My daughter is 17 and suffers badly with painfull periods, she's tried the mini and the combined pill but she keeps forgetting to take it, even with me reminding her !!! so her periods are worse than ever, we went to brooks to get some advice and because of me having a leaky aortic valve they don't want her on the pill and have suggested the implant but I'm not sure about it because there's no assurance that her periods will be any better.

I'm wondering if anyone had had any experience with the implant ?
Hey I'm only 18 and I have had the implant in for a year and it's been fine, it affects each person differently like me I never know when I will come on they are really irregular! It's different for everyone x

So glad I read this! Was going to get a docs app to ask to have the implant next week :/ I too suffer from extremely painful periods and have done ever since I started ): they last 7-8 days & they are so painful I'm physically sick! I'm 99% sure I've got
Endometriosis but my doc won't believe me & all he has done is prescribed me special painkillers as paracetamol doesn't work on me  I've been on the pill (microginon & celest (sp) ) and those were terrible! Also been on the injection but I put on loads of weight and turned into mega bitch so stopped having it. I need something to stop my periods cos they are ruining my life! My other option is the coil but I've heard it can mess up your hair making it brittle & stop growing properly but I'm sure everyone reacts different x

My sister has had a similar experience. You need to find a new doctor... One that will take you seriously. It's no way to live and there are things that can be done to help.

I had the implanon and didn't have a period the whole time, but had to have it removed because it made me depressed. I think you have to weigh up the risks and if you and your daughter decide to go ahead with it, remember its not permanent, it can be removed. But I would get other tho gs like endometriosis / poly cystic ovaries etc ruled out first.

I would also say, be very sure you can stick with it because alot of doctors wont take it out before 9-12 months due to it costing quite alot on the nhs. And some areas have long waiting lists to have it removed.
I honestly think having this implant was the worst devision ive made, painful bleeding, massive weight gain, depression, anxiety, and even problems with my heart since having this in.

I had injection think it was every 3 months had no periods for 13 yrs whilst on it. Only came off to try for a family and was told it may take longer, fell pregnant straight away ! worked great for me :) hope u get sorted

Ask for her to be referred to a specialist/hospital. This is not normal. Nobody should have to suffer bad periods or bad pain that they cant cope with. If the doctor refuses then say that you will find another doctor with an ounce of sense who will treat your daughter like a human being rather than just another piece of paper in front of him/her. Or go to a womens clinic, they are usually held once a week in your area. Change doctors if you have to dont give up.

I started my periods late at the age of 15 1/2. I was very very bad. Even collapsed in the middle of the road when crossing, in front of a truck. I was bleeding so heavily that passers by thought I must have been hit by it and had internal bleeding! When I woke up I told them it is just my period. One of the ladies there (thankfully) was a nurse and phoned my doctor there and then and TOLD him in no uncertain terms that I need referring and immediately.

I was put on the pill first but that still didnt help much. Changed it several times to no avail. Even after having my son it was still bad.

I eventually managed to get checked out at hospital to find out what was causing high blood pressure, bad period pains and excess loss of blood which also was making me ineamic (sorry cant spell that). The outcome was that the pill was causing the high blood pressure ust I had to come of it completely. He mentioned the coil and I said that I had heard that the Merena Coil stops period for quite a lot of people. He arrange for it to be inserted then under general as I was in too much pain to undergo any more.

That is the best thing that has ever happened to me (apart from marriage and my son of course). No more periods, no more pain, no more vicious mood swings, no more fainting, no more bleeding.

It took a long time to sort out but only because I didnt know the ins and outs of things like this. Remember computers came in in the 80's, I started my periods in the 70's. No google or forums like this then! I have had two coils now, first one inserted under general, the second in the womens clinic. Its not too painful, less painful than a bad period pain, I can tell you!

When this coil is removed I probably wont need another as I have also sailed through the menopause now.

Hope you all get sorted out soon. I feel for you, I really do. At least there are forums like this to chat to each other about it and get help quicker.

Love and hugs.

Iv had the implant for about a month and I was told by the nurse who fitted it that everyone is different and it all a bit trial and error. So far so good though had 1 period lasted a week. For me I wanted something a bit permanent without the need to take a pill every day, if this doesn't suit then its sterilization for me, any way iv waffled on, sadly I think you just have to try things until you find something that's works for you.

Thank you all your replies, I think I'm going to discourage her from having the implant, she has exams in the next couple of months so I think the pill would be better at the mo, nd like verdypurdy said its a case of needing to take it if she doesn't wasn't the suffering, a trip to the docs I think.

I had the implant for about 10 months before having it out as I had ended up putting on 2 stone plus had skin problems x

I had the implant and I was so moody. I became really depressed. So I had to get it out.
First doctor told me it will get better. So I went to another doctor who I told I wanted a baby (I got told by a friend to say this as its the only way they take it out) and I got it taken out there and then. In my doctors only 3 are trained to do the implant and I can't believe there would be a list. It took 10mins max to get it out. He told me to get on the bed then cut my ARM. Pushed it out and that was it all over and done with. I'm now on the mini pill.

i am dying to get my implant out but need to wait over a month as that was the first appointment they had! ive had it in for nearly 2 years and everything was great, but just in the last few months ive had a period every other week, felt bloated/ bad cramps, had extremely bad headaches and just generally havent felt myself at all. i had heard mixed reviews about it but i always think you should give it a go. im glad i tried it but now desperate to get rid of it.

That's awful, bet you can't wait to get it out! I'm trying to find an HRT st the moment and same problems, bloated headaches it's a right pain :( x x

I've had the implant in for 2 years, the first year I had very bad skin but it seems to have settled down now.

Worse aspect for me is I had it put in after having my youngest and I can't lose any weight. I haven't gained any more weight but I have a stone to loose and it just won't shift. Tried low calorie diet, Zumba twice a week, swimming, I'm now on a low carb lol!!
I'm sure it's because of the implant I never had trouble loosing weight with my other children.

As for periods I've had 5 in 2 years that lasted about 3 days, so not bad there.

For me it's essential, I can't have the pill because I have bad side effects, I'm terrified of needles so the jab would be torture!

Like everybody else had said every person is different.
