Hello all. As a salon owner and a space to rent like many others out there I have decided to help myself and somebody just starting out. Firstly we know how hard it is to start a business. As a salon owner, we have already taken the plunge. So what we have is maybe a room or two or a nail bar in the front of salon that needs renting out to help pay the numerous bills that we have. The thing is, unless somebody can come in with a huge client base, its a big risk for the person wanting to rent the space from you. We have already made the move and have to live with that. To grow we have to offer more services. To do that we have to give the new nail tech, beauty therapist a break. I have just said a nail tech can use my nail bar for free until she gets customers in. There are reasons for this. It means she will come religiously until she gets a good customer base without crippling her. I get to advertise to somebody who wants their nails done but while they come for that they may decide to have their hair done and who knows beauty too! So come on, try this way. The girls, or guys aren't costing you anything at just being there, but it could end up being a good move for both of you. Helping each other is the way ahead, especially in these rough times.

Well done Dawn for bringing this up, as it is a 2 way street!

My mate has allowed me to do this in her salon and when I'm not busy then I will answer the phone, make coffee, sweep the floor etc for her.

When I do have clients in, then it helps her business by making the salon look busy (as well as offering an extra service to her clients) which it goes without saying encourages new clients as I think salons are like restaurants we would all chose to go into a restaurant that looks busy than into an empty one, because unless it is an unnoticed jewel then we assume that somewhere that is busy must be good??!!

On top of that it goes without saying she gets her nails done for free...... as do her staff (at the moment) as they promote my nails to potential clients...this make them happy too!

It is so tough out there at the moment we all need to help each other and as Dawn has said if you have a space in your salon then seriously think about getting a nail tecnician in, we really don't need much space to do our job!!!!

Hi Dawn

What can I say.... I think you have a great heart to beable to give a nail tech a change in your salon.. I just wish they were more salon owners like yourself. Its great to be able to get set up self employed with out having to think about paying rent until they are able to afford this.. I would jump at the chance to be based in a busy salon and give up mobile... xx

I think this is a great idea to help people get some valuable experience in a salon and to help them spead the word about their work.

Well done you for being so positive about it in this way. I think more people should work together like this. Now.. who in the Manchester area wants to let me do nails in their salon???

Excellent thread....

Hooray someone who actually sees the bigger picture for a change! Yep I know that the owner of the salon was never afforded this luxury by their landlord when they took on the lease of the shop. BUT what clients hate to see is constant staff changes, so if you can give a nail tech a bit of leeway to get established then I think you are onto a winner. Good luck to you and I hope your nail tech is as supportive and loyal to you as you are to them.

Gosh, I am encouraged and inspired by your post. I am trying to find somewhere local to start when i finish my training and its not easy. I do hope you will find someone special to work with as you deserve to have someone who will apprieciate and be inspired by your work ethic.

best of luck

No offence, but I have rented rooms out in a similar way before. I have offered rooms on daily rates or commission only and even three months free to build up their clients.

What I found were the laziest bunch or people I could find. Now I am not saying everyone is like this, but the people I got just expected these clients to come out of nowhere.

Yes I included them in the advertising and pricelists but they never went out and got the work themselves. They moaned and moaned and moaned to me about how quiet they were, how skint they were yet no matter how much advice I gave them they did not help themselves!

If they know they have to pay I find them a hell of a lot more eager to bring in clients!

Hi, glad to see you think it is a good idea. Helen was fab on Saturday. she did pay me because she had clients, but the arrangement will stay the same, no clients no fee. Hope a few more people take up the idea too. :)
