Hi,

my wife suggested I get my chest wax and I'm keen to give it a go. So I'm booked in to a local salon for this Sunday....

First thing is walking into what seems to be a very female environment, that is going to feel a bit odd. Might do a u-turn at the door ;o)

I've never been waxed before but I have been reading some of the threads on here with interest. I'm not awfully hairy (don't have a hairy back for instance) but the hairs on my chest are quite long, so should I insist on having them trimmed? Is that usual practice? I don't want to tell someone how to do their job (they might just make the rest of it extra painful).

How long will it take? I'm getting my chest done but I am assuming that will also be my stomach area or do you think that is unlikely to be included?

I suspect it is mostly younger guys who get this done. i'm 39 and I think I am young looking for my age, but the few grey hairs on my chest are what swung it

6 days to go and counting....

If the hair is long, it should be trimmed first, either with clippers or scissors. You could just ask the therapist what they think and say you've read on the net that it's more painful if the hair is long. If they say, don't worry, it doesn't matter how long the hair is  you could always just say, please can you trim it a little for me just to put my mind at rest. (Make out you need pandering to LOL)

If I were waxing a guys chest, I would do abs too, but I always ask the client what they want, so there's no doubt.

Waxing is nothing to worry about. Lots of guys get waxed and live to tell the tale

Let us know how you get on!

thanks for the advice! just thinking it is going to be like taking off 100 elastoplasts. I also saw that taking some pain killers in advance can help, not sure if that is taking it a bit far.

it was my wife that made the booking and infomed the salon it was my first time so they might be expecting to trim the hairs anyway, then again probably not.

I would prefer to get my stomach done as well otherwise i think it will look a bit odd.

btw I don't think this was the right place to post this so any admin could move it to the consumer forum?

Hi hun!
Plenty of men go to a salon for waxing! It's nice to have male clients as well as females.
The therapist will trim the hairs short enough for them to work with, usually just before the hair starts to curl up. The longer they can be, the less it will hurt.
It should take around 20-30 mins if your not that hairy.
Cant answer your question on the tummy part as that will depend on the therapist. Me personally would include that area.
Men of all ages get this done. Don't worry!!!
I always tell my clients (and this is not meaning to scare you) that are having a wax for the first time to take a few asprin before hand. Some will feel it more than others, just depends on the person. I don't think it's as painful as it's made out to be.
xxx

Yes do let us know how you get on...and keep the pain killers a secret

I am in Glasgow Chris and have a large male clientele. Every one of them has told me afterwards that it was nowhere near as bad as they thought.

Don't worry you would be amazed at the amount of gents who get waxed so there will be no "big Jessie" namecalling

Good luck

men in Glasgow getting waxed?? changed times for that city indeed! And for the better!

your comment on the fact that men "don't think it was as bad as it was going to be" is good to hear.

Bring it on!

3 more days Chris...3 more days lol

I'm booked in for Sunday, so still 5 days to go....

the tension is building ;o)

Be afraid......Be VERY afraid.:) Only kidding, you'll be fine. Especialy if your hair is fine.

I wax men all day and a chest is a chest and abs are seperate, so make it clear what you want waxed. I specialise in mens waxing and not all want both done.

Let us know how it goes. xxx

check this You tube video out at about 4min 30s (the day after the guy was waxed)....

YouTube - My First Chest Waxing

this guy was waxed, looked fine straight after but the following day, that looked awful and very painful. Please tell me that after going through the pain of chest waxing I'm not going to end up with an acne chest? Is there something that can be applied to prevent it going like that?

Everyone's hair type is different so the reaction depends on each individual. It is completely normal to be tender or have redness in the area especially up to 24-48 hours especially after your first ever waxing session. Most people find that continuing to get waxed gets less painful as the hair regrowth is usually not as severe in comparison to shaving! So once you start waxing stay away from the razor and ya wont go wrong! :) If you follow the aftercare the therapist gives strictly such as applying soothing unperfumed lotions and creams and avoiding hot showers/baths/sunbeds etc and make sure you have a patch test for the type of wax they are using so that you are not allergic to the type of wax used and you should be fine!

Thanks Danielle, I will be sure to follow the aftercare rules after seeing that!:|

By the looks of that video and the fact he said he had whiteheads, usually states an infection and that can be brought on by not following aftercare instructions sufficiently so once you do that you shouldnt end up like that guy :)

Good Luck with the waxing! Let us know how it goes! :)

well that's it done. Therapist didn't offer to trim the hairs, she just got on with it. It was a bit 'nippy' at times but must admit it wasn't as bad as I thought it would be. I did take a couple of Iboprufen before i went though.

Booked in again for my next one in 5 weeks time.

Chest is a bit tender and red hopefully that'll calm down by tomorrow sometime.

Well Done! Glad it went well! Dont forget the next 24/48 hours are most important so follow your aftercare and your chest should be perfect and also after a few days gently exfoliate as itll help prevent ingrown hairs but im sure the therapist explained all that! Happy Waxing! :)

As a first timer it is quite likely you will get spots but persevere because this does usually go in time unless you are going to be unlucky and be an ingrown sufferer which may happen if your chest hairs are particularly curly.
Whiteheads can appear and spots as a histamine reaction and not just through bad hygiene on the therapist or the clients part.
Its a very bad time to be having your first waxes as of course with the heat of today you were probably sweating quite a bit which is not ideal so be aware that this may mean you maybe redder and sorer and maybe a bit spottier than you would have been if it was a month or so ago and dont let it put you off.
