and want to get an NVQ. Would i be better off going to college?

Is that the same one that's in Windsor? If so, then this is OMHO but NOOOOO:lol:

Joking aside, I did my very first course there. Waste of money. Do a search on here for the best options so you can weigh up the pro's and con's of college, NVQ. etc.

Hi
i did my nvq at Carlton. (i oly did it for the nvq) But the training is questionable as my tutor didn't do nails?? And as for the home-based nvq anyone can a write case study on imaginary clients using the right words, dates, and the required paperwork ie ski jump, wide nails etc. My advice is to go college where are properly accessed or go to on a 1-2-1 with a good products company eg creative, nsi etc
Good luck

My friend did her first nail course there. She spent loads of money and did not understand a thing. She had to go to another one to get to grips with most things.
Apparently they rush through everything, so I dont think I'd want to go there.
Take your time and look for a decent course. Goodluck

Go to a course with a really good reputation. There are quite a few! otherwise you will find what you have learnt at the not so great place you have to learn again the correct way. So to save you learning twice and to save money and time go to a good one who specializes in nails.

Take care

I would go with a good nail company if I were you I only wish I had found this site first before I spent out £700 with Herts and Essex Accademy. I only learnt the basics I nearly went to the place you are talking about but then went with herts and essex.

Think yourself lucky that you have found this site first before spending all this money out!!!!

Do some searches on this site and I am sure you will find where you want to go.

Not that I want to give a company a bad name, but I wouldnt recomend it. I did the five day course and to be honest it was far too expensive and far too basic. I have since done shorter courses with well known companies at a leaser cost but their information and training has been second to none (Creative being one). I would definately look around. You can get some good info if you look in the search section for courses.

A big NO NO where the Carlton Institute is involved, sorry but I threw away about £800 studying there and learned nothing. The tutor I had was so busy chatting to her friend than watching us and I was getting seriously wound up, still smacking myself for not saying anything to her.

I could have done a Creative L&P and Brisa Course with that money!!!!

Hun, you're much better off studying with companies that specialise in what ever treatments you're looking at doing

I've decided i will train with Creative

YOu didnt sound silly hun you asked a question and got a definate NOOOOOO

and the good thing is another new person can do a search on this and find out this information as well and they will be warned off as well.

I would definitely reccommend them. I did a course with the carlton institute five weeks ago and found them excellent. I did the nVQ Nail course and am currently putting together my portfolio as in is important to me to have good qualifications for the future.

I had 2 different tuors who were expert and knew their stuff. Everyone worked hard on the course but one girl was offered to come back for some extra training if she wanted as she struggled a bit with some bits. The atmosphere was friendly and informative and I must say that they have been really supportive afterwards too with the home study part. I knew a little about acrylic b4 the course but learnt so much more.

Hope this helps!

Well it is good to see that someone has had a good experiance with a course like this other than going with Creative, Ezflow, NSI and other nail product companies.

I did my 4 day course with Herts and Essex and could have done a City and Guilds with them which was putting a portfolio together, home study and doing 12 sets of nails in using L&P, Gel, F/G, Silk, but I just felt I was not ready to do all of this on my own at home after a 4 day course. I would then of gone back and do a practical test of doing a set of nails of my choice.

I did look into the Calton which was very much like Herts and Essex were offering.

Sounds like you have done well good on you :D

I have had to do more training with Ezflow and I still need lots more training LOL!!!

If you speak to rachel aka chocolate i am sure she would help you out.:D

Perhaps they've improved, I can only comment on the training they were offering 5 years ago.

I was taught (use the word loosly:irked: ) l&p using clear powder. No mention of using white powder. Gel application, again only using clear gel, was advised to paint on three thin coats. No strength and dead flat nails. We were shown how to do ONE fibreglass nail but there wasn't time for us to practice ourselves.

The products they used were, inmo, low end of the market.

I'm sure there are many people who have used them and been very happy, but for me, it was a waste of money.

I think they must have improved over 5 yrs. Carlton were brilliant last month, definitely the right course for me. It was for beginners and concentrated mainly on the practical so that you can practice at home and do case studies after. They send you a pack with questions to complete and info to read in conjuntion with the course manual - you can then use their helpline as often as you like. I will be going back for my assessments in Dec (or Jan).

It seems from what I have read on this site Carlton & other beauty schools offer a different approach from the product companies like Creative & EZFlow - they give a foundation from which you can decide on your direction (and products) once you know what you are doing.

Have done lots of courses in my time but these (carlton) were particularly good. I did manicure, waxing and acrylic and gel nails. The nail course was well structured, the teacher was knowlegable and a kit was included in the price. It had everything in it for basic acrylic and gel nails and included the lamp. It cost me a total of £300 for the course and kit which i dont think was bad at all. I paid another £50 for the NVQ home study pack and assessment which I have now done. I will definately be going back to them soon to do fibre, sculpting and nail art and want to get the full NVQ in nail services.
