I am a non smoker and think its a great idea it works in Ireland and I don't see and empty pub in sight as for killing people just ask Roy Castles wife if its a good idea, passive smoking kills too, I know its not gonna be popular but people will like it in the end, who knows it may even help people quit.

well its just been announced that there is going to be a 100% smoking ban. was just wondering what your thouhts are to it???

A BIG THUMBS UP FROM ME.

  1. I won't have to be a passive smoker anymore if I want to go for a drink (and I am not smoking the equivalent of half a packet a day!)
  2. I won't have that unpleasant smell on my clothes and hair now after a night out.
  3. People that work in catering industry aren't being forced to work in unpleasant conditions to earn a crust.
  4. It will hopefully people that want to quit - quit

Quite often I hear people in my local comparing the drug alcohol to cigarettes when discussing the ban but I have always maintain that people drinking around me doesn't have a harmful effect on my health but smoking does so yes I am glad and out of interest Did you know that 85% of the smoke exhaled by a smoker is toxins which we breath in YUCK

well i think it sucks

LMAO!!! You better get to the cash and carry for those ashtrays and umbrellas. Will they be stopping people having a drink soon as well? Or maybe eating meat? Breaking wind in a public place?

I don`t smoke - but I think an absolute ban is total nonsense - On the news this afternoon they were claiming that a ban in pubs would save lives - what utter rubbish!!!!

.

Sorry BUT i just I don't agree that this is utter rubbish - take a look at the stats on the BMA website if you need the proof.

I am an ex smoker of about 4 months now and I think the ban is an infringement on people's civil liberties and completely ridiculous. There is nothing better than going to the pub with your friends at weekend and having a couple of drinks and a fag. And after all a ciggie doesn't affect your behaviour the way drinking does! I would rather have someone blow a bit of smoke in my face than have my lights punched out by someone who has had way too much drink.

What will the government do next BAN CARS because of their high polluting emissions?

When will governments around the world learn that there are more important things to sort (like poverty and war).

And remember all you none smokers (that includes me now) that as a result of this maybe more people will give up and our taxes and national insurance rates will soar to compensate for the lost revenue generated by the smokers of this country

Rant over!

As an ex smoker I am all for the ban, it will be great to go into a bar and not have to breath in other peoples smoke.

Even when I smoked I was quite considerate I never smoked in restaurants most of my friends are non smokers so I felt quite alienated which is one of the reasons I gave up.

We know that smoking in a public place is no different from smoking at home but at least when you are doing it in your own home you are not endangering others with passive smoking.

sorry if it sounds abrupt but I am a very typical ex smoker and can not stand the smell now.

I dont smoke but I think maybe it should be up to the pub/restaurant owners wether they want a smoking section or not. They will have to take the ciggie machines out of these places then - good cos they are a rip off! lol

Yep this is exactly what my mum said this morning So it might not be so good for the pocket.

Well, you're bound to hear lots of scare stories about people losing jobs because bars and restaurants would have to close due to lack of business. I must admit that when the ban came into effect here in Ireland, I thought that half the pubs would surely have to shut their doors permanently due to lack of custom. What has happened? Absolutely nothing so far as I can tell, all the pubs that I know of are still in business and they've still got a healthy (ok, maybe not healthy) clientele. The only difference is that now the smokers have to leave the pub to light up and truth be told, they adapted to it pretty quickly.

The downside: The smokers have to leave the warmth of the pub to smoke.

The upside: Bar staff and patrons who dont smoke are free to work and socialise in a reasonably healthy environment.

I'm an ex-smoker but I'm not anti-smoking, if you wanna smoke, go right ahead, it's your body. But come on guys, be reasonable. You cant have such a thing as a non-smoking section in a bar or restaurant. Non smokers, ex smokers and wannabe give up smokers will tell you quite truthfully, that you can smell a lit cigarette from 50 feet away on a breezy day. That's out in the open air, so how can a person smoke a cigarette in a closed environment (bar or restaurant) do so, without affecting someone else who is seated in the same area, albeit 50 feet away with air conditioning or extractor fans working away? It's not possible. The best that you can hope for is that the air in the non-smoking section is not as 'poisonous' as in the smoking section. Hey..... 'AS POISONOUS'??? I thought we were talking about going out to enjoy ourselves! Maybe you think poisonous is too strong a word? What word would you use in its place?

