hi, i am new here and would need some advice about waxing. I have just qualified in my NVQ level 2 . Yesterday I waxed my boyfriend 's underarms and one of them got bruised. It wasn't too bad, but I have definately lost my condidence now.I have waxed a few underarms before and it hasn't happened to me before. He said it is a bit sore. What should I do to make sure it never happens again? As for his bruised under arm- should I do something with it?Or just leave it and it will go away? I felt really bad...
I would appriciate any advice. Many thanks

You can't do anything once the skin is bruised. Did you trim the hairs? Did you apply a small amount of pre wax oil as a barrier? Did you get him to hold the part of his armpit near his chest tight? Did you stretch on his arm just above the armpit? These things all prevent bruising. This is a good lesson to learn on someone who will forgive you.

I guess I didn't stretch enough. I do not use oil for waxing - as I said I am quite new to this and at the college we weren't told to use oil. what kind of oil should I use? thanks for a quick reply.

Andrea, not all wax applications require pre wax oil. Depends on what you use. I don't use oil prior to waxing.

Bruising can happen with coarse hair - which is usually the texture of men's underarm hair. And yes, it may be due to lack of tension prior to pulling but it could be caused by other things too such as pulling too tightly or with too much force or you've taken the entire lot off with one big patch (to name but a few reasons).

When a bruise occurs, it's a good idea to apply an ice pack to it and while he's sitting up. This causes the vessels to contract and stop the bleeding under the skin - which of course is essentially what a bruise is - and allow faster healing. Yes, your boyfriend will be sore but it shouldn't be anything he can't handle if he's a fit and healthy specimen.

When I was in college I waxed my boyfriend from head to toe. Not all together in one day - that would be cruel - but fair play to him, he put up with all the mistakes I made and even grinned a few times. (Or was that a grimace? Ah well, they both look the same - mouth open, teeth shown - I took it as a grin anyway).

Just keep moving through your technique, practise and take as many victims... I mean find as many people you can to bless with your budding skill :D

You didn't kill anyone...you just left a little reminder on someone that you were there once. Take it in hand and keep going. You'll be alright.

Stretch from both side using your finger and thumb.

Aren't boyfriends and husbands the best? LOL...I bet you had way too much fun with that. Hmmm...I wonder if my ex-husband will let me practice my boyzilian. He'll probably think I enjoying his grimacing! :lick:

I use Peron Rigot jasmine oil but any light oil will do. When I trained they recommended to use talc as a barrier but I find a small amount of oil is much better. If you use a small touch of oil it protects the wax from sticking to the skin which is especially helpful on more sensitive or dry areas like knees, bikini or underarms.

Don't be dismayed it's mistakes like these that make us better, we can't learn from our mistakes unless we make them.

I agree that it might depend on the wax, however i would always use a bit of pre wax oil to create a barrier between skin and wax and to aid easy hair removal. Works a treat on all areas and whether you are using strip or non strip wax!
You can definitely feel a difference and so can your clients!

I'm voting stretch and oil - although *notes from the field* - you can do your best and still the human body will surprise you! There's one man's armpit I do that bruises like a bugger! It's only one side and I do nothing different! Still it's a moderate bruise. He's fine about it though! :D

Arnica gel is good for bruising. But i think it needs to be applied almost immediately after the trauma that causes the bruising.

Just want to clarify - by all means use pre wax oil as some techniques do espouse this but the product I use (Caron) does not require it and actually works better without it, hence my comment regarding same.

Nah, if he says yes, he just wants you to touch him. :D

Good point but I think Caron is one of the few! I have been in touch with them today and am going to try it out.
