Hi guys

Had a lady in today who used to go to a tech in blackpool where she used to live.

She said the girl used to paint the polish on then put a layer of gel on top which used to give constant shine and made it last for weeks? Is this common practice? and what would be the pros and cons?

Also she said she had minx on and the tech put a layer of gel over then top off them too and they lasted four weeks on her fingers? can this be done?

I wouldn't advise putting gel over a polish as the polish will still be drying as the gel is applied, trapping solvents & leading to possible lifting. Is it possible it was just coloured gel she was talking about?

I HAVE tried a full nail of Minx on the finger & Minx just on the tips then covered with Bioscolpture gel...it didn't work for my clients but thats not to say a sheer or French Minx wouldn't work...althou I'm sure Gigi or somebody said at the event that the Minx would stop the gel curing fully under the UV as it blocked/reflected the rays back out...but I might be mistaken with that:o HTH xxx

you cant buff the shine off the minx so dont think you could put gel ontop? sure I have read it somewhere on here lol xx

hi, I'd be interested to know which salon as I put on a qu tonight and my client had the same gel over polish applied "to make it last" but i' sure I'd heard thta the polish would still be setting and so this would have to be done a day later! (not practical)

Surely if this was true Shellac would not have been invented!

Hope someone sets the record straight and hope the salon is on here!

I dont understand why everyone wants to put top coats and things over minx all the time ? if somethings not broken why try to fix it ? I had some one the other day who had put gems all over hers , I just dont get it as far as minx goes lol
as for the polish and gel top coat , humm I think schools out on that one some people say it works for them , my worry would be buffing it off the natral nail when it is soo thin anyway ,
and the 4 week thing.... sorry but have you seen the photos of shellac after 2 weeks? would anyone really want 4 weeks worth of growth lol (maybe but I wouldnt,
hun shellac is fab it is as thin as a polish with out the damage of trying to get it off , it was made for the polish clients, nouthing else comes close !

This customer will love shellac, much better then trying to put gel on top of polish and I don't think that's what she was having, it was more likely a coloured acrylic overlay with a gel top coat.

yes, we all know how the word 'gel' is misused by different manufacturers on our industry.

Many of the discount salons use what they call 'gel' but it is not.

People sometimes call fibreglass resin 'gel resin' but it is not.

People call some top coats gel when it is not.

Some adhesives are called gel when they are not.

Just because something is UV cured does not make it a true oligamer (gel) and there is much confusion because of what manufacturers say in order to 'sell' a product to you OR the client, by calling it gel to make you think it is a 'safer' product than L&P (another load of old rubbish, myth and wives' tales.). Watch out for that.
