hey wondering if anyone could help and how to go forward with this as im pretty upset about it! A client of mine came for a eyebrow wax, ive done her previously before, probably around 5 times, she doesnt come regularly, its more like for special occasions, holidays etc and i've had no issue with her treatments before and she has been coming to the salon for years seeing another one of the beauty therapist and again no issues. I waxed her eyebrows and from what i could see at the time was no reaction, no over redness or swelling apart from a little blood spot on one side which i was not worried about what so ever, it looked like it was just from the hair follicle, i didnt go over the area twice and just plucked where needed. I treated the area with aloe vera gel and told client to use more at home if she needed like i do everyone i see and off she went a happy client! Anyway the next day she has a browny/red mark along her eyesocket/boney bit and looks sort of like a bruise or a burn! I've not spoken to her myself but the other therapist has. The client has said she didnt feel like the wax was too hot or anything was out of sorts but was obviously upset about the marks that have appeared. Im really worried and cut up about it as i have not got a clue how this happened! She has now gone on holiday and has been advised to keep treating area with cold compress and aloe gel if needed.
The thing is my wax pot is always set at the same temp, i've been at the salon 18months and not burn a single person, obvs everyone is different but i wont of done anything different from what i've done before on her eyebrows so not sure where to go from here! I last saw her 4 months ago, and she had no problems then...i wondered if i should ask her if she has started using retinol or anything like that? Im wondering i just havent stretched the skin enough which is such a careless mistake if so, but thought if it was a burn then surely eye whole eyebrow area, including the middle would be red also? Anyway like i say never had any issues like this and i feel so guily and rather unconfident at the moment, its defo been a low point in my 11 years of doing beauty!

If you look in the search bar you aren't the only one.

Unfortunately these things can happen sometimes. She may have a new medication or her skin could have been overly dry. It is possible you did something different but it's unlikely. Do you use any pre-wax products, like an oil? I find a smidge of oil prevents the wax from pulling or grazing the skin.

On the plus side your client didn't complain and you seem to be looking after her well. I'm sure she will remember that x

Definitely can be just one of those things. It can happen if the client has been rushing and so is hot. It can happen if they got showered just before their appointment and it can happen if they're on high levels of topical vitamin a. And then it can just happen.

Using oil or talc may help and using non strip wax can help, but none are fool proof and it can STILL happen.

Don't beat yourself up xxx

Thank you for your replies, sorry, yes i should have said i use a little bit of talc over the hair first of all! She wasnt complaining really more making us aware, but the next day she sent pics and thought they had got worse and thats when her messages, which ive only just seen get a little more distressed. I suspect just scabbing up and becoming more noticable. Im not sure wether she will take it any futhur but seen as the other therapist spoke to her first shes said not to say anything else as she is going away and to make sure my insurance was upto date, which sent a shiver down my spine! Yes suppose your right it can happen, i had a graze from threading recently and didnt think anything of it but i suppose brown/red marks around your eye area is worse, im worried she has now gone on holiday, hoping the sun wont make matters worse! X

Im so grateful for this forum. I have had this happen to me yesterday, i got a message today and a photo. Graze right across her top of eye. Overly dry skin and i used talc powder instead of oil. Im sooo so gutted. It was red and i apply aloe gel, but at the time i didnt think it was a graze. But ive advised her how to take care of it and how we can prevent it from happening in the future. Ive also offered her a refund and 5 free future shapes. i FEEL SO BAD.

Sudocrem will help

I understand you feel dreadful but by offering 5 free future shapes, you've effectively admitted you were negligent and caused the damage. Fair enough I guess, if you think you did something wrong, but as others have said, these things can happen regardless of how careful you are.

If you are sure of your equipment and technique, then you should calmly explain to clients that these things sometimes just happen for no reason and offer a refund (and 1 free shape?) and mention the phrase 'as a gesture of goodwill'.

This has never happened to me, but in all honesty it HAS when I've had mine done... my skin is quite sensitive and aloe doesn't really agree with me.

This has happened this weekend with one of my therapists we have had photos and everything sent the client was not happy at all and was a therapist herself! was not a burn as i asked the client to go through the procedure the therapist had done i also made sure to ask if the wax Felt too hot which she said no to! I think its just one of those things if you make sure you give good aftetcare its just annoying when it happens as you know they will probably go and tell a load of people where it was done and to everyone else it looks like a burn Any advice gladley taken! X

I've been waxing for many years and when this has happened I've apologised and offered them make up in a pot to cover it. This has always been greatly appreciated x

This has happened to me to with a client. I waxed her regularly then it happened.. I doubted myself so started using talc instead of pre waxing gel.. Everything wax fine did her a
Couple more times then it happend again.. I carnt explain it myself as I know I did everything correctly I was over causcious! I guess it's just one of those things. Never happend on anyone else x

It could be that she has changed her skin care routine and is using something that might thin the skin in this area. It happened to me recently too. The first time ever that I grazed a brow

This has happened to me a few times lately, it knocks your confidence! I've been waxing for over 8 years and it's just happened to a few clients. I've been doing everything properly, even went out and bought all new things, wax pot,Pre wax, a wax for sensitive skin! And it still happened.. Would anyone recommend just using a hard wax on brows instead??
It's so frustrating! Xx

I only use hard wax on brows. In fact, I only use strip wax on legs. For all other waxing I use Perron Rigot Blue

Is give warm wax okay to use on brows ? And if so what temp is recommended. I have tried to search this but to no avail x

If it was the temperature of the wax to blame, then BOTH eyes would be affected.
It's more likely to be that the skin wasn't stretched enough. It happens with older clients who have looser skin. (And also very skinny clients !!!)

This happened to me recently and I discovered the client was using a topical pure vit A cream on her eyes causing the skin to become more sensitive

Found this thread really helpful I'm really stressed it's happened to me a few times this week..I've been waxing for years and I'm very careful with everything.don't know what I'm doing wrong

I have also found this thread helpful. I have just moved and relocated. I am having to start my business from scratch and am putting everything into it. Today I had a client for an eyebrow tint and shape. She had a baby four weeks ago and is still breast feeding. I waxed her brows with no issues. She messaged me not long after leaving to ask if there was anything she could put under her brows as they were sore. I put this down to the fact that she had never had them done before. I advised some sudocreme would help. She then sent me a picture with a graze area under her left brow circled in black!.

I felt sick and could have cried. I am really upset about it and have been worrying all day. I messaged her back and said that it was a graze from the waxing and this can happen. I again advised sudocreme and said it would likely heal within a day or two. I was polite and did apologise. I haven't heard anything from her since.

Its left me feeling really despondent and almost scared of waxing again.

I have taken great comfort in reading that it happens to other much more experienced therapists. I have wondered though if it could possibly be to do with her hormones after pregnancy?

I will use talc in future after reading some of the other tips on here.

I completely understand how anxious you are.i was only feeling like this yesterday.Iv been confidently waxing for about 9 years now and it actually happened a few times this week.I actually did cry! To be honest, the fact that your even on this site shows how professional you are and how much you care about your clients.
I spoke to the lycon specialist in my area and she advised that sometimes these things happen and it's not even our fault as therapists.it could depend on a number of things, clients seem to be more sensitive in the winter too.and the fact that she's just had a baby is saying her body is going through a lot of hormonal changes.don't beat yourself up.it will be fine

Another thing the lycon specialist said to me was to only use hot wax on the eyebrow area.use a film of oil before you wax and that creates a barrier for the skin.I did it all day today at work.its a little more time consuming but she said it's nearly impossible to ever graze someone with it.
