Hi Nail Geeks;
I'm a skin geek, so my apologies for hi-jacking your forum, but I was hoping some of you might be able to offer me a little advice...

I'm a mobile beauty therapist at the moment, but was thinking about taking a course in gel nails so I can add it to my treatment list. I started the acrylic & fibreglass course when I was at college a few years ago but never finished because the teaching was so awful. I found it very difficult to master, but wonder if this was because the teaching was virtually non-existent, or whether it was because I was just genuinely rubbish at acrylic & fibreglass nails!!

I'm leaning more towards a gel nail course than the others partly because I have (limited) bad experience of the others and partly because as I'm mobile I want to minimise the fumes I bring into my client's homes when I do a treatment! I know there's a real art to master when it comes to any type of nail enhancements, but I wanted to know if gel is generally easier to learn than the others?! And do you think it's worth doing to add to my business? Also, one/two day courses...good enough if I practise loads at home after? Or should I be looking to invest more time than this to learn?

All views and opinions welcomed please! Thankyou Geeks!

hiya Bombalurina
I trained in gel nails and found it easier to control and when I passed I had the confidence to move onto acrylics, I found that acrylics was really difficult because it requires more skill that the gel. However, I have astered bother systems but I am glad that I chose the gel nails first and practiced well with the acrylic nails. I would advise that you do the gels first and then move onto the acrylics.

Hi
Acrylic application is difficult to master for everyone i think. I have just qualified and many of my classmates dropped acrylics and just did nailart & manicure. Its a shame becuse the sense of achievement you get when you pass your final assessment is wonderful!!! The advice from Be Beautiful is very sensible but to be honest if you are dedicated & prepared to really practice,have a good tutor and study a good qual(E.g.VTCT NVQ in Advanced nail treatments) you'll be fine. Any other system after Acrylic is easy and youre laughing!!!

think about training with le chat, there is probably a trainer quite near to you.
its a simple system to master and is ideal for those who cant get the practice doing nails all day everyday.

i posted a recent thread with a picture of a set of nails that a complete novice did on her first day, if you search for student success you will find it and it will give you an idea of what is acheiveable.

I trained with CND, and I recommend them highly.

It's likely that you had a bad experience because of bad tuition rather than you not being any good with nails, so I wouldnt rule out the liquid & powder systems as long as you go on a good course.

Give Sweet Squared a ring, they have very helpful people on the end of the phone who can talk through everything with you and help you choose the right course. They are on 0845 210 6060. Sorry if I sound like I'm plugging but I really cant say a bad word, their products are excellent, as is the training, after training support & advice, & customer service.

Big thankyou Geeks, very helpful advice...I think I will look more into doing a gel nail course initially, and then perhaps give acrylic another go further down the line!! (Though I'm not sure why the thread has been moved... I asked for advice about an industry topic??!)

Thankyou everyone! At least I'm not so worried now that it was me being totally useless at the time!!!!
