Hi everyone :)

I am a newly trained Nail tech (just trained at the Creative Nail Academy) and about to start out on my own:confused:

I was just wondering if you wonderful experienced nail techs could offer me some advice.

Up to now I have only done sets on my friends, but need to start advertising, what i'm worried about is fact that it is still taking me about 4 hours to do a full set ( L & P) and concerned that firstly if it takes me 4 hours to do a clients nails they won't come back, and secondly..who has 4 hours to sit and have their nails done:lol:

So how should i go about it, should a advertise "free" sets of nails just to get practice in, would you go along and get a free set of nails if it was going to take 4 hours?? or would you charge just enough to cover costs? I suppose at end of day they would be getting a "decent" ish set of nails, and would be creative??

Any advice would be greatly received

Thanks you sooooooooo much

I think you will need to be a little quicker than this to be able to charge full price. Why not charge half price for a while, but make sure everyone understands that this will increase when you speed up. This is a difficult stage but will pass and your speed will increase naturally as your experience grows. :)

Thank you Sheila for the quick reply and for the advice :)

I'd quite happily charge half price to start with whilst i get experience/speed up, but i wonder if that is still asking too much. Its so difficult isn't it as you want to get a good reputation but at first you are not going to be the best, but need the experience to get better...yikes !!!

The reality...it's supposed to take 10 mins to do one nail....but that is completed start to finish.

So maybe you should practice this to try and get your nails up to speed..set times, one nail 20 mins and then try and get the time down.
Sometimes we faff too much rather than just getting on with it, but we have all been there, so good luck

xx

Ok if I were you, I would practice on tips, nail trainer or freinds untill you can do a full set under 2 hours. Then book yourself in for some 121 and they will be able to tell you what your doing wrong or right and how to produce a good set babe
Xx

I would advertise a reduced price for 'Nail Models' i.e £15 to £20. I did this when first starting out and got a good response from teenage girls especially, as a lot of them love to have their nails done but simply cannot afford full price, they will be grateful and pleased with whatever the finished result (normal folks don't have the all critical eye that us techs have - they won't notice bits and bobs here that aren't 100% right etc).

Its different practising on a nail trainer than actually getting out there and doing a real life customer, part of the learning process is the different natural nail shapes, lengths, problems that they may have with their nails etc. :wink2:practice makes perfect!! x
