Hiya :)

Does anyone know anyone who knows anything about Mercedes Auto gearboxes? My car is very poorly , won't come out of 1st gear. I've had it looked at but been referred to a garage who said at worst it would be around £1000 to strip mine down or over this for a reconditioned one !!!

It might not be as bad as that because it could be that the gear oil needs changing which would only be about 20 quid + labour (BIG difference!)

Any help greatly appreciated

Are there are motor forums you can ask...?

I only say this cos i had a problem with my dishwasher last week and i was surprised to see that there are forums just like this one but for their own thing...cars...home appliances...pets...ect.

I'm no motor mechanic, but we did have a similar problem with our car a while back (albeit with a manual gearbox). It too was jammed in 1st gear, and we managed to rectify it by rolling the car back and forth whilst someone moved the gearstick back into neutral.

It may not work for you - but it's certainly worth a try if it saves you a grand.

Cheers

My OH has worked on Mercs for year's, I will ask him when he gets home.

I've just been next door to ask Mercedes (I work at VW and we have merc next door).

The man (rather dashing, oil, overalls - you know the type!) says the oil needing a change is quite common and that will often result in it getting stuck in one gear. He says its probably best to book it into a main merc dealership for diagnosis, they wont so the work unless you ask them to but will give you a quote or let you take it elsewhere to have the work done.

HTH's a bit xxx

It is worth finding a forum. I joined the Alfa forum and was amazed at the information they have.

What a great idea hun....i am of to find the ford focus forum xx

Thanks for all the replies guys!

My DH has been looking on the MB forum and there's not much to go on tbh. I've booked it into another garage which is closer to me than the one recommended as my nearest MB garage is over 20 miles round from me and my poor little car wouldn't survive the journey

I'm desperately hoping it is the oil as a) it's a lot cheaper and b) it's a lot cheaper! :)

Thank you again and I'll let you know how I get on. On my bike now (ooh, how I remember the pain from 4 weeks ago when it was out because of a dead battery!) Some girls get all the luck hey?!

xx

how sweet and helpful are the gals on here eh !

babe im only down the road so if you want me to follow you somewhere incase you're worried of breaking down .... just holla

my friend works for mercedes (snows portsmouth) so if she/we can help again ... just holla !

shes living with me for another week or so - but out tonight - but i know if she can help at all she will

hope you manage to sort soon ... and we're all hoping it'll be inexpensive for you too xx

Just to update you on my gearbox saga because I know you're all just hanging on the edge of your seats waiting to see how much it cost me, lol!

It went in yesterday morning and I didn't here anything until this afternoon, they say no news is good news? Anyway, turns out I have an electric gearbox and there were some solenoids that were dirty from dirty oil and loads of codes that needed sorting out too.

Cut a very long story short that went waaayyyy over my head anyway, lol, they changed the oil, filter and gear oil, got rid of some codes and she runs like a dream :) AND the best bit is it only cost me 60 quid! MUCH better than the grand I'd been quoted and he said if it did happen again it would need stripping down so the box plus labour for that would come in at around 400 quid (which is again miles better than a grand!)

Thought I'd share that things aren't always as bad as they first seem. Must be all that positiveness from the 'Secret' thread, lol! If your in my area R & R Motors is who I went to. xx

Thats brilliant hun, pleased for you!
