Hi everyone, i'm new to the world of salongeek but have been informed by NSI that this is the site for great advise so I hope you can help.:) I have been a nail tech for the last 4 years but have currently moved to a new area and set up a home salon in March. I've always taken pride in my work and never let a client leave until I am completely satisfied with the result. My times vary from 1 hr 15 to two hours. Recently though I have had a client leave and start going to one of the quick nail bars in town that use drills. She seems to be please with the results but my nails that she had infilled by them have not shifted in 3 weeks and I think they might be using MMA. The problem is she is still coming to me for her Hollywood Toes, should I mention the dangers of MMA?

hi and welcome :). You can mention it but there is a reason why she left in the first place, did you ask her? if she mentions that their nails last a lot longer then explain to her about MMA 'the dangers etc', or if she says they are a lot quicker tell her that the reason you take longer is because you take pride in the natural nail and you like to make sure that all your clients receive a good and professional service. If its the price then Explain that the products you buy are professional and don't contain any harmful substances which damage the natural nail etc.. and due to this they are a lot more money to buy. If i have missed anything or didn't make sense i am sure that the other geeks will help as there is a lot more experienced techs on here, good luck :)

Well you could mention it but it could come across as being 'peevish' about her going to another salon and you may risk looing her as a toes client.

The client makes the choice at the end of the day and if you havn't been 'volunteard' the reason by your client it may simlpy be down to a matter of timing or price ..nothing personal iykwim.

Be carefull as well, SOME of these what were once termd NSS are actually getting very good at what they do, whithout the use of MMA and the use of an efile by them does not necessarly equal damage.( I'm well aware there are some that don't care)
Generally owned and run by orientals...these ppl stay ahead of the game work hard and are allways willing to learn and move forward more than us Brits...and they know how to make money .

Don't take it personally, find out what they are doing that's so different to you and if it is better in any way ADAPT your service so future clients have less reason to leave you.

Just to add if you are right in your susspicions, you'll sonn know if she comes back with a busted nail bed and expects you to do something about it :green:

Well this is the approach I'm using and it seams to be working

Thanks for the great advise. She is a very busy lady and she is very impressed that it only took the oriental salon 30 mins to do her infills and I have to be honest and say it takes me 1hr 30 mins to do her infills. There is just no way I can increase my time unless I was to start using a drill. I think perhaps it is definately worth looking into using a drill as this seems to be popular. Thank you

I don't think that "using drills" has any relevance as to whether her nails stayed on for 3weeks or not.

"I think they might be using MMA"??.. You don't know that for sure.

What I would do is have info sheets available for clients to read so that they are aware of the risks of MMA products and let it be their choice next time if they still want to get their nails done there with the knowledge of what these products can do to their nails.
I know you want whats best for your customers but I'm worried that if you tell her directly it could come across as if you were trying to stop her getting her nails done at other place.

You should be pleased because like you say she had hers infilled by the other salon so the nail further down is yours and they stayed on so that must mean your nails were good.

Why is it a problem that she comes to you for her Hollywood toes? You didn't say. If a client comes back to you for a service that means that they like your work right? and if they like they'll keep coming back, so relax.

If TIME is her issue then do her nails in 30-40 minutes using PopIts and NO drills!!

We CAN compete (and safely) with these speedy guys if a client really is concerned about timing you know, and PopIts is the tool to help you.

I honestly believe that anyone who doesn't learn how to use PopIts so that they can compete is frankly nuts.

I believe tha most of our clients should return to the salon with nails that haven't budged after 3 weeks so maybe there are other problems you need to sort out.

I think you should be congratulated that your client obviously feels so comfortable with you that she is quite happy to give both salons her business.

Hi

I have only recently trained and was wondering what PopIts are?

Thanks

I wouldnt say anything unprofessional and it is highly unprofessional to comment on your compitition. I would ask how she is getting on with her nails and say agree that it is amazing that they can work to that speed without any damage or pain. put the seed in her mind and say no more. if she says oh yeah it is painful say 'oh I just couldnt experince pain in my fingers ouch!' if she says nothing then she is happy and fine and unfortunetly unless you can match the speed she wont be back. Be glad that she's not getting her toes done there also.
Many of my clients get their tan done elsewhere (I cant stock them all) I dont take offense I'm here if they need me.
