Hi peeps, I need some advice re the menopause.
I'm 46 next month n convinced I've started the menopause.
After having hot flushes n mood swings for a while, I went to my docs who did a blood test. Results over the phone were... No further action required. I then got on a major downer n thought if doc cba why should I be bothered n left it. Few months later, the sweats were waking me up (if I actually got to sleep in first place!) so I saw a diff doc, another blood test.... Negative.
That was 4 weeks ago. Last Sunday my mood plummeted right the way thru till Thursday, was ok fri, bad sat n ok today. I'm stood here in the garden tryin to cool down. It feels like I've an internal radiator on full.
My moods go from murderous to suicidal, this weeks has scared me tbh :( I sit staring at the wall convincing myself I'm worthless n nobody will help cos I don't deserve it.
I don't know what to do next.
Other symptoms are I'm piling weight on, despite not eating a lot, n I want to scratch my skin off sometimes. I haven't had a period for over a year but I have the coil fitted so that can't be used as a test.
Anyone any advice?
Ta muchly :)

So did the doctor test your FSH hormone levels? This is what you need to no.
Sounds like you need to be firm with the doctor as you should not have to put up with these symptoms, there is help if it is the menopause xx

Hi
Yes it was an fsh test they did but it came back with normal levels.
I've read though that the blood test is usually only a guide n mostly used in aged 40 or under, so I'm confused

I understand your frustration!

I've also had blood test and they have come back negative.

I've had night sweats for last 3 years, recently scratching skin so bad that it leaves red brushes. Mood swings.
All symptoms are there!

I've heard it's a slow process, but surely it should show in blood test.

Same here. I'm 33 but early menopause runs in my family. Bloods showed normal levels but u have the night sweats, flushes, itches and moods (although I suffer from depression anyway)
Doc just said it's likely the start of it but can't confirm until my bloods change. So frustrating x

So really they don't do anything until blood test states otherwise?

I can relate to the sleepiness. By 2pm I've got jaw ache from yawning!
It's like something's sucked all the life n energy out of me n replaced it with heat n moodiness

I'm only 25 and have had all these symptoms the past 5months, I'm still having periods but there all over the place when they used to be like clock work.
I wake up covered in sweat and boiling.
I go hot and cold really quickly.
My moods are horrendous! I suffer from depression but one minute I feel I could kill someone for no reason and the next I'm crying! I'm snappy and grumpy, then really happy and hyper, and I'm always so tired I'll be awake for an hour and want to go back to bed, I feel like I could sleep for a month.

I haven't been to the doctors yet about it as I fear they won't take me seriously and I'm scared of the answer as I'm currently trying for a baby.

My doctor said for peri menopause they do nothing. When your periods have stopped for 6 months then they will consider hrt, although it does have side effects. Go see your gp again. In the meantime there are some herbal tablets you can take that help but I'm not sure which ones. I'll go and Google it..x

There are quite a few herbal remedies. Look at the Holland & Barrett website to get an idea.. :)

Hi I had an early menopause it started at 37 my first blood test didn't show anything I went back to the GP after 18 months and they redid the test and I was told I was in Peri Menopause. I sympathise with you i had a bad time mentally It coincided with my business failing I think i could of coped with all the stress of redundancies and insolvency if I had not been menopausal. But Im through it all now and can honestly say I'm glad I don't have periods anymore I have no mood swings or bloating and my mind is crystal clear I used to have a week out of the month when i felt normal in the old days!! Weight is an issue am afraid and your waist does thicken I addressed it with joining slimming world and try and get out on my bike when i have the time.

I was just going to say you sound peri-menopausal but i think another geek beat me to it lol chin up chuck keep going back if your not convinced xxx

I'm back for something else this week so I'll try n impress on her how bad things have got n see what she suggests.
I can't exercise due to dead discs in my back n I don't eat much anyway.
Looks like my future is as a fat, grumpy old woman, I have 2 cats so can double as a crazy old cat lady lolol

Go to your local health shop and ask them to give you something if the doctor won't. There's several remedies that can help relieve your systems like bio force menosan for instance but you would need to consult with the therapist at the health shop to be prescribed the best remedy for you.

Thanks I'll try that if I get no joy at docs :)

I would just say consider carefully before HRT. I took it for 3 months, gained half a stone, my skin was spotty and I cried all the time. Put them in the bin.
I didn't take anything but if you take soya it apparently helps, even switching to soya milk.
I'd also ask for thyroid check with next blood test.

After I had my daughter my periods were starting to fizzle out!
Before I had her I had endrometreosis so was in severe pain each month so I knew something was up.
Two years I was back and forwards from the hospital trying to figure out what was going on, I had all the symptoms, and when the hot flushes were getting really bad my mum said maybe ask to rest for menapause!
I thought yes good idea to rule it out!
I asked the doctor and she laughed at me!!
As if I were stupid!!!
My FSH hormone levels when they came back were 95!! (Should have been 20 or below)
So that was it, I was well and truly going threw the menopause.
It took two years to find out thanks to my mum but by this time I was only 27.
I was absolutely devastated.
What I'm trying to say is you no your own body, doctors don't always no best, you must not let this go till they give you answers.
Change doctors, ask to be referred to a specialist and be firm.
I have learnt over the years I tell the doctor what I want as if they can't give you a tablet and send you packing they don't want to no xx

Acupuncture cured my hot flushes and mood swings and I've never looked back. Worth a try just to get some sleep I say. Hope you find help soon tho.
