And other alternative treatments ..So how do we all feel about these treatments, absolute rubbish or has anyone been helped.
Are those that practice certain alternative therapies fooling themselves and others.

I never used to be sure about holistic therapies, but earlier this year i went thru a bad depressive stage and reiki and crystals really helped. ive also had hypno therapy and now im back to normal, totally ok.

accupuncture is brilliant aswell.

reflex i have regularly as of late, and i thoroughly enjoy it, and it really relaxes me, but thats about it. she does pick up relevant stuff, so there must be something in it.

Aromatherapy im not a fan of. I just dont enjoy the treatments. and never feel any benefit from it, from the oils or the massage. its too light for my liking!

well as I am a holistic therapist by trade, and do all of the above, I believe in them wholeheartedly. I also do hopi ear candles LOL.

I don't just decide to do a treatment for the hell of it, I have usually experienced a treatment first and felt so passionately about it that it has spurred me on to train in it and offer it to my clients.

I would say that reflexology is the one treatment that really blew my mind when I first had it. Auric cleansing with crystal eggs or spheres was amazing to do.

The auricular acupuncture left me feeling euphoric.

I think the aromatherapy oils are fab but tend to use them in swedish massage rather than the traditional aromatherpay massage routine.

I don't offer these therapies myself and i don't know much about reiki or crystals, however my mum has always used aromatherapy oils and refloxology at home since i was very little, she attended some courses for home use and read alot of books, whenever we were ill out would come the oils and we'd be in for a massage or have oil burners in our rooms.
Whenever i have really bad period pain my mum mixes me a massage oil for my tummy and back, works better than co-codamol! Headaches and migraines, lavender and peppermint on a cold compress gone in 5 mins, so i really do rate the use of oils.
I do rate refloxology as well, i know where most of the key points are and can usually link an ache in my foot to something going on elsewhere! x

I treat my whole family in what i suppose could be termed holistically or unconventionally in some way.
To be honest we all do to a degree. Our kids hurt themselves we rub it better ..thats touch. We use vapour rub, olbas oil, eucalyptus, camphor, tiger balm, peppermint ,thats aromatherapy for colds aches and pains digestion.
Massage helps muscular aches, joint pain, circulation.Rub your temples and scalp when you have a headache.
Tea tree and eucalyptus kill germs quicker than bleach.. again aromatherapy.
Earl grey tea very uplifting flavoured with Bergamot..again aromatherapy.
Reiki to me is very special totally away with the fairies yet practised in nhs hospices all over the country.

I do both Swedish and Aromatherapy massage and I find that I do more of a Swedish massage with the oils as most of my clients prefer a deeper massage.

I aim to study reflexology next year, I am really looking forward to getting to know this therapy in-depth.

Hopi Ear Candles I wholeheartedly believe in .. I have had many successful treatments with clients - can't recommend it highly enough!

I am not sure about Reiki, and Crystal Healing but I am guessing the more I get 'into' my holistic side of treatments, then the other 'alternative' treatments will become interesting to me also. I won't knock anything until I have tried it myself.

One thing I will say... Holistic therapies are so enjoyable to give and receive, I am so chilled out after sessions with my clients.

I started off doing reiki before massage. I had a young woman a couple of weeks ago at a waxing course say that she didn't believe in that sort of stuff. The waxing teacher and I were talking about chakras, auras etc and the teacher asked if I would see what I could pick up. I got her on the table and told her what I got. Then the other girl said can you do it to me, not that I believe it. So I told her what I picked up and she got off the table saying 'I'm a believer now.'

Aromatherapy oils are mainly used for relaxation massage which is why people will say that it wasn't firm enough. It's not meant to be. It's for relaxation purposes mainly. Having said that, because the majority of the massages I do are sports and remedial, I do have an oil mix I use for these which is a muscle relaxant and anti-inflammatory.

I also use crystals and reiki a lot on people suffering from depression or other emotional distress. Whether they believe it or not, it does help as they say they feel better afterwards and they weren't even aware of what I was doing.

glad to see that this is an open minded discussion, as the subject matter is, well, alternative.

I used to attend a few health fayres, but stopped doing them as I would be set up professionally to offer Indian head or reflexology, and I would be next to someone waving their hands around frantically and pulling stagnant energy out of people, very theatrical, but looked 'quackish' to me. Also inversion tables, and bowen technique, couldn't get my head around. I haven't actually tried any of the treatments so will reserve judgement on them. But, I stopped doing the fayres because I would look at the stall holders through the publics eyes NOT a health professional in the alternative field.

I have a friend that does auricular acupuncture and reflexology. Now she approaches her treatments with a 'fix it' mentality. I also do those 2 treatments and I approach it from a 'spa/senses/relaxation/pampering' mentality.

Jen, honestly, i'm hard pushed to reccomend anything if i dont think its any good, but the crystals i use myself, ive learned a bit from some good books. I've given my BF a crystal, to promote feelings of love and let go of the past, and low and behld, he is being more loving towards me and forgetting how he was hurt by other girls is how he will be able to do it. make sense?

He keeps it in his wallet, but i cant for the life of me remember wha its called lol, eek! its pink and black speckles anyway! it will come to me. edit: i think it was rhodonite. =]

I also carry a lepidolite and a carnelian i think it is, an orange one, i was instantly drawn to the carnelian, and when i looked it up it was actually perfect for my needs.

You can get a basic set with the charkra crystals quite cheap, i got one from one of those discount book stores, its good, got a big chart inside aswell you can put n your wall. Its called "discovering crystals" by Simon and sue Lily.

just try it!! xx

Marlise,

you know when I was reading your blog i wanted to suggest TIGERS EYE. This is a protection crystal and can encourage money too. Doesn't have to be a big one to be effective (said the vicar to the tart), just a small tumblestone would do.

I love crystals. Don't know if they do anything but they are beautiful. I love all the descriptions that come with them but whether they work or not....?

I would like to try crystal therapy/chakra cleansing/aligning. Most people would say it's a waste of money but many things are these days. If it works, great, if not I'll move on. :D

i worked in the nhs for 20 years as a nurse. in one area we offered comp. therapy to our patients -paid for by the consultants trust fund - pretty radical i know in its day. we did a very small research project and did notice statistcally significant benefits to the patients (men more than women).
i have also had treatment from a herbal therapist and was so impressed and had hypnotherapy to help me with my fear of flying - so successful that i took the kids to the states this year.
yep - you could say i'm an advocate for complimentarytherapy
