Hi geeks,

Since doing nails Ive really noticed that not many people at all want their nails doing i.e Nail enhancements. And I'm disappointed by this as i thought loads of people would want their nails done. And below are the 2 main reasons i hear why.

1. They want acrylic and that's it - They think gel nails don't last long at all and acrylic lasts longer.

2. They think having nails done is painful and that it destroys their natural nails and this puts them off for good no mater how hard i explain to them that having nail enhancements by a good nail technician and good products will not ruin your nails or be painful.

Does anyone else have this problem or is it just me?

Because Ive been qualified around 6-7 weeks now and only done 1 full set of enhancements

hi hun, i dont have this problem at all, majority of my clients are nail enhancements, and i regularly get new clients wanting them, so much so, i have a waiting list, not because i am jam packed 40 hours a week, but because i only work 10-3 mon-sat with 2 evening appointments a week (due to family life) hectic:). and then obviously with the regular clients its hard to find the time for new clients. it takes time, you havent been doing nails for long, marketing is the key. i can assure you it will be a limited number of people who have the opinions you quoted above. if anything stops people from having the nails done, its money in the current climate. so good regular clients with big mouths to spread the word are needed. good luck:hug:

Hi there

I dont have this problem either, we are mad busy with nails this month, just be patient and I am sure that it will turn around for you. We offer both, so this may be one way to overcome preferences between gel and acrylic and I always explain to anyone that raises that point thats it the aftercare and removal that make all the difference in how the nail looks after enhancements have been removed.

I think some people are just not very educated about correct care and removal and they hear from their friends scare stories.

I am sure that with consistent marketing, you will find things get better.

best of luck to you

Thanks guys! But the marketing isnt the problem, every client that steps through my door for tanning i always mention about nails and 99% of the time they use the above two comments they more say about them ruining your nails.
And i was in my hairdressers room renting the other day and i was talking to two ladies and they both said the same thing.

I just feel like everyone i talk to they say the same old thing

LOL it must be an Essex thing as when i only offered Gel no one wanted it!! Now I offer L&P im doing ok!

Hello

When I started I was only doing Gel nails, manicures and pedicures. Now in this part of London South East it is Acrylic heaven. Everyone wanted acrylic. And not only that but I had to compete with those salons charging half what I was, some with questionable standards.

It is true if you just starting it can be slow. However as mentioned by someone earlier marketing is key.I think mentioning that you do nails is great....you could make an offer with your other services like half price nails with a spray tan.

In my experience I found a niche. It took a while but I did. There seemed to be few or no one who did great mani and pedis, especially for new mums. Now when I do a mani or pedi I offer gel on toes!! Even for half price (not all the time)just to get in coz the competition is fierce in London. So don't feel disheartened you are not alone but there is a light at end of tunnel .

Its definately great that you are telling everyone that comes to you about the services you offer, but you also need to spread the word about your nails too. flyers , posters etc etc will get you noticed.

The ladies you have coming in are interested in tanning (which is great) but you also need to spread the word about your other services too.

I am sure i am teaching grannie to suck eggs here, but lots of ladies who have nails done, just have nails done. and lots of ladies who have tanning done, just have tanning done.

It will take time and lots of patience but i am sure that you will succeed in the end and build a great and loyal customer base.

Thanks so much you all speak allot of sense!

And i understand how some just have nails and some just have tanning but others will have anything. That's very true.

As ive now added more treatments to my list im getting new flyer's made with all my treatments and prices.

I will keep on persisting but i think it would also be good to at some point offer acrylic.

1. They want acrylic and that's it - They think gel nails don't last long at all and acrylic lasts longer.

You're using Brisa gel... tell them about the benefits of it, that it's hypo-allergenic, that using it is no different to having L+P due to the formulation etc. Sell it to them and give them FACTS so that they can't argue with you and if that doesn't work then offer then a free nail to trial and see how they get on with it.

Why not offer to do their little finger nail for free, so they can see for themselves that it doesn't hurt and doesn't ruin the natural nail?
Say to them, tell you what, I'll do the little finger of your none writing hand and you can see how it looks and feels for yourself, no charge and if you like it then you know who to come to for a full set? And if you don't like it I'll remove it safely without damage when you come in for your next spray tan.

That's a good idea - I never thought of that one - I think I might offer this for facials as I've not had a single facial booking since I started 6 weeks ago and my products are just screaming to be used hehehe

6-7 weeks! Give yourself a chance.
You are using a great product and I totally agree with offering a free pinkie to try and convert some (know it all) clients.

I have had clients for a file and polish slating L&P and I have persuaded them to let me do an overlay on their pinkie. Then on their next appointment I remove it, tidy up and buff up and there it is staring them right in the face....a perfectly healthy nail with no jagged torn nail plate (which they were expecting). It doesn't always work but I have a few more L&P clients because of that.

It certainly isn't an Essex thing. When I was in Essex I did Brisa, Biosculpture & L&P all very successfully. Whereabouts in Essex are you? How many clients have you refused because you don't do L&P?

You have only been doing it 6-7 weeks. It cetainly takes so much longer than that to build a clientelle. How are you promoting yourself? When I first started out (a little home salon) I left my flyers and cards everywhere - restaurants, local shops, doctors surgeries, dentists - everywhere. I also advertised in the local paper a couple of times. Do you have a website?

Most clients come from word of mouth, especially if you are not ground floor on the high streets. Be patient, keep plugging at it and you'll get there.

To really address the problem, it is best to be a full service technician offering both L&P and gel. Doing a demo nail is a great idea.

Good luck!

Sounds to me like you either need to expand your hours or raise your prices....just a thought.
