It could be that this place is in a chinnese dominated area and need a nail tech that is able to communicate properly with them, they may have other tech's that cannot speak this language, I know that for myself I would prefer to go to a salon or shop that is Dominated by English but that is because I don't want to keep repeating myself to make myself understood, unless that salon or shop has someone there who can communicate with me in my language.

If they wanted some who speaks Chinese for that reason then they should ask for someone who speaks Chinese. I wouldn't say that asking for a Chinese 'person' is appropriate and sounds a little like they are descriminating.... IMO

I don't really see a big problem but do think they specify this in the wrong way by labeling it like => preferebly a chinese person . They could have putted, looking for a nailtech that speaks fluently chinese or something else.

I don't think it's bad at all, you have to remember that clients looking for techs don't think the same way we do. We understand the touchy subject about how people say 'orientals only run NSS bars' etc and people get edgy on this site about it because they don't want to seem racist etc.
But the truth is, this is the way some people think, and before I became a tech, i did too, not to discrimanate or as a racist, but because that's what I ever saw in my area as a nail salon and I never knew there were other professional places so you really can't blame people for saying it, you can only correct and guide them.
I have had many clients come to me saying "oh yes, those chinese nail places blah blah" etc etc. The person who put that post in may be chinese themselves or looking for someone else who can't speak chinese or other related languages so needs someone who speaks the language too.
I have also had women come to me who have told me they specifically requested an asian pakistani and were sent my way becuase they can't speak english, not because they were racist or discriminating, I didn't find that offensive at all.
You don't know who the person posting is, and if they were trying to be discriminating or vindictive etc, I think they would have said alot more than ask a simple question xx

Well, I'm afaraid I know who posted the ad - definitely not Chinese, as Vaida is Lithuanian woman's name.

I agree... I have worked in HR recruitment for 14 years and I think to ask for a chinese person is discriminatory unless you have a very good reason (which I don't think this is really). If they needed a female for say a woman's only session sauna then that may be justifiable. If they need someone who speaks chinese due to a language a barrier then maybe that's all they should ask for. If they are just asking for a chinese person then that has nothing to do with the language and would make me ask why.....

If we live in Spain we speak Spanish or at least learn too and live by the laws of the land.
If we live in Montreal we, speak French or at least try to and learn the language and abide by the laws of that land.
If we live in France we speak French or at least learn to and abide by the laws of that land.
If we live in China, we speak Chinese or at least learn too and live by the laws of that land.

And if you live in England you can speak what ever language you want and use reverse physicology under the banner of rascist.

In my opinion it is absolutely wrong for anyone to advertise in this way. Who are the clients, do they not speak English when they live in England or visit England. Can you see yourself advertising in this way - would English law allow you too - Only white English speaking Nail Technicians need apply. I don't think so!

As far as I am aware you are not allowed to advertise for a position in any company stating that you "prefer" one race or even sex over any other. It is illegal and she should be reported to whoever is the proper authority. CAB would be able to tell you.

xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx

I totally agree. I think it goes against the whole principle of equal opportunities. You just cannot choose to employ someone because of their gender, religion, age, sexual orientation or race. It's about their suitability to do the job. It's not so much about whether someone is being offensive or if it is racially motivated or not, it's more about positively discriminating against someone or a group of people because of who they are... I'm sure whoever placed the ad may not have wanted to cause offence, and to me they haven't, however, I think people should think about how others will see it and whether it is fair.

I'd like to see someone who isn't Chinese apply for the job and be turned down, not because they can't do the job but because they're not Chinese.

Good grief.... I have had quite a rant there haven't I? Sorry folks...

It is quiet illegal to advertise a job and stipulate, religion, nationality, colour or the likes.... unless it is absolutly vital to the job that is being advertised.....
By saying chinese person preferred, she is actually saying that she would be inclined to choose a chinese person over say a polish or english person..... if the chinese language is important to the job, then she would have to state that being able to speak chinese is vital......

There is a report button on the bottom of her advertisment, so you can report this posting for review by Gumtree admin. So go and click LOL, I am gonna xxxx

P.s. @Alpenrose I have removed the personal reference, in your previous post, for legal reasons, no offence ment and I hope none taken xxx

Reported it too babes

Unless the advertisor has a GOQ (genuine occupational qualification), then this advertisement is illegal.

I have to say that Mannipatch has taken the words right out of my mouth and its a shame that many others feel unable to express this opinion for fear of being branded a racist.

If you want to live in a country, you learn to speak the language and adapt to the culture of that country. I feel very strongly about this subject and have no intention of offending anyone, but I really feel that the cultures and traditions of our country are being watered down under the guise of diversity. I am not a racist, I would welcome anyone to live and work in our country, but it offends me greatly when people refuse to adapt to the British way of life when they do so.

Oh, yes! 100% of women I ever met with a name Vaida were Lithuanin.

No, I didn't apply for this job, as I Dagenham is too far for me to travel to. :) I opened this thread because these kind of jobs ads are quite common and I think not fair to others.

It's also a common name in Romania, possibly an Eastern European name as opposed to specifically Lithuanian?

It isn't (IMO) right to generalise!

We need to be extremely careful what we write on public forums as it isn't the author who gets into trouble for libel, it's the website owner, in this case The Geek (Samuel).