I also think that bringing up other issues such as alcohol abuse, car pollution and poverty only serves as a smokescreen (pardon the pun). Sure they also need to be addressed but not in this thread.

I don't smoke and I do sort of aggree with the ban. Only because I can't stand smelling of smoke after a night out and whenever I go out I always get a cig burn!! They hurt like hell and I have a nice scar just about my left boob from one of the burns!

Or on the other hand....What about the money the NHS will save on NOT having to treat all the diseases and illness linked and caused by smoking including those directly caused by passive smoking?

Food for thought?

Im happy about it especially in places where food is served x

My only grumble about the smoking ban is that fact it will take 18 months to imlpement! I hate smoking, hate smelling of it after a night out and hate the fact that smokers make such a fuss!! There's loads of things you are only allowed to do in your own homes if you think about it.... Also, when the seatbelt laws were introduced plenty of people complained about being told what to do - but guess what? That law has saved thousands of lives.....

If it means my kids grow up without being exposed to cigarette smoke or the image of smokers to copy, then that can only be a good thing as far as I'm concerned.

I am a smoker and can honestly say i couldn't give a hoot what they do...they can take my space, they can slap a ban on me, they can spoil my enjoyment...but they can never take my freedom !!! if i wanna fag i will have a fag....even if it will be in the car park freezing cold with snow and rain making me hair all frizzy...lol

I have never smoked. But when I had my daughter the midwife asked me if I smoked I said no I never have, she asked me if I would like to see the placenta, when I looked at it she explained to me that it showed that I had the equivalent to ten fags a day!
My husband smokes but never in the house!
So this could only public places and relatives homes so yes I totally agree with the ban.
Can’t wait!!

I think people assume that non smokers dont go out for a drink.
this is not true.
More non smokers would go into pubs that have a smoking ban. and there could actually be a majority rather than the other way so i think it will be better for business in the long run. there are a lot of people in our village who would love to have a smoke free drink.

I have never smoked and to be honest I detest it. I am pleased with a ban in public places. Sorry all smokers, Roy Castle died from passive smoking, he died of lung cancer and never smoked so it has been proven that passive smoking is a killer. We talk about peoples rights but I have a right to go into a pub or restaurant and not have to have to put up with my clothes, hair stinking, having itchy eyes and needing to use my inhaler beacause I am an asthmatic. I dont affect a non smoker by sitting in a bar and having a drink but a smoker affects me.It's a shame that smoking does affect people but it does and I do sypathise with smokers but maybe it will be good incentive for some to pack it in.

my thoughts exactly.

Seanny, I was pleased to see the Ireland side come across. I have been to Dublin (love it  ). The first time I was amazed at how busy the pubs / clubs were despite the ban. I went with 3 freinds, all of whom smoke, it was so easy to be outside with them because some of the pubs had patio heaters out! Yeah there were loads of people on the street, but no more than any other busy town centre - although the point about local pubs next to houses could be a bit of b****r - perhaps landlords should be prepared for that.. . .?

I am an ex smoker and always thought that I was a 'considerate' smoker. You know waht tho' since giving I wonder if there is such a thing. Oh, OK so you don't smoke round friends houses or blow smoke in the direction of others but do you pass it on anyway?

When you exhale do you empty lungs of the smoke inhaled? you continue to exhale smoke even after you have finished your cigarette. Even when with the friends who don't smoke you will have been smoking all day, in the car on the way (to make up for the ones you won't be able to have while you are out - done that! ) so every time you breath out while you are with them are you subjecting them to passive smoking?

I can smell it when friends arrive and I can still smell it the following day - even though they don't smoke indoors when they are here - it's on their clothes, in their hair - horrible!

As with all arguments there are two sides but from my point of view I am glad I gave up and welcome the ban - I have damaged my self enough already I do not want continue.

love Scooby x
