Is it limiting to just offer nail treatments?

Hey, my first thread (been lurking here for over a year!),

I'm at the beginning of the CND Complete Course (and loving it!), once qualified I planned on just offering all nail treatments. Today my course group were discussing which treatments they're trained in and what else to train in, and the idea that by just offering nails you were limiting yourself?

I'm really passionate about nails and obviously you need to go with what you're passionate about but I don't see how just being the best at one thing is a bad thing? 'Jack of all trades, master of none' springs to mind for me. I'm not saying that applies to everyone, not in the slightest, but I have seen people talk about just learning different beauty treatments one after the other and I just think is it not a bit much?

I never really even thought about it, the only limit I saw was offering just natural nails and not enhancements (but then with a product like Shellac there's a lot of interest in natural nails, so I can see why someone would choose to do that - personally I'm really excited about training in enhancements.)

I live in a city and I actually can't think of 1 salon here that specialises in nails (other than NSS).

Just wondering what everyones thoughts were?

I'm just a nail girl. I love nails and lashes, tanning, waxing does not interest me at all.
I'm concentrating on being an amazing nail professional :)

I am a nails only salon. I run a healthy business just doing fingers and toes. Many of my clients like the fact that I am a specialist and therefore expert at one thing.

Personally, I don't have time to do anything else.

I don't think it's limiting at all just to do nails. Nails are a big thing in the fashion industry now and have been for years! You would be limiting yourself if you only done manicures or only done minx or gel ect. There is so many different things you can do.

The way money is just now, people want to see where there money is going so things like nails you notice a difference straight away unlike.. Facials and massage you have nothing to show for your money.

I don't think its limiting if its what you're known for. I have been looking for a good nail tech round me for about two years and now I have found one, I have to.book my next two apps in advance because she is that busy. She's really good and just does nails xx

It has never limited me!

You have to master many things within the nail category so that you have no limits.

I have never gone to a "jack of all trades". I only ever go to someone who is a expert in their field.

My opinion is that If someone has to do 10 different things to make money then I don't think they can be an expert in any of them or they'd be too busy to be able to diversify.

What a load of rubbish you wouldn't go to a jack of all trades that's putting ppl down like they are low lives and incompitant ! I started in beauty and did nails I become very well established doing nails and opened a salon. My salon is on a st with 6 salons I then started to look further into the beauty I distort and I could see hair extensions were a big hype so I trained this was a winner for me as ppl were comming through my door for hair ext and I would pass them my nail portfolio to look through before I knew it I was having clients bookin for other treatments . So where the other salons are quie I'm not I also had ppl in to cut there hair but hav to turn them away . So after speaking to client would would my salon bbe lacking at present they said hair dessing so me being me on a Monday evening I have models in to practice my hairdressing and yet again it has worked a treat you get talking on the services you offer and when I tell them the hair ext file comes out the nail portfolio comes so how pl can say they would go to spmeone as ppl stereotype them jack of all trades out and they book

I do not think you would be limiting yourself at all - in fact I think it makes a great USP. Nails are such a vast industry with lots to learn and master. It turns me off to see long treatment menus that look like a local takeaway - it suggests they are throwing everything at you without the long term skill it takes to master. If all you want to do is nails then do it.

Well done you on starting the CND course - I have not completed one myself but have heard amazing things about the courses they offer!!

I have learnt natural nail service then introduced Gelish, and I am currently learning Fusion Acrylic with Nail Harmony, which I am loving.
I don't think it's a jack of all trades if you offer more than one treatment so to speak.... I am back at college learning Body massage and have a hot stone massage course and Indian head massage booked for once I have completed my body massage course. In sept I am going back to college full time to learn hairdressing. As this has always been a real passion of mine and I love being creative.

If you have a passion for it and want to learn then why not be able to offer more than one treatment. If you have the time and are able to learn new things which may benefit you in the long run why not.

Good luck on your CND course, and welcome to the world of nails :) xxx

I am a 'jack of all trades' but would say my specialist area would be skincare and facials. I know that I don't have the time, passion or inclination to do enhancements so have a nail specialist that i have sent clients to if they want some sort of extension. She's very good, but also offers other treatments, so the problem arises when she tries to get my clients in for other things. They have been very loyal to me, and get a bit fed up of her constantly trying to push other things at them. I think she's a really good nail tech and know her business has been built on that. Would love a good nail tech in my new premises to offer enhancements etc, just know it won't be me!!! I don't think you'd be limiting - just specialising!

I love the variety I can offer to my clients. I am a very good massage therapist (I only repeat what my returning customers say ;)), I am a very good spray tanner (again I have customers coming to me for tans from wide and far!) and I am VERY good in natural nails (training in enhancements currently). I hate waxing but offer it and have returning customers.

I love nails- adore all what nail related! But I am not sure if I want to do only nails. For now tho!

I am constantly improving my skills and it's not easy when you do two, three or four things at a time and you want to be very good at least! but possible. Maybe one day I will focus on just one Specialism but I do want to have wast knowledge and understanding of beauty industry and I enjoy what I do.

And when I open my own salon I want to train my staff up to my standards :) The competition is hard these days and I want to be the shepherd not a sheep :)

And also thanks to my different specialisms my income doesn't rely only on 1 skill but I have eggs from few baskets xxx

But that's just me and my choice. You must find what works best for you!!! Xxx good luck xxx

I dont think so at all.
I dipped my toe in to things but my passion was nails, so i didnt want to be ok at everthing if i could be fab at nails and spent my time and money furthering my skills.

At the end of it its up to you, if you wanted to do mainly nails with a few extra bits like eyelashes and waxing on the side then its your choice

It's individual choice, and what they are good at and what they enjoy.

My passion is everything nails, so that all I want to offer.

If I'm not interested in something and just do it just to offer more services,it will show through my service.

Thanks for the replies :)

I am just going to stick with nails and be the best I can at them. With all the skill improvement courses to do and keeping up with the latest trends and products - fair play to those that do multiple things!

That is my opinion and from dealing with 1000's of technicians over the years, I am sticking to it. And do not tell me my opinion is a load of rubbish because it isn't and what's more it is very rude of you.

I'm not putting anyone down for being a 'jack of all trades' but not everyone is a specialist or expert and there is only one of each of us ... an specialist in one thing has no time to do other things. I didn't say a jack of all trades couldn't be busy .... but they can only be busy if they diversify where as an specialist/expert has no time to do anything other than what they are doing and to an expert standard. They are far too in demand.

i think each of has a choice if we want to be a specialist and do something that we love or not. I personally love nails and that is what i specialise in, i do however offer waxing and spray tans but do not offer other beauty treatments even though i am qualified in them. Clients know that i love what i do and that is what brings them back.

A client asked me recently if other nail technciians/salons offer glitter/foils/nail art like i do and when i asked why, she said that friends of hers that go elsewhere have commented that she always has something different on her nails and that they have NEVER been offered anything other than colour of french. For me those salons etc dont love what they do and cant be bothered....so where would you rather get your nails done???!!

Thank you for this thread :) I've been wondering the same thing because even though I'm self employed, the salon owner is trying to get me to train to be able to offer more treatments. I don't really want to but started to think I should because my business is going slow but after reading through this I've realise I heart nails :) I love it and I'd rather spend money promoting and doing what I love than in more training for treatments I'm not passionate about

Good luck with your course :) I don't think just wanting to do nails is limiting, if it's what you want to do and you're passionate about it, it'll be very fulfilling
