I am considering training with Nouveau Contour in Semi Permanent Make up and really need some advice.

I have looked into many different companies, including going to USA to train, but Nouveau Contour seems highly recommended, so I think this is who I'd Choose to train with if I do decide for definate to do it.

What I'd like peoples opinions on is:

1 - Is there really a demand for this type of work? ( I know a lot of this probably goes on the area you live in, But just in general?)

2 - What is the best way to work once qualified? - Go round to salons and rent a room so many times a week / month?

3 - Is it easy to make money from this work?

The reason I ask is I have a little boy and would like to work a few days a week doing this, so I can spend time with him and my partner at weekends.

I am currently working in a salon 2 and a half days a week but Semi Permanent make up is something Ive wanted to do for so long. I dont want to spend all that money on doing the training and then not gain any money back to make it worth while.

Id really value your professional opinions please

I asked this sometime ago - and I have put this on the back burner until I am in a position to self fund and not worry about the return -

as I know it will be slow - just like any new skill - but more so with spmu.

- I personally wouldn't let someone 'new at spmu' on my face - thats just my personal view on it.

If you do a search there is quite a few questions in relation to spmu.
Hope this helps

Thanks for your reply hun.

I know, I am the same and wouldn't let anyone new to SPMU tattoo me, but I would look at offering cheaper treatments to guinea pigs and build up a portfolio until I felt confident enough to work on full paying clients.

Its just something I've been wanting to do for ages but can't justify spending so much money on something that I may not gain a good return from, especially at the moment, when money is very tight for most people!!

You have to look at a number of things, the real cost can be around $30-35000 or around £18000-20000 once you get going, there is more hidden cost in this than people think, so I have been told. the training is very basic and so is all the things you need. Extra training can be around £1500 per day!

So much extra is needed.

You have to look into other things as well,

1) is there anyone who does this in you area, are they well known and have a good rep?

We looked at this and now just get someone in, even if you have a home based salon you could run a referral system.

(I am the same, there is no way I would let someone touch me, unless they had a massive portfolio and high reputation, I know you have to start somewhere but not on me! I see the student stuff in our salon for correction)

I don't know of anyone in my Exact area that does it and only know of one reputable lady that does it, but she is not in my location.

I have just started work in a new salon after having some time off after having a baby and I know they are having someone come round every month to carry out SPMU treatments, but she is travelling from London, so not from my area.

I think I will put it off for the time being and look into it again next year, as I do intend on doing it at some point and building up a portfolio, maybe right now isn't the best time!

Thanks for your advice though.

I trained with Finishing Touches and they are brilliant and very highly regarded, especially in the medical profession. Their machine, the Precision Plus is the best.

Permanent Make up training is a large initial outlay.....about £8,000 but if you promote yourself, you can make a serious amount of money. Yes, extra training is a lot of money but most people don't go on to do that so I wouldn't worry. By this I mean that you either have a natural talent for this once you're trained or you don't.

You need to practise and do all your mates for free and charge models £50. That's the only way you'll get better.

Don't dismiss is and don't worry about other people in your area already doing it. There's enough room for us all.

It's a really rewarding career xxx

QUOTE! the Precision Plus is the best. That is a bold statement, this machine has been out some time, its a little cranky.Quote! Yes, extra training is a lot of money but most people don't go on to do that so I wouldn't worry.I would not worry? well its the keystone to being good at what you do, and one again is bad advise from you. saying I would not worry, thats is a moral of your standards, but not what I would advise. have a good think about that one.Quote go and do all your friends, with you L plates on.Not a good idea at all, yes get practise, but extra training is badly needed. how else will you get to learn the best techniques, if you going your own way all the time?I am not a Queen of many things, but seem to be the only one who has seen the light on some of the comments here,(from you) and the past.I remember many moons ago someone loving the whole ball of wax dvd" then when they became a trainer, not liking it as much.? ........Su x

Hiya,
I do PMU and have got to know many in the industry, and have worked with some of the most respected in this industry.

