trained within this area....and she knows you should not be doing it ,

now when she gets her tips thats hers but she honestly expected to me split my tips with her.

My advice is ... not to do any more to this Womans hair at all ... as I said ... alarm bells are ringing .... as something could go drastically wrong and she has everything on her side to potentially sue you !!...

hi.. hope ur feeling better i didnt say i cant do afro-carribean (afro-carribean is my area but im talking weaves,extensions,relaxing,curly perming, tong etc).
im just not expereinced in the colouring,cutting,setting side of things (afro or euro) .. maybe i didnt write it clearly...

its the client who feels the stylist cant cut her hair and has asked me to do it not the stylist saying she wont do it...

and yes her relaxer came out perfectly fine and have never had any complaints /problems before.

but your right about afro hair breaking easily..as my hair breaks by every little thing. i ask clients to bring their own as their is so many out their. as what i use personally may not suit them and there ok with that.

hi i think your right i feel they maybe just didnt gel or click with each other.... my stylist really talks makes converstation etc but yesterday she wasnt really (and was noticable as her boss). where client was really talkative with me i guess that might be why...

anywhoo.... im not going to attempt her cut. as im no where confident enough...
i think she has doubts because she was struggling to blow dry etc.. and did make abit of mess of it.
and as i took over obviously feels more confident in me.
but i can honestly say she is exceptionally good at cutting,colouring (basically things i cant do) she was upset about client saying no to her doing it.
we make a good team as what she has less expereince in i do have and vicer versa.
she didnt have to tell me she can do afro hair as i would have been fine if she couldnt as i do it and she does euro and its still a good team (something il have to talk to her about)

so il have to tackle it on friday. il just have to assure client she is perfectly capable of cutting it for her.

not sure about the tip part still though. but i do know when we have done work together she is the one that does get tips i dont as clients think 'oh she's the owner she doesnt need a tip ..lol' well i think they think this anyway.

Your stylists tips are her tips.
Don't split them.
There have been threads on this before, but the client tips who they want. Maybe you could have tip boxes so that you don't have to discuss it with your stylist.

I'm not a hairdresser, but if you think you can do it, then do. If you can't, you'll have to kindly but forcefully explain to your client that it is not your area and you wouldn't want to make a mistake, but your stylist is fantastic at cutting and you would be happy to blow-dry/ style it for her.

yeah i wouldnt to her weave and cut it all wrong ..
il have to just go down the route as you've said just assure her that she can cut it perfectly fine and il be doing the rest.

i think now i thought about it more i was right to keep it. and really when she gets a tip i dont even ask her about it as dont feel it any of my business.
she just noticed she gave more notes and asked me. il prob explain 2moro how the tips procedure goes to avoid anything in the future. although i know she is fully aware already. and i think she asked to basically put me on the spot and see what i would say imo.

Hi, I didnt realize you held certificates or were qualified in Afro Caribean hair extensions or Afro hair relaxing , perhaps if you could just fill out your profile and qualifications a bit more for us :hug: ... it would clear up any misunderstandings , I don't mean to sound rude and do apoligize if you are a professional and fully qualified Afro hairdresser ..... and hold certficates of qualification in your particular areas
but it can get very confusing sometimes as to what a persons professional area of expertise is ..
