why do I feel the training I had was not enought?...I mean I was happy about it but now the more I learn, the more practise I do and the more I read on this site I am thinking...mmm...never heard of that...never heard of this...is it normal?

I only been doing nails for 2 months...but im thinking of having more training (looking into it, just called today to request CND booklet for more info)...I ve seen people here doing homework during their training...I never done that...

I dont know I m confused...what do u think?I just want to give perfect nails to my clients!...:)

Hiya, you are echoing how many techs feel about initial training 'just not being enough'. I personally don't think an initial training should ever be enough. It is just a beginning and as I have said many times before, we all have to start somewhere, be it home study, 2 day or 5 day course etc......

However, the learning must not stop there. It should be ongoing. In all honesty, I have learned more about nails through Salon Geek than any individual training courses I have done.

I have just recently attended a one day refresher course and learned a whole lot of new stuff. It was fab and it made me yearn for more.

I have been studying beauty therapy this past year and used to often 'make homework for myself'. For example, my notes explained about the effects of UVA, UVB and UVC, the wheres and the hows. It did not stop there for me though, and I would be on the internet in a flash to research more.

Studying which should have taken an hour took me 3 hours because I yearned to to know more and to have a deeper understanding of what I was learning. It became a passion but not an obsession and I believe it is that passion which makes ones job as a nail tech or beauty therapist so exciting and enjoyable.

There is nothing wrong with wanting to give your client the best set of nails you can. Keep researching. Keep observing and listening. keep practising .

why do I feel the training I had was not enought...

Because it's not enough :green:
Not necessarily because your training was poor, but because those we're just the first steps on your way to more skills, knowledge, confidence and experience.

When I first came here, it took me awhile till I understood what is what here, what is for what, how this site works (+ english not my language) and people saying they're doing and using all kinds of stuff I never heard before, and I AM trained.

But that's not embarrassing. And it's not embarrassing to ask, to search. Embarrassing is NOT trying that and then moan for the same old problems over and over again. Embarrassing is when someone says - I'm just fine without any tutor, criticism or additional education. And if you set your heart on learning and improving, you'll find tons of help here. You'll see that the biggest ones here won't ever say, oh you ignorant fool, how come you don't know that and look down to you, poor mortal :green:

So go to school :green: the more education, the more knowledge, tips&tricks, more experience...

Thanks!...I am quite excited actually and looking forward to receiving my info pack for CND courses!...I am an extreme perfectionist so I find it hard to deal with a not perfect set...although I know i just started and I know I need to practice practice practice!...and I def will do!...I am just soooo eager to get there now!...lol

thanks for your comments...THIS SITE IS GREAT~!...:)

it is normal to think like that.
its also good to think like that
because if you thought you were perfect and knew all there is to know after just a beginners course, you would have a shock in store !

no training provider can teach you everything in a short course.
its not a case of a bad tutor , a bad course or a bad student, its just the way things are.

its excellent that you are keen to go on to further study and make yourself a better nail tech.
all the successful techs that i know take regular training and this combined with practice and experience is what makes them successful.

onward and upward!

:hug:thanks!!...I cant wait to get my info pack!!!

Creative refer to their courses as part of a 'Life Long Learning' culture and it is a good and a realistic way to describe it.

Foundation is foundation ... it doesn't all stop there. I wouldn't want it all too quickly because it is not achievable.

Allot of the joy comes from seeing a steady progression.
"Look how far I've come!!" is a great feeling of satisfaction.
"That's where I want to get to!!" gives you a goal to reach.
None of that can be rushed.

never rush a good thing...u r right Geeg I know i get too excited!...its just looking at all these amazing pic on this web site and everywhere else I just wish I could be able to do the same already!!

I will train hard!

Thanks as always:)

If you want it that badly ... then it is already yours! It is not a question of if ??? it will be yours one day.

You know what? I'll share some of my 25 year experience with you ...