Don't take advise from people who get advise from friends, thhey will be biased remarks, on hear say.

Do you research like everyone does
who will give you what you need.
Is there is backup support after training
what will I get for my money
How much is extra advanced training
what techniques will i learn
what will happen if i don't take to the class, and need more support
who will guide me trough, when i go it alone
is there advise and support for marketing and finace
will i be covered by insurance, and IS IT GUARANTEED????

these are some of the questions, there are lots more

Nouveau Contour machine, I used it but preferred my prescision plus (no, its not cranky) Its brill. Ive used one for over three years and never had a problem with it. The precision plus is EU registered to a high medical grade, and its functions and cartridge fitment DO NOT ALLOW CONTAMINANTS TO ENTER THE HANDPIECE, unlike other machines.
The pigments are very exspensive and usually have a shelf life of 2 years, the first 2 years will be hard going for business.
The work you do on models will be so light to start, that the work will be very light and almost fade to nothing, technique and pressure will come with a couple of years experience.

Thank you Jenny and Kim for your helpful and encouraging advise!

Finishing Touches is another company I have been looking into which seems just as reputable as Nouveau Contour and I agree that there is enough room for us all to go into such a rewarding career.

Some very helpful information regarding going to the states, thats something I've already considered and now I have some names and locations to look into.

Thanks again Ladies ! :)

Hiya, I trained with Debra Robson Lawrence, she is linked to my website.

She has always supported me when I call the office, she gave me her private mobile number if I feel I come accross problems (not sure if she does that for everyone)????
she will come to your clinic to train you, she has a great tech called geraldine (not sure if geraldine traines with debra or has her own training days) best to give them a call. ask advise from all areas..and go with what makes you feel comfortable.

I got on with debra a dream, but that dont mean you will get on with her. Everyone has their own way of learning and teaching.
The one thing I will say is that I have always felt confident (that says alot)

finishing touches are good and so are nouveau
(they have their own marketing packages which are very helpful) debra does not, you have to have your own designs made.

What i do know is the girls in the states are fantastic! you will need to be sure you can get insurance before you book abroad???

Its a great industry and rewarding, but it can take 2-3yrs to get some money back.

Hey Charlie - just adding my 2penneth here. I know Karen Betts personally and professionally and have done for years. She is my only experience with SPMU as she did my eyebrows (thank goodness) and did an outstanding job.

Karen has really worked hard and built herself an excellent reputation within this field. She is actually opening up a clinic (she already has a salon) but the clinic will be for the more discerning treatments and where Karen has come into her own is through the SPMU to help people who have gone through horrendous operations and she has been able- through SPMU - to give them back some outer beauty! She is incerdibly professional and really knows what she is doing!

There are other excellent people out there but this is just my personal experience! What both Kim and Jenny have said is excellent and it covers all your bases! Hope it Helps!

Thank you for your advice Mrs Geek, its good to know everyones opinions on something like this as its such a big decision!!

I'm still looking into the pro's and con's of all the different companies and hopefully i'll make a decision soon!!
:)

Hi,

I trained with finishing touches in March 2007. They are national based and my trainer was Gail Proudman who is fantastic.

I like you wanted more flexy time and this is a fantastics way to go.

It can take some time to build full confidence and a client base but is worth the cost in the end and profits are really good.

I rented a room at first but now work out of different salons, this way the salons can push your services and book most of your appointments with you paying them a %

I was on the fence at first then just went for it.

You will make your money back and there is also the medical side once you are experienced at SPMU.

Hope this helps and feel free to ask away.

Jo

Oh yes! Gail is a fantastic trainer and a smashing lady.

Thinking about it, we've got some great SPMU artists in the Uk haven't we.

Have any of you heard of The Academy of Micropigmentation based in London? I think the lady that trains there is called Marylee?

Also, Smudge free? This is another one I have been looking into.....
