Hi, I've got a hair salon with a beauty section....

the hair has picked up but beauty has been slow so im looking to do a big big overhaul. Im looking to take on a facial range primarilly for using on clients but eventually to branch out into retail also...I want something good quality whilst not being too expensive (if there is a starting order it would need to be relatively small) and also looking to the future, for the retail to be affordable to the client. The products i sell in the hair section are usually priced between £8 and £12, so possibly something around this area for retail...I dont know if im asking a lot or not. I just dont know how well we'd get away with retailing much more expensive than that for the area i work within.

any help would be great, thank you muchos x

Hmmm the problem is with skin care ranges they tend to be much more expensive than hair products,I mean I use Redkin on my hair at 1/4 of the price I would pay for say a Darphin skincare product.

You would have to be using something reletively unknown to the public to be able to have something cheap.A good moisturiser would set you back at around £35 and an anti ageing serum/ampules could be over a hundred pounds.HTH

ps you could go with Eve Taylor which is relatively cheap but not that well known.

See thats why im on here, cos I really dont know as much as i should do to go and get a range plucked out of the sky. do you think its really important to use a range that your clients have heard of? I don't think my clients would spend £35 on a moisturiser. I would love to use good quality products but just worry about retail, and worry about establishing a range if i know my clients won't pay for the retail. thanks x

I use Eve Taylor at my salon. They are lovely products and there is no minimum start up either.
You can not buy the products anywhere cheaper than in the salon so clients are more likely to buy from you. They scour Ebay daily to make sure no-one is selling it on there and if anyone is, they get it removed.
I've actually just been emailed their price list so if you want me to email it to you then pm me your email and i'll send it over :)

thanks angelina. i have heard a lot of good things about their products...its just daunting when its not my "thing" and i dont really know what im doing, im a salesmans dream....lol

I use Eve taylor too and think its a great range, worth a look:)

Are you sure about your clients Kim?

Have you asked them what they currently use, and what makeup they use? They might surprise you.

If the majority use Clarins/lancome/MAC/benefit/ Bobbi Brown/ Gurlein, then they are ripe for a decent salon range.

If they are rimmel/max facto/ no7/ simple, then forget it and concentrate on haircare. x

A good bit of advice if you are not a skin geek, is to approach this as a consumer.

What would YOU buy and use?

Personally I like posh packaging and extravagant claims! Was always a guerlain/decleor type of punter. I dont use stuff I have never heard of.

Think it through x

At the moment we dont have hardly any facial clients (like one or two) and im trying to work out whether its because of the therapist or the quality of the products used. tanning is busy, waxing is busy, nails are busy, just looking to build up the facial and mani/pedi clients.

you know im in a quandry right now about all thinhgs beauty...seriously considering renting the room out but need to just work past this...might speak to a few of my hair clients over the next few days. spoke to a lovely young girl today who does aromatherapy massage, reflexology etc on top of what we are offering...so not sure what to do about all this now. x

It's a difficult one. There are pro's and cons to both solutions.

I am thinking of an idea for you and will PM you soon.

I have just had the wierdest PM and am a bit flummoxed now.

I'm not that sort of skin geek (yet) but I do know how to sell and from a customer point of view, I know what I will and wont pay for.

Northampton is the capital of cheep, everything here is cut price alley.
But you show Joe public that something really works and they will pay for it, even here.
We've had a beauty salon in town since, well forever, they use dermatalic, yes I know I've spelt it wrong but you all know what I'm talking about, that stuff is not cheep, but it does deliver and the salon is busy.
So what I would do is see who is willing to give you the most free samples, of the products that give good, quick results, then you can give these out to customers for them to do a bit of market research for you:lol: when they see for themselves how good the products are I don't think you'll have a problem getting them to book for the long term salon treatments or getting them to buy the retail.
As to who is good, well have a look at some of our lovely geeks web sites to see who stocks what and then either get on the phone to the companies or, do the rounds at Scotish Beauty. Or maybe the Manchester one?

Redken shampoo is about 11 quid a bottle. Dermalogica moisturisers start at around 25 quid. I sell more dermalogica than redken in my salon.

I agree that over the next week or so you should market research your clients.

Pushing a particular treatment ie facials to the fore is not difficult, and I can help you with that if you decide to carry on employing and not renting.

I like this reply :green:

I'm currently in the same situation with my salon. I'm a skin/nail geek and have just moved into a new hair & beauty salon. I had no idea where to start with the hair products. I don't know what makes a good shampoo or colour range, and don't particualrly care about the technical details when picking these for myself. I like a name that's well known and pretty shiny packaging and a great smelling product.

That's how I created my shortlist of hair product suppliers and began contacting companies from there. There was one company that really stood out from the start - They have a great education program and excellent customer service. They offer plenty of marketing help and support for salon owners as well as, in my non-hair-professional opinion, a fantastic product.

Good luck with the search!

hi
eve taylor are coming to scottish beauty this year and are running workshops on the monday & tuesday straight after i think from somwhere in the bathgate area. i will see if i can find the old email and if you want more info send me a pm. good luck deciding anyway. xx

I agree with Persianista, one of the biggest mistakes we can make is to assume what others would spend as this is normally based on our own spending priorities & notions of worth. Being a Decleor salon none of my skincare is cheap, yet I sell loads of it. Years ago before I opened my own salon I used to work in another salon in the same town & they used a cheap unknown brand & we sold hardly a bean, and ended up throwing most of it out because it went out of date. The owner wouldn't listen to me & take on a well-known more expensive brand as she said we didn't do enough facials & weren't selling enough products, yet the reason for that was the cheap products in the first place!!
