hey geeks

this is my first thread(sent it as a blog by mistake)lol

ive had the worst day EVER!!

im a newly trained part time nail tech (2months) recently ive been producing some great sets of nails, ive been delighted with the feed back ive been given and over the last few weeks, ive had so many bookings, i cant beleive the way things have been goin! my confidence has increased so much, until tonight!!

Anyways today after my full time job i went to a collegues house to do her nails, she asked me if i could do them slightly rounder instead of being square. which was fine, then as i sat down to do her nails, i got really nervous! dunno why lol it was strange. so started rounding them at the end of the sculpts & i dunno whether is me being paranoid or what but they looked crap! im so gutted, ive not stopped thinking about it once since i got home at 7:30. lol she said she was pleased with them but i think she was just being nice to be honest!! the more i tried the worse they got i felt!

none of my clients get them round and i just file them until i see a nice shape that suits the clients fingers! aww i sound like im moaning about nothing! im just really disapointed in myself, ive done better! I dont think i know how to make them round and nice at the same time lol am i making sense?:irked:

im dreading going into work tomorro i really am!!:cry:
during my training, i was taught how to file lol but ive always stuck with the same technique, can u guys give me any tips incase she ever asks me back to do her nail? (doubt she will though)

xxx
thanks in advance

first shape as you would for a square nail and then with your file at an angle under the free edge file from side to side in short movements. this will reduce the nails in the corner area first and will give a good balanced curve to the free edge.

alternatively when you apply the tip you can cut away the corners with nail clippers and refine as above with the file until the desired shape is acheived and then proceed with your product application.

oh and btw, when you see them again they probably wont be as awful as you remember.
i think we all have days like this from time to time.

some nails are diamonds, other nails are rocks

Aww thanks angel fingers, im gonna try doing my own a bit more rounded after work 2morro & ill try what u suggested! i think i was trying to round the whole of the free edge rather than just the corners!!but thats what she asked me to do!!

ive been checking out photos of nails on here and i think i see where ive gone wrong lol maybe ill get to sleep after all tonight

:)

doing it the way i described will first round off the corners then if you keep going will round the entire tip.
just file until you acheive the shape you need.

i find that if you do one side at a time, you invariably end up with one edge different to the other and they will look a bit wonky.

Hey hun,

I remember doing my mums nails while I was still training and she wanted rounded they were pretty awful and thick too lol don't stress to much I'm sure you'll be fine as you realised your mistake :) if you are really not happy with them perhaps say to your friend that you would like to tweak her nails as you were'nt happy completely with them, Im sure she'll be more than happy to xx

Why not take a look at this chapter from my book 'nailclass'.

http://www.salongeek.com/nail-finishing-maintenance/9201-perfect-form-s-all-matter-degree.html

There is allot more to achieving the perfect look of a round nail, than creating the shape of the free edge. The whole nail needs to have curvature in the right places. When I create oval nails, they are actually built differently to when I create square nails.

I'm sure the nails are not as bad as you think they are. It is always a little uncomfortable to do something you are not used to doing ... out of your comfort zone ... but these things all help you to grow as a technician in the end. x

Oh my darling! I think all of us girls here have been feeling the way you are now. It is something that we all have to go through I'm afraid and even when you are a seasoned old bird like myself you will still have a day when things just don't seem go the way they should. This is mainly due to the fact that we, ourselves, get fussier and fussier and can see flaws that our clients and the general public cannot!

Look on it as one set of nails nearer the perfection you are hoping for. We all need the ones we are not happy with to appreciate the ones we are delighted with. Things take time and practice and as long as you are learning from anything that isn't right then you will be fine! Have a little practice with some spare tips until you are happier! :) xxx

Hi Geeg, great tutorial, very clear. tks a mill

Hi Di,

just to say, you sound like me. You are only starting out and if I could only take some of my own medicine - look at what you've achieved!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Its only 1 hick-up and think of all that you have done.

Pick yourself up and I reckon your friend was prob more satisified that you think. Stop being so hard on yourself. If she is a friend and you really aren't happy with the end result why not ask her if she wanted you to try and fix them. It might mean shortening them a little but the end result will grow?

I wear gel on my own nails and like it in a rounded more natural shape. Basically, i use short sweeps from side to side on the free-edge and sometimes that will leave the middle a little square so you just use shorter strokes in the centre.

Let me know how you get on.

Redser xxxx

Many of us have experienced this feeling "my worst nails ever!" for various different reasons.

I've been doing nails for 4 years and I can still vividly recall each job I've done that wasn't my best work and I could kick myself!!! But, the good thing about remembering the errors of my ways... I won't and don't make the same mistakes again. And neither will you. You will learn and grown and improve :green:

Relax, take a deep breath, in a week or so this will no longer be on your mind ~ and more than likely the customer is very happy with her nails :)
