Hi,
I don;t get to do alot of nail art..... So sick of forever french... all i do all day.. I am trying new things but i am not sure what paint to use.... I find nail polish to runny.. I use gel colours at the moment and they give a nice 3d effect but i want to try some funky stuff...
Any tips of brushes and paints etc...

Also what do you charge for nail art?
I do alot of toe nail art and am running out of arty ideas.. anyone got a good web site i can look at for a little creativity.
thanks so much
x Mel

Hey mel, I find the best paint to use is acrylic paint , sort of like kids paints,

if you go to an art shop you will find a large selection of paint colours and brushes and glitter paints, you will def need a striper brush - maybe a couple of different size ones and a few different fine detail brushes and a dotting tool. I find going to these places cheaper than buying striper paints from beauty retailers.

I like the acrylic paint as it lasts a long time with a good top coat and base coat like CND's Sticky base coat and CND's Air Dry top coat!!

With prices its hard to say as it really depend on how time consuming the design is so you will have to work that out but for a simple design on all 10 nails wich might take 10-15 mins Id say around 5-10 pounds hth x

I use Reeves acrylic paints they come in little tubes and last for yonks they are great for mixing up different colours and I find they dry very quickly too which is bonus.
:)

Brilliant site - can't believe i haven't come across it before! Many thanks for the info chantelle. Off to spend some money now!!!

Thanks so much for all your ideas.. My mother inlaw bought me all these nail brushes off ebay and i used one in normal nail polish and it stuffed it... so i have just thrown them into a drawer... dug them out today and when the kids are asleep tomorrow i am going to have a go at some art... love to try the " eye of a tiger" that was in the tutorial section... wow i love looking at those.. thanks again
Mel.

where do you get these paints? Are they water based?I am looking for water based nail art acrylics does any one know can you get them from craft shops?some said you can any suggestions?

I use water based acrylic paint - Crayola ones for kids are good. Or Poster Paint.

I also use dotting tools and Skinny Stripers, and Glitter dust brushes.

I am only trainee though.

Hobby Craft is where I get mine

If you have ruined your brush with using nail polish hun, steep it in acetone and that will sort it.

I use artists acrylic paint I buy from my local art shop.
They are in squeezy bottles and cost about £1 each. I also find they can be a little thick, so I squeeze them out into my pallet and add a small amount of water with my brush. You need to have a jar/glass of water , kitchen roll/tissues to wipe your brushes after leaning to be sure you've got all the colour off.
Acrylic paints dry very very quickly. I use nail polish as a base colour mostly and do art on top of that, or direct onto the p&w's.

One last thing - DON'T FORGET TO SEAL YOU HARD WORK WITH A TOP COAT OTHERWISE IT WILL WASH OFF!!!!!!

is it best to put on a coating before using the paints then?...and obviously afterwards....:)

Oooooh the bestest ever are Anitas Acrylic Paints, they have metallics too, and loads and loads of colour from 99p for a big bottle which will last you forever xx brushes? I use Star Nails Super Striper for flicks and I always thin them out first by a couple of strands and a double ended dotter for flowers and I always keep cocktail sticks handy xx:)

I like using acrylics from out of the tubes, they last ages, but I also read somewhere that you should ask for a letter from the manufacturers, stating that the product is safe to use on nails, just to protect yourself I suppose, you never can tell what could happen ?? hassle though. the airbrush paints for nails are very watery for freehand nail art too.

Believe it or not I got a fab set from Tesco's.. there's three strips of six little pots and was only £4.00.

I got them for my daughter who is decorating a little set of ikea drawers but I've pinched them back now so I can have a play with them.. They are acrylic and have a fab range of colour.

Like UKRed I am only a trainee and haven't even started acrylics yet but no harm in having a play :)

I bought a few of the striper paints with the brushes in them, I cant get on with them at all, some of the colours are soooo thick and cloggy, and dry way to quickly I'm left with just blobs instead of flowers...not good when your practicing lol

I bought some acrylic paints but am finding them really thick and 'gloopy' which is ruining my nail art. i have tried adding a tiny bit of water but then they become almost transparant when put on top of the nail polished base. Can any one advise?

I charge $1.00 cnd per painted art item ie: one butterfly or one dragonfly

I also use acrylic art paint - its great!

What a gret thread im only just getting to nail art and wondered what paint to use, i have a load of un opened acrylic paint at home and some brushes coming off the internet!! i cant wait to play with them when they come now!!

Hi guys,
well i had the same q...which nail paints to use..initially i used to use nail polish itself..it worked for mking simple petals wt toothpick strokes..but brushes do not work well with nail polish and they gotclogged. i read here tht acrylic paints are used. i wondered however tht is'nt it harmful or something..especially while eating!...also..we would have to seal it with a nail polish top coat as acrylic paints are not water proof...wud tht also help prevent the chemicals of the acrylic paint frm entering our food while eating?:|
