Creating smile lines with L&P?

I am wondering what techniques you use for creating a smile. Do you find it easier to do Zone 1 first or do you create the smile line in zone two first? I am deciding which method I like to use. I normally use a tool in the salon to help me with smile lines. I don't know what it is called but it is a smile line cutter essentially. I am not sure I would be allowed to use this in a competition though so want to get good at doing it freehand. Any tips and advice would be much appreciated.
