Hi All

I just wanted to see if anyone makes a living from Spray tanning alone?

I mainly do make up and tans and am wondering if its wise to think about leaving my full time (non beauty) job to try and make a living from tanning and make up..

I am qualified Level 1&2 and so can do other treatments but prefer the make up and tanning but I am realistic that I may need to do other treatments to bring in the cash..

I know it will depend on area and bookings but just wanted a general idea
if it can be done realistically

Thanks in advance xxxx

Hi - I have found that spray tanning is very much a 'seasonal thing' to really earn out of it. You will notice that it has it's 'highs' and 'lows' during the year and I always make trainees aware of this, so as not to mislead them into thinking they are going to earn mega bucks day in day out! Obviously you will only get out of it what you put in.

Not only that but you need to consider your health and wrists/fingers (didn't quite know how to word that one). With the constant pull of the trigger you are overloading the mechanics of the finger joints, so need to keep yourself fit as you could, potentially - I'm not saying definately - risk some uncomfortableness to the hand joints.

Obviously this doesn't always apply - I am just saying from experience.

Not only that but wouldn't it be boring to have no variety!

I have found it to be very very popular where I am with huge demand all year round.

I believe it will only get bigger and bigger as more of the larger companies are promoting year round tanning.

You can add on other things too such as brow threading and eyelash extensions so that you have a few more strings to your bow and more chance of income.

Thanks Guys..

I have a real good job at the mo but my fella is in Leeds and Im in the Midlands and its been 2 yrs up & down the motorway so thinking of ways I can start again in a new place when the job market is so rubbish.and i love my sideline business i have with tanning & make up.I wish I could pick my job up and take it to Leeds and still have my little business at the same time but cant..

I do tinting and brow shapes to fit with the make up also..

I want to do eyelash extensions and toying with getting on a CND course..

I love the tanning and its doing well considering I am working full time and havent done loads advertising and I adore the make up side of things i think its being scared to take the plunge whilst the economy is bad..rock & hard place..

Thanks for your replies xx

Spray tanning is the main treatment that I promote as it is quick easy money and theres not a lot to carry.
This then leads to the clients wanting other treatments so I was jam packed with clients all the time and was working until 12 at night at one point.
I have since moved and nobody in my new area seems interested. I have done everything possible to advertise for new clients but had no joy.
If I were you id test the waters first. Do leaflet jobs/advertise where ever you can and see how popular it is in your area first. You could advertise for evenings at first. I do find evenings more popular with spray tan clients as they like to just sit in their dressing gowns once sprayed xxx

Thanks Kylie I have kind of had a look round the local area up North and there is a salon in the village I potentially would be moving to but people in the area dont rate it..
I'm worried about doing a leaflet drop up there unless I am living there encase someone calls me wanting a midweek appointment whilst Im still here and I cant offer it or any other day in the week and then they wont come back if that makes sense as im not flexible and mobile you have to be flexible..

I do a lot of evenings here at the mo so thats cool its just hard to gague how it would be up there without advertising but i dont want to look unflexible..

I hope things pick up for you xxxxxx

Hun just wanted to add that I have set up and ended businesses around the South of England due to my ex's job (forces) and have had no problem starting but a problem finishing them as you have all your lovely clients.

Just thought I'd add that in if you ever did move. Don't ever be afraid it wouldn't work. I live near Leeds and am quite busy. hth's xx

I find that I am busy all year round too, summer and Christmas being headless! I thought January would be dead but I did 18, thought Feb would be worse but i've done more than January! :green:

I do have a day job though, work mornings in an office but this suits me as most of my clients want evenings or weekends anyway and I dont want to rely on them as it is not guaranteed income, at least with the office I know what I am getting at the end of the month.

Thanks guys

Its been good food for thought its just scary but you only live once don't you and if I dont try I will always wonder what if...

This site always helps when you are struggling so thanks everyone!

xxxxxxxx

Leeds is a big place and I think you will find high demand for this there, plus if you dont mind travelling there is near by York, you could maybe cover all West Yorkshire and some of South and North Yorkshire too. That is if you did decide to take the plunge and move there. Leeds have a good college there as well if you ever were looking to gain more.

I must say spray tanning is the best thing i have ever trained in. For several reasons - 1. Its quick and easyer than other treatments. 2. Its very good money 3. You can do parties etc and earn bulk money. 4. You also get to be brown 24/7 5. Its so popular.

I will say though around summer time its not that busy as usual but still its a good flow.

I worked doing spray tanning full time and it works great for me i then lead onto doing lash/brow tinting (which isnt too popular for me) I then trained in mani/pedi but havent actualy provided this for clients yet but in the process of doing this!

But definatly go for the tanning you wont regret it!!

Thanks everyone I really feel loads better now xxx

Could I also say promote tanning parties! Great income, instant, one nights work, easy and a great laugh.....

I have just started renting a room in a salon and I pay £100 a week, but thats for unlimited use of the salon, I have my own key and they provide all the drinks and reception duties. SO I think it's a good idea. I'm just really keen to get the business of the ground. Has anyone got any suggestions. I've had a look through some of the threads about promoting the business but I want to steer away from mobile work.:Scared:
I have just reduced my hours at my fulltime job so that I now have fridays off. This means that I'm at the salon in the evenings and Friday and Saturday afternoons.
I would like to give up my other job and do this fulltime, but I want to try and build up the tanning business over the next 3-5 months.
