my friend (yes really, lol!) has been inspired by me re-training as a makeup artist - and has decided that she would like to sign up for a beauty specialist techniques course (not sure if this is an actual qualification - perhaps its equivalen to nvq2? it includes facials, waxing, makeup, and eye treatments, plus cpl optional courses spray tanning i believe)
she currently works as a dental nurse and has always wanted to work in the beauty industry, but would like to gain employment in a salon or spa - do you think she would have trouble as an older lady aged 41 with no previous experience ? do salons tend to look for younger girls with nvq3's etc .. dont think she wants to go mobile, but thought id try and get some feedback for her, before she takes the leap - she doesnt have a computer at the moment, but hopes to join salongeek when its fixed so she can fire away with her questions to her hearts content, lol!!

I don't think age is an issue - some clients prefer an older more mature therapist rather then a young girl.
But do get her to check out that qualification, I've never heard of it. Other Geeks on here might know though.
If not, what's preventing her from doing NVQ level 2 to start with? It's offered at loads of colleges. She could do it part-time and carry on working.

hi - thanks for your reply, i have have got the title of the coure she plans to do wrong, its a cambridge regional college and i think its a VTCT qualification, so im assuming its recognised..

yes vtct is recognised, this may only cover so many units though so a salon may want her to do more courses to cover more units if that makes sense? xx

ah yes thats a real qualification, i'm doing the same one! I think its a good starting point but personally i will continue with more training after as many spa's that i've looked at and local salons are asking for level 3.
It is the same as an NVQ as far as i'm aware.

As has been said, your friend will most definately need her level 3 as you have to know massage etc. Age is certainly not an issue though! I did the vtct, but mine covered all beauty, ie manicure/pedicure manual tan application, facials, waxing, eye treatments, makeup, health and safety. It was some time ago though so maybe its changed?

I wish I was 41 and I am currently doing my Level 2 NVQ in Beauty at college.

However, I will be doing Level 3 also as it is a must if I ever wanted to work in a spa or put me in the competition for a salon job.
