Free treatments for cancer suffers?

Hi guys

I've been thinking about this for quite some time and wondered what you all think. I decided not to go with giving discounts to students and the navy. I had a pm from a lady (you know who you are! Sorry I haven't replied yet :o) and it kinda made me sit up and think about that one.

So, cancer is close to me (in more ways than one) and I've decided I would like to promote free waxing and nail treatments - not just enhancements - to ladies who are currently recieving treatment for cancer.

It is a very kindhearted and generous idea :hug:
but what about your costs and overheads,
products are expensive and soon need replacing,
if i was to think of doing something like this i would contact my nearest cancer care centre and explain that i was willing to do the treatments for free if they could find a way of footing the costs for the products,

It's just that I know how hard it is when you lose your hair, how cr*p it makes you feel when you go through various treatments (wasn't me - my mum) and generally how it affects self esteem.

Louby, I didn't think of that, although the cost of their treatments wouldn't run to much really I didn't think of contacting anyone to help with the cost. I would only ask for the actual product it would cost though, not the actual price I would charge for the treatment. I wonder if there are any grants out there?

Can I ask one question : How will you know they are cancer sufferers ? Will you need some type of proof (although i understand how difficult that may be)

I am just thinking about the people in this nasty world who would feign something like that to get something free...

It's a great idea. I do one morning a month giving treatments to parents of special needs children. The lift it gives them is enormous and is very rewarding. Just to elaborate - the charity I do it through organises a well-being day at one of their coffee mornings. They tell their members when I will be in, organise appointments etc.

What about contacting a Cancer Care charity like Marie Curie. Again, they may be able to help with costs and also promote it amongst patients.

Have a look at this website, Caroline's Campaign - it's a charity that organises makeovers for cancer sufferers. Karen Betts from Nouveau Contour has done stuff for them in the past, and they've been on the telly and everything. Maybe you could see about collaborating with them? Would certainly be good for business if they featured you on their website...

I think it's a wonderful idea :hug: but it as the potential to become a paperwork minefield though. Any cancer and cancer treatment (as you know) is a contra-indication and will have different requirements because of the sheer variety of side effects. I have several ladies who are either in treatment or recovery and I won't treat them for anything without the ok from either their consultant or their specialist cancer nurse. One lady has the ok for all treatments, another can't have anything around her head and neck, another can't be waxed above the knee and so on.

The easiest way to possibly offer this free service would be in partnership with an exisiting cancer charity. We have a local extension of St Lukes Hospice in our town and they offer a variety of holistic treatments such as reflexology, reiki, massage and such. I approached them last year to offer nail, make up and beauty treatments foc and whilst they thought is was a great idea, when the people that organise the group requested permission from the charity heads and their oncologists, they decided that the different patient variables would be too difficult to co-ordinate. To that end they then put me in touch with a charity called 'Look Good Feel Better'.

I contacted then and now volunteer with them too. They tend to work at major hospitals and/or Macmillan centres and they offer a free skin care and make up session for ladies in treatment. It is a wonderful charity and I love going along and getting hands on with the ladies, and whilst you're not allowed to directly promote your own business you are able to offer advice regarding skincare etc (within reason bearing in mind each has differring problems and needs. Anything you're unsure about HAS to be referred to their oncologist).

Have you looked into how you would go about offering this service? I would also advice you to talk to your insurers especially if you're going to offer this in your own salon without the support of an existing charity.

I'd love to know how you get on with the ins and outs of this because if you can make it work I'm sure that there are alot of other therapist out there who would love to offer a similar thing.:hug:

i am in the process of offering a similar thing, i contacted my local macmillan nurse and she has also put me in touch with my local breast cancer care nurse. we havent met up yet but i am seeing them soon. My plan is to offer a certain percentage of my time to this and have decided on offering two free treatments a week that will soley be offered to ladies with cancer.

the macmillan nurse i spoke thought facials or nail treatments would be nice to offer but i am going to offer more or less whatever the lady wants.

my advice is to get in touch with macmillan and also your local surgery and they should be able to help you on who to contact.

I love this idea! Cancer has also played a roll in my life, I lost my Nan who was only 60 to it and so me and my mum have both been involved with Haven, a cancer charity. This is a great way of giving hope to patients, making the salon look busy, and also generating new clients for other services.
