Should I Do It?

Hi Everyone!

I have absolutly no experience in Beauty/Holistic therapy but the idea of learning has always appealed to me.
I found a local college where for £1199 i can learn all the basics in just 9 days.
I have checked the company out and everything they do is all above board, they issue certificates protected by BABTAC & CIBTAC.

I am looking to do this course, pass and gain confidence in working with clients by practising on my family and friends .. and gradually build up my skills and complete more courses in advance treatments i.e waxing etc.
I also hope to register as "SELF EMPLOYED" and start a mobile business through this.

Has anyone ever gone on a course like this before?
Would you do it?

Theres no way you can learn it all in that amount of time, my course was a year and it was pretty intensive. Its up to you really but even after i'd done my year to get my itec diploma i still was pretty unsure on a lot of stuff.

I thought that 9 days was a little short to learn it all, its mainly:

• Manicure & Pedicure
• UV GEL Nail Extensions
• Waxing
• Eye Brow & Lash Tinting
• Eye lash/brow perming
• Basic Massage
• Basic Facial

Thats the course syllabus ....

No way could you lean all that. I know it sounds tempting but PLEASE reconsider. If your gonna do it then start on the right track

Find out what help you will get beyond the course, how accessible they are -can you ring them up when unsure about something. I trained over a period of time with a company that has advertising space on Salon Geek whereby the course is intensive but beyond that its up to you to obtain every bit of info and practice you can grab as well as all the tips - dig for info. I hope to submit my portfolio this month - its taken me 2 years for me to prepare and feel comfortable in the fact that I know what I am talking about - to a degree but theres always more to learn and this sites has got to be one of the best places. I don't know what I would have done if I didn't have the knowledge of these guys to help me along and motivate me.

I have read that they help you when your stuck after the course, if you have any problems or queries you can contact them.
I will be expanding my knowledge also when i take out other individual courses.
I just wanted to get a brief idea of what i am going to focus on doing....so i thought this course would be good!

This subject is a bit of a mine field because ultimately you cannot learnt everything you need to know in such a short period of time but you can learn the very basics and use that as a stepping stone - a lot of money for a stepping stone but I did the same. As a full time mum of two and a full time plus a part time job, this kind of course was the only option for me and now I have the study bug - wish I had it when I was at school.

Hi Where I live you can do level 2 + 3 for that price. I think that there are a few who can pick up things quickly and do really well. But in all honesty I would do the courses at your local college. Short cuts never usually favour long term success. When I studied I did my beauty specialists diploma + C&G (an amalgamation of level 2+3 before NVQ's etc) in a year full time, 5 days 9-5. I never felt the insecurities that some girls feel today after completing a short course. I too feel it when I have booked one day training - it just is not sufficient in most cases. I would say go for this course if you were returning to work but not otherwise. :hug:

I have to say that I agree with most of the comments on here so far. I studied my holistics (aroma, reflex, body mass & A&P over a year's intensive course full time). That did not feel enough at the end and went on to do advanced reflex to stack up a bit more. Just learning the routines to get you through assessment is hard enough without all the underpinning knowledge you need. Are they going to cover all the A&P (anatomy & physiology) in this course too? If not, you are going to have a huge pile of homework that it will be up to you to read and decipher.

I think that you would be better going to Further Education or Adult Education and studying these either individually or on a holistics or beauty course. You need time in between each section of learning to digest what you have been taught and practice. At the end of the day I'm sure all working techs and therapists will agree that it comes down to good underpinning knowledge and practice, practice, practice.

Good luck and hope you find the right course for you. It may take more time but you will not regret it.

I agree. I went to college for 2 years, 3 full days a week and even then, they don't prepare you the "outside" world, and working in a salon environment.

You need to learn the anatony & physiology, we had keyskills, and 2 years work of assignments.

They put these courses at colleges with a 2 year time frame for a reason, and I hate it when people think a lot of us who have trained hard hear about these courses and think there is nothing to it.

Anyone who knows the NVQ 2 & 3 courses, knows the amount of blood, sweat and tears that we all go through.

Above all, I would hate for someone to waste that amount of money, to then be turned away by an employer. Although you might have the qualification, I imagine, as a salon owner myself, I would always prefer someone to have completed the full 2 years.

OMG! NO! You cannot possibly learn and gain any sort of confidence after 9 days! and covering all those subjects!!!???? They will just be ripping you off and you'll end up doing other courses/training in the long run to go over it again.

I am finishing in June my 1 years Beauty Therapy (1 day a week) course at my local college and we all feel swamped with course work and presure from all the practical, not to mention the revision for our ongoing exams that are done throughout the year.there is ALOT of anatomy to learn too.
Its alot to take on and I think you wouldn't feel as though you've had a good proper training. If you are serious, do a proper longer course (they're cheaper too!)
