Hi everyone,

I have worked with bio sculpture for 3 years now. When i see other techs doing it i notice everyone has slightly different techniques, so im just being nosey really!

When i do a colour gel overlay i do one coat of clear, 2 of colour then a top coat

I know some people put a clear gel/sealer gel or s gel over the top?

What is the benefit of this as i have never done this and just wondered?

Many thanks

hey helen

when you do your last coat of colour you would have to wipe over before you top coat this lessens the depth and vibrance of some colours so when you put sealer over first you lock in the true colour of your gel.

i find you get to know which colours do it and which you can get away with top coat!!!

If you finish with S-Gel (cured for 4 mins), it is a tough and shiney finish.

I prefer to finish with Sealer gel rather than top coat when I do my own nails because the top coat would come off when I am working on client's nails whereas Sealer gel or S-Gel won't be affected.

If you are finishing with top coats on clients that is fine. It is all down to personal preference. I could stand corrected from the more experienced Bio techs x

I put a coat of sealer over the top with Bio.

I find the colour looks much richer and lasts longer.

If I don't put sealer gel on, the clients needs to change the top coat at least once a week. If I do put sealer on, the client rarely needs to touch anything on her nails other than apply cuticle oil. I have clients that happily go 4 weeks without having to change top coat, and just come back to me for maintenance or new set at that point. (Yes I try and get them to come back after 3 but they just stretch it - and to be honest its no more work for me either way, the gel is just as intact)

so if i put a sealer gel or s gel over the top do i still need to do a topcoat?

Do you get a shine with these two as normal clear gel doesnt really have it.

whats the difference between s gel and sealer?

These 2 came out but i never really investigated!

You don't need top coat when finishing with SGel or Sealer Gel.

SGel gives added strength and a harder finish.

Both are shine but if you cure SGel for 4 mins it should be shinier x

Most of the time I finish with Sealer gel as I dont particularly like the finished look of s-gel. However, I always put a coat of Bio Top Coat Varnish over the top as I prefer the shine that gives.

If you are not putting any gel on over your colour layers doesnt that affect how well the colours last?

no i dont find it makes any difference, the colour lasts well

i was never taught to put anything over the top apart from the top coat! all very confusing!

what finish does the s gel give in comparison to the sealer gel?

so if you finish with s gel and dont top coat you dont pick up staining on that?

As i find thats the beauty of the top coat as it takes the staining as the gel is very absorbent. does the s gel not hold the staining?

If cured for 4 minutes it gives a harder and supposedly shinier finish, but I dont find it a smooth as the sealer gel. Plus the shine is better if a top coat polish is put on top of which ever gel you have finished with.

What staining? The top coat polish that I normally apply can be removed and re-applied to give a fresher look in between infills. The sealer gel protects the colour gel.

Yes hun what do you mean by stainning?
I still like to top coat i think thats just old habits though dont feel like i've finished the nails off if i dont LOL!!!!

Hi

Staining? Do you mean, like newspaper print stains?

Originally when i trained with bio there was no sealer or s gel, so with color's that lost a little depth you had to then finish with clear which as you know absorbs stains very easily.

Personally i prefer to finish with Sealer gel, i only use s gel on sculpts and tips. You should think about attending an update class as lots of things have changed in bio recently.

I always apply a top coat to finish to and cuticle oil.

HTH

I find the S-gel a harder finish than the sealer gel, but not a lot of difference in 'shininess'. Both however are a lot shinier than using top coat alone.

The best finish for me, is sealer gel, followed by a top coat ( iprefer the clear - albeit the blue is meant to be the high gloss)....it leaves th final finish so glossy, but Urban Geek certainly has a point about top coat on our own nails getting 'disturbed' when doing clients nails. I'm about to switch to the new dual cleanser, so this will become more of a problem for me!

I prefer sealer as I feel it has a touch more flexibility and absorbs knocks and bangs better, but i never get any 'staining' at all with either that or S-gel. The only staining I ever got was with clear gel in a french finish and a client dyed her hair without gloves.....i think she was asking for it!!

i meant staining in terms of when i do a french for example, when a client comes back after 2-3 weeks if they havent changed there top coat it has discoloured just from everyday use. like newspaper print etc

i finish with a clear gel then top coat.

so from what i understand if i finish with a sealer gel this should eliminate the problem?

Thanks for every1s help!

Hi

Yes it will definitely help with with the staining, if you use the sealer but make sure you cap the f/e, and retail your clients an aftercare pack with the top coat and remover. I do a Top coat, solar oil, Bio remover and file, with a salon aftercare leaflet, for £19.50 the majority of clients buy them at their first visit.

So many tech's miss out on retail opportunity's which is extra profit for not a lot of effort.

I do this too!

No matter what the application, I always finish with Sealer and top coat. IMO, this gives a beautiful high gloss finish and promotes long-lasting colour.

I also always finish with the Bio top coat whether I'm using sealer or S-Gel as my final layer as it protects the gel. I do encourage my clients to remove the top coat and re-apply each week and sell them the aftercare products to do this.