The absolutely worst nail techs in the world are the ones that think they do great work from the beginning.
Most never get any better
Most never know any more
Most are gone out of the business within the first year

We had an example just last night ere on the site of a girl who stormed off the site, deleting all her posts in a strop because she asked what others thought of her first set of nails ... done with absolutely no training and with products she has bought from suppliers that many of you use ...even though she had done no training at all.

Not one person said anything bad to her. She chose to focus on my remarks which were these:

Why don't you do your own critique and tell us what you think of these nails!
Let's see if you can see where you need to improve.
What were the challenges you faced.
How do you think you coped with them?

Because if you can't see it yourself, then you can't fix it.
Nails are about beauty as well as something that just stays on for a week or 2!! although that is important too.

Now She thought they were great!! She wanted to hear that they were great!!! They were not. They were a typically very bad first set of nails. Tell you what ... we will never hear from this child again because she already thought they were good and didn't want to hear any different from anyone. She threw all her toys out of the pram in one go and the industry will never hear about her again. Bye bye ... see ya and all that. Now if she can do that after the remarks I made ... what would she do in a class?

So don't want it all too soon.
No artist peaks in the first few years never mind the first few months days or weeks!!

I agree with everyone here, also if you had all the experience and know how then i think it would be a little boring too, im always looking for the next step or things that i know will challenge me. Just doing the same old stuff for the rest of my life seems like a real bore! Knowing there is so much out there to learn still and so many different ways of doing it is really exciting. I think its why i love doing this job so much, things never stop improving or changing. theres always something for me to try, improve or change and it keeps me on my toes!
I hope this all makes sense!

This is exactly why it is so important to go to something like THE EVENT in October.

It does not matter what product you use ... the chance to do training with someone like Jan Arnold and Roxane Valenotti and Samuel Sweet doesn't come along every day of the week or even every few years. So take advantage of it.

If you all truly believe what you say about learning then do it with the best when you get the chance or you will regret it later.

yes I read her post but couldnt find the pic she uploaded...I understand why now!!!...such a shame thou..she should have taken in the constractive criticism and learn from it...that is how to get better and better...I believe so anyway...people see criticism as a bad things but they arent...its what makes u grow and master ur weaknesses and get u to the top...in everything in life I believe!

that is why I always seek for honest and professional criticism..because I need to know what I do wrong...so I can work on that and improve improve improve....so pls DO judge my pics in my profile!!!...:)

I read this and thought it was really good. Was waiting for a reply.

I think all of us pro's ask these questions each and everytime we do a set of nails. Whether we think they are good or bad. As said on here many times, we are our own worse critic's. But thats what makes us strive to do better and reach higher!

Lets not forget the chance to train with Gigi Rouse!! (Your way to modest Gigi, i cant wait to do some training with with you) If your able to make it beautifulnails then you should come, its gonna be Amazing!!

So right Gigi, I have been doing this for nearly 3 years and it is only recently that I think I might have cracked it, but still only using a certain system which means I still have tons of other things to master.

We all get over excited about wanting to do this and wanting to that at the beginning. ( I am not criticising anyone as I am talking about myself also) But when you really get down to it, you begin to understand that Rome really wasn't built in a day.

Don't try and learn everything at once. Learn one thing, master it and then move on. Otherwise you will end up a jack of all trades, master of none.

It is not true that you have to know all systems and all skills in order to build a successful career right at the start, although it certainly helps so you give yourself more opportunity to earn more money. But if you can master one system and one skill doing the most fantastic nails, you will be laughing your way to the bank which then also pays for your future education.

I also think that it is not good enough to just do a set of good nails, you need the knowledge behind you in order to explain why your set of nails are good.

Practice is good, but as Gigi always says, practice is not enough, perfect practice is what you need to do.

My confidence is not something I have granted myself, it is something my clients have given me. If you work hard and do good nails, your clients will bend their back for you.

It certainly would be a fab present, you can't go wrong with the company you have chosen to train with and once you have trained you will find yourself with more confidence. I used to struggle with my confidence at the start but it's like a chicken or egg scenario, what comes first the confidence to do nails on paying clients or doing paying client's nails well to give you more confidence.

As you continue to train your confidence grows too, as you start to get more faith in your abilities. Good luck with your training
