I have a client who wants to have red acrylic overlaid on her nails with black glitter spots, and rhinestones. She is going to a fancy dress as a Ladybird!! I have never used the red acrylic, and wondered if I should apply a layer of clear acrylic to her nails after prepping, just in case it stains her natural nails, or will it be okay without the clear base?

I would lay a very thin layer of clear..I have used a few colours although not red, but pink left a light stain on a couple of nails.

So I would just in case :)

put very thin layer of clear befor you use any colour. that will prevent natural nails from discoloration

Thank you, I will do that. Going to practice my "Ladybird" nails now :)

Have fun,we want to see pics!

LOL, I'm very new to nails, and nail art, but will give it a go. My camera is not a very good one, even on macro, its shakes, and my nails always look much nicer than in the photo, but will see how they turn out.

I've just remembered I seen a tutorial of how to set circles in base of acrylic, I seem to remember they looked like molehills, and when filed down, similar to reverse application, perfect inset circles were left. I think it was on my Imagination Art DVD. Going to have a look, cause I think the black ladybird spots would look better inset, rather than just painted on. Ha, I'm really setting my sights high aren't I!!

Hi

Personally I would do a very thin layer of clear first, then apply the red, even a glitter red would look lovely. Then I would just add dots with a dotting tool and black paint and then the odd rhinestone as well for effect. This will look lovely. Good luck. Wish I had someone who wanted this. Sounds fun. Abi

hi kayjay

I would use a thin layer as some acrylic colours can stain the nail. some dont of course, and i find that it also depends how long the nails are left on. I have used NSI colours red recently and that a slight stain after being on 12 days.( I didnt use a clear layer as I wanted to see what would happen, I trialled them on my business partner).

Top advice given above re having a basic, thin clear base to start with, as some highly pigmented acrylics can & do stain the natural nail.

I would do these with the black dots first, with black acrylic, then fill in with red around them, then cap the lot with clear, this is how I did these nails.....

These were sculpted, using the coloured acrylics first, then overlaying the clear.

I'm guessing you could also buff the nails up a bit if needed, before capping with clear acrylic, be sure to wipe over with scrubfresh after filing to remove dust, debris & oils fom your own fingers.

Good luck & let see the pics - keep your hand still when taking the pics xxx

Thank you so much, I couldn't remember where I'd seen the polka dot technique, and it wasn't on the Art DVD as I had thought. I had forgotten that you apply the acrylic dots first. Just had a look at your polka dot nails, they're lovely! I'd better get practicing, keep putting it off, and only got tonight free before she is coming on Friday morning. She is new client, and she says she loves bling, and glitter. I love her already, and I haven't even met her yet!!! lol

Lol! Guard her with your life - these type of clients are worth their weight in gold!
That's true actually, as they will like to try lots of different techniques and don't mind paying extra for something different.
Good luck with it, she'll be very happy I'm sure xxx:hug:

Hi Bev, thank you for the instructions, however I have only just seen them, and had attempted to do a nail tip with my ladybird design on it with rhinestones without seeing them.

What do you think? It I really enjoyed doing it, but have noticed that I didn't apply the red acrylic evenly, and can see the apex has got a slight dip in it. I will make sure I don't make that mistake on Friday when I apply them to my client. Her friend, a client of mine wants bumble bee nails, they are both going fancy dress together next week. Can't wait to do them.

I Like it!

Don't try & build your nail structure with your coloured acrylics, just use them to do the design, thinly. You then have to cap it all in clear so build your nail structure with the clear capping acrylic, I hope that makes sense.

Sounds tro me like you will be getting a few peeps in for acrylic nail art - don't forget to chare accordingly - these will take you a bit longer than normal & you must charge for each rhinestone!!!

I would build the nail with clear, file into shape, apply a thin layer of read and cover it with ultrathin layer of clear to seal. File, buff and draw the black spot on with acrylic paint. Cover the design with finish gel (or uv topcoat). If you would like the black glitter spots then just put a bit of glitter onto topgel or uv-top coat before curing. You can also lay the diamantes then before cure.

If you use colour gels then you could also try to build up the nail with clear acylic, file and buff into shape. Cover with red gel (Kaleidoscope collection from Young Nails is great as i noticed you use Youngs). Then while the red is still wet but the black spots on with black gel. Then cure and finish with finishgel or Gloss. You can also add the glitter to the black gel with finish or gloss ( Diamond Dust from Heavenly collection eg.) I personally love this look as there is no filing after the colour gel and the result is spot on!

For me a built in design with red acrylic would be a nightmare in rebalance. So much filing :wink2:

Thank you both for your advice, and I will take on board, so as not to end up with a too thick build up of product. Going to have another go on a tip today!
