Why is it that different companies have different views on what the cuticle is? where do they get there information from!?

I am not asking anyone to tell me what it is as am fully aware....(or at least I think I am! lol) ...but there seem to be so many conflicting and confusing views on what the cuticle is...it just makes me wonder..........why!!

I realise that there a lot of 'not so reputable' nail companies around etc but even the high end reputable companies seem to have varying opinions on what the cuticle is or isn't...it seems to vary from person to person, book to book, company to company, college to college etc etc...it does annoy me actually...its really confusing for people who are just entering into this weird n wonderful nail world of ours! :irked:

Well as you said, you already know what the cuticle is; but perhaps some people are still confused by it, so quoting from Doug Schoon, "the cuticle is part of the proximal nail fold. It is is the skin that touches the nail plate. There is more to the cuticle than what is visible, the skin curls underneath to form the proximal nail fold. The skin underneath the fold is different than the visible top surface. The underside of the proximal nail fold constantly sheds a layer of colourless skin. It then "rides" on the nail plate and seems to grow from under the fold. This is true cuticle.

I think the moral of your thread(apart from training with a good company) is to buy a good nail book or books, I can't comment on the big companies that you infer, any training I have done has covered this fully but I have always been one for researching every possible avenue I can within my career.

hth someone :)

Our industry is ever evolving, some companies move with the times and update their trainers and some stay put. Some colleges use old out dated books and don't update their book list or their lesson plans. Sad to see, but unless they keep up with the latest editions they are not going to deliver anything new are they. So if anyone is look for a good and sound education centre they should not just ask how much, they should also ask "how do you train your trainers", "how often do you update your training manuals", "do you deliver up to date knowledge".

I urge any new and old Technician to check out new Nail Technology book releasesfor themselves.
With Authors like Doug Schoon whos book is in second edition or Marian Newman, just to name two of the top of my head, who is also in second edition. Knowledge is power, but new knowledge is even more powerful.....

To most companies education is just a programme ... it is not their culture. They do not live it and they do not check to be sure their info is correct.

The facts are the facts ... and the facts are posted above in fifitrix post. Doug Schoon is not a company, he is the worlds foremost authority on Nail Structure and Product Chemistry and is recognised as such by all.

So putting the people/businesses aside who are barely trained themselves and just obviously trying to make money (i mean we know these people arent teaching correctly!)......

what I cant understand is the big well-known companies...and the colleges....as you say Doug Schoon is the worlds foremost authority on nail structure and product chemistry....he is the 'main man' for CND.....and clearly for a lot of people on here, including myself.
So why isnt his knowledge being used more? When these places do check their info....who are they checking with that doesn't keep them correctly updated?

They don't bother to check. They don't care. Good lord, they are still recommending Elaine Almond's book at some colleges!! It is so old and out of date (though good at the time it was written) but irrelevant now.

Some make a show of caring and education but we all know they sell to anybody. With that attitude, why would they care whether or not the student gets the most updated information? Why would they bother to research latest information?? (although there is nothing new about the true definition of cuticle ... it has been known for years, just not taught by very many).

Doug Schoon is the CND head chemist but is quite independent of CND in his other business. He is not the main man for CND as you put it. But he is the main man for the entire nail industry where nail structure and product chemistry is concerned.
