Before I get into this I just want to say that I've read read through the other posts and done a search but haven't found and answer which is why I'm asking :)
I want to get a good skin care range but can't afford any of the expensive one's so shall I get a cheap one for now or keep the money, wait a while and save for one of the better ones? Or do some companies offer any kind of payment plan?
Also, if you could have any range, what would it be and why?
My friend uses Thalgo and use to work with Finders so I know a bit about them but it's always good to hear what everyone else thinks.

What do you use on your clients at the moment?
Have you got a salon/ mobile/ rent a room?
Is it just yourself? Do you have therapist(s) working for you?
Just trying to get an idea where your coming from!

Personally I think you would be better to save for a better range, once you have set you standards - keep them high!

Could you maybe buy some products at cost from your friend, 1 of each, for the time being until you have saved enough to set up your own account?
That way you can offer facials soon with a good professional range!

I am not sure if companies offer payment plans, you might be best to phone round some of you favourite skincare companies and ask a few questions!

What products do you use on your own skin?

If I could have any range would probably be Dermalogica or Pevonia!
I have trainned with both, both are very good, Pevonia is very result driven, a facial for every skin complaint/ age.
Dermalogica- everyone has heard of it, the name sells the facials, great face and body products. Love the face mapping!

At the moment I'm setting up a room at home, getting the last few bits here and there before I open up properly. Yeah I can get some products from her but that still leaves me with the big first order and if I need something that she hasn't got then I'm stuffed but that's a good idea until I can afford the 1st order...

In my last salon they stocked Hive but I wasn't a big fan as I never really see any results with them so I always felt guilty taking their money. I really don't want to use them again if I can avoid it.

I use Finders on myself atm and think its great (the mask stinks a bit but 'tis the price we pay to look good), the only problem I have with them is that they advertise their services as cheap so you can't price them as you see fit if you know what I mean?

Haha yes I was looking into Dermalogica too, it's like the ipod of skin care!

Ha ha - "The ipod of skincare!!" I love it!!
I am sooo going to use that saying! :D
So very true!

It is a tricky one really as I guess you want to retail products too but only need 1 of each product in professional size to use on your clients, being as its just you in your room.
I guess you are talking a few thousand to open up an account!

I personally have never heard of finders, so dont know anything about those products.

Hopefully some other geeks might come up with some ideas:wink2:

Keep us posted on what you decide to do!

Dermalogica offers a payment plan for new start ups.

Are you planning to do lots of Facials ? Is this going to be one of your main treatments ?

If you can't afford the range of your dreams then I would be inclined to order some of the Thalgo products from your friend. I would rather do this than order a budget range as it will be very difficult to get clients for facials unless you are charging rock bottom prices then when you do get a high end range you are going to find it very difficult to increase the prices to the level they should be.

It also depends what sort of clients you want to attract. People with lots of disposable income and are used to Elemis, Dermalogica, Decleor etc treatments aren't going to be interested in swapping their luxury facials for a basic start up range from the wholesalers.

When I took on Dermalogica I had 6 months to pay interest free.

What sort of budget do you have ?

I agree with Bombini - the amount of facials you find yourself doing is generally proportionate to the amount you've invested in the product. There are plenty of people who spend considerable sums on products & facials, but they're not going to pay it for a bargain basement product, because those used to quality products can tell the difference & will generally be aware of premium brands from their marketting. A skincare range is an investment, so it's best to save up or borrow the money.

I would rather not do facials at all if it meant I had to use cheap products using low quality ingredients. Far better to save up & start as you mean to go on rather than start trying to build up a clientelle for cheapie facials only to later try & introduce a more expensive range.

You are going to be limited to what you can use in a home salon.I don't think any of the big companies supply to home salons ie Dermalogica, elemis,Decleor so you can probably rule them out anyway.Of course you could use them by buying from the net or somewhere but then you lack support and training and its not really the professional way to go about things.

I would definately look at Eve Taylor and also Moor spa are very nice i have recently been trying moorspas moisturisers and have had people tell me i look really well just out of the blue, which is always a good sign your skincare is working as i certainly havent been feeling it in this bloomin weather.

I use Academie Paris.

There is no set start up cost. WHen i set up my salon the rep came out and went through what i would need to get going and it didn't break the bank. I also received free training. It's worth having a look at.

Thank you for all the advice and to be honest, you've all confirmed what I was thinking anyway. I spoke to the local rep from Dermalogica earlier and the start up isn't half as bad as I thought it would be so I think I'll stick with them.

Thanks again everyone! xxx
