hey !!

I am just wondering why some people get ingrown hairs and others dont!!??

I get them really badly everywhere i have waxed and have scars and lumps and bumps everywhere and it looks awful!! why is it some get them and others dont is it all to do with hair type or skin type? does it have anything to do with hormone imbalances???

Any advice would be fab thanx all!!

Hi
one of the factors of ingrown hairs are a build up of dead skin cells and debris. You can help preven this by exfoliating the areas affected. How often you exfoliate will depend on the exfoliant used so read the manufacturers instructions.

In my experience, I believe that sometimes exfoliating can cause ingrown hairs. I would sugest that you leave the area alone (no tweezing or picking) and then if you get any ingrows, exfoliate gently and buy some ingrown hair product.

What you really should do is just release the ingrown hair rather than pull it out, but it takes a willpower of iron to resist it. xxx

The following factors can predispose to ingrown hairs :
1. Tight clothing eg. tights and ingrown hairs on legs or knicker lines
especially in groin area.
2. Lack of regular exfoliation at least twice a week.
3. Type of hairs ie. course hairs tend to cause more of a problem.
4. Fat areas or being overweight and in the areas where the fat
obstucts the growth of hair eg. between the thighs.
5. Dry skin. Moisturizing daily with a good moisturizer keeps skin soft
allows hair to grow through skins surface more easily.

I know that's what the text books say but this isn't actually the case. But that's my personal experience with clients. xxx

I was prone to ingrown hairs on my eyebrows and they were so painful and unsightly. Since i started exfoliating ,touch wood, i havent had a single one! I suppose other factors can cause them but its always worked for me and i tell my clients that too and it seems to help them also. x

But I get ingrown on my legs (and love 'em btw) when I wax but NEVER when I shave.

Get them occ when I wax bikini line but Always when I shave bikini

Just an observation really.

i find I get the lumpy ones hormonally. Bit of tea tree oil soon brings down the swelling.

Some people are just more prone to them I find.

i do exfoliate at least once a week sometimes twice i could moisturize more i must admit!!!

I often have to go to the doctors for infected ones under my arms and i havent picked or even touched them!!! not nice i know!!

Am i just unlucky!?? xx

Sometimes you do have to call it a day with waxing. You may just not be suitable for it , or rather your hair and follicles arn't and no amount of exfoliating , lotions and different waxes are going to make any difference

I have been waxing people for 26 years now and there are definately some people who are just not suitable, most people can be sorted out but some can't and they will be better using other methods.

I know of people having to have hospital treatment for ingrowns and have had people come to me with bikini lines that are like acne scarred. If your skin and hair still react as bad after trying advice given i don't foresee things becoming much better and you will be better off with other methods.

what other methods do you suggest? epilation does the same is shaving the best bet for someone like me??

i think you might be right it just dosent suit me!!! xx

I too suffer from ingrowing hairs on my legs and only occasionally underarms. I probably should exfoliate a bit more but I do moisturise and still get them. I've never had any problems with them though, to be honest I just release them from under the skin and then leave them till I get waxed again. I must admit I did think that I should give up waxing, but I hate shaving and love that since I've started waxing my hairs grow alot slower and alot thinner. If I could have the same effects with shaving then I would do that but unfortunatly that does not happen. I must admit I've never used anything for ingrowing hairs so may look into that.

I definately think it is a case of some people get them and some people don't.

I must be one of the lucky one's. I've never had ingrowing hairs from waxing or anything else. I only really exfoliate when I'm going to have a spray tan and moisturise when I remember!

I think it might be that of course each person is different and there's not much that can be done to change that. Xx

I get them on bikini area- nowhere else! Hate them! Ive used ingow & go by skin doctors, exfolliate all the time- but think im just prone to them! I def wouldnt give up waxing and go back to shaving- even tho having them are horrible!!

I can sympathise totally with this, in my heyday had a lovely bikini line until....... something happened after being waxed once - it was constant bumps and then I would spend my life with head down and tweezers at the ready (should have known was wrong especially in my job:lol:) eventually bikinis were out as it looked so looked awful but then I started working for a clinic and we used Glycolic acid products and I tell you we had a body wash and within a couple of weeks it was fantastic, add to that though lasering my bits, am now back to a lovely smooth area (only thing is now have not had a holiday this year or any sun come to think of it!)

So maybe try products with glycolic in - really helps to heal as well as the exfoliating etc

A course of a reputable Laser light could be good for you.
Eventhough at the mo its still far from completely permanent it does seem to weaken hair and follicles and makes other methods more effective.

I am waxing people who have had laser light and they do say the waxing now lasts longer and they do not get ingrowns like they used to.
Many people just cannot afford to keep up with laser light and go back to their old methods but they do say the hair is weaker. Its a combined solution.

Look for salons that have recently aquired laser equipment and are doing courses on offer.
a lot of salons rent their equipment so any offer is a good offer so its also always worth haggling for the price of a course.

Resist picking an ingrowing hair?i cant, im addicted!

Ive had to stop waxing my legs....im so peed off, as now i have to shave on the morning after shavin the night before, but when i waxed, i had fast regrowth (2 weeks) and ingrowng hairs i couldnt resist, and looked diseased, looked even worse when i slapped on my fake tan, big orange and brown scabs all over my legs, HIDEOUS!

Maybe ill try epilation? does anyone know what the risk of ingrowers with that is?

I do believe that ingrowings on legs do tend to be more due to neglect with aftercare or bad waxing.Bikinis are a different thing.
Can you honestly hold hand on heart and say that you REGULARLY exfoliate and moisturise between waxings and you should not pick, its like picking and squeezing spots you know it makes them worse, also you pull them out the wrong way usually with your nails tut tut and they ingrow again,at best you should just be lifting them to the surface to be waxed next time.
When exfoliating try medium sea salt, olive oil,one drop lavender one drop tea tree.If you use a hand mitt make sure its a clean one each scrub.

I use a very rough side on my sponge every time i wash, i moisturise after every shower hand on heart.
I pick them till i pull them out, the only ones i leave in are on bikini line, as i bleed before i get em out and then i cant see them for the blood and then i come to my senses and think, WOOOOOO lady, what a mess!

Ive given up waxing now on my legs, i hate shaving too, but by a small percentage, the ingrowers cost me more embarrasment than hair stubbs.
