We all know they're 'naughty'... BUT!

I'm interested to know how many geeks use them? How often? Its getting to that time of year again! Do you regard sunbeds like everything else naughty (i.e. smoking, drinking, fatty food?) Everything in moderation and all that?

Would love to hear your thoughts geeks.

i stay well away from them. I used to be totally addicted. i know that sounds daft but i actually had a major problem. i wouldnt go on a night out unless I had been for at least 3 sunbeds that week. I'd go between 3 and 4 times a week for 12-16 minutes each time, sometimes i'd even go tiwice in the one day. first to a poor quality one local one then to a real high powered one or one that had ben re-tubed. When i look back on it i cant actually believe i went that much and spent that much money on them!! I'd love to go for one but im scared id end up like i was before. Gives you such a confidence boost.

The only time I use a sunbed is a few weeks before I go on holiday to prepare my skin so I don't burn. I've heard this is a myth but it actually works for me. Plus who wants to be pale on the beach:biggrin:. A tan does make you feel good though. Most of the time I use fake tan.

I'm going on holiday in 3 weeks so have started using a sunbed to get a decent base tan before I go. I tan really easily anyway but would burn if not careful or if in the sun for too long and we definitely don't seem to be having much sunny weather here to start me off! The ones I've been going on are high powered and the longest session available is 12 mins. I started on only 4 mins then did a 5 min and a 6 min the following week. Last week I did 3 7 min sessions and today did an 8 min one. I'll be doing another 8 minute tomorrow then 2 x 9 min ones next week and maybe 2 x 10 min ones the week after just before we go unless I'm happy with my colour or a miracle has happened and we have some nice weather!! I won't use them again until next year to start me off again.

Interesting ladies!

I've always been quite against them, but i have to say i am very tempted.

I'm milk bottle white and would definitely need to start off at the minimum if i was to go on.

My skin takes a spray tan ok most of the time, but this isn't always convenient. Tan out of a bottle makes NO change to my skin whatsoever, think i'm a tad DHA resistant. Thing is i love having a glow, feel so much more confident with a tan

I use to go on about once a week but now go on once a month in the summer or once a week leading to holidays. We don't get sun very often so I don't see a problem getting some from a sun bed, it makes me feel good just wish it were that hot normally :) x x
I also use them as don't use fake tans as not great with chemicals so only way for a bit of colour now and again x x

You would be fine but you must start at only a few minutes and build it up slowly if you are very pale. I can totally see how people get addicted! It does make you feel good!

I used to go about 3-4 times a week for 12-16mins at a time. I was obsessed! It just made me so happy, the smell and everything I loved!
I don't go these days cos I'm fair and I know i'd have to go on 3 or 4 times before it shows so I can't be bothered!

beautyqueen88 I'm glad I'm not the only one who was obessed with them.

I use sun beds. I would like to use fake tan out of a bottle but i cant reach my back and no one is available to help me. Plus I don't have the time to prep, tan, dry, then wash it off before I start my day (I leave it on overnight)

I love the sunbeds. I suffer a bit from SAD and getting a few minutes of light can completely turn my attitude around from depressed, not wanting to do anything/see anyone to being on top of the world and high as a kite for a few days.

I use a Sun shower probably every other week. Nothing better on a cold rainy day! I also give myself a spray tan when I can be bothered.

I do feel guilty about the while uva tan thing, but they have them in the hairdressers where I have my room, so too easy!

I started getting little white patches on my skin where it was affecting the pigmentation! So I thought I'd better stop lol x

Yip had that too.

Ive never used a sunbed and considering they will be illegal where I live from 2014 I'm not likely to either. I live in Australia so skin cancer is a big concern here but research has proven that using a sunbed just 10 times in your life dramatically increases the risk of skin cancer so for me I don't really think its an everything in moderation thing. I mean, 10 fatty meals over a lifetime isn't going to risk your life. But still think to each their own. If some one wants to use a sunbed, it's their choice, it's not going to affect me.

One thing I have never done and never will do is go on a sunbed. I'm the palest of the pale but I love it and if I do want a bit of colour it will come from a bottle.
I am dead against sunbeds and hopefully they will be banned here in the UK at some point in the near future.

I used a sunbed about 15 years ago before my wedding, had half a dozen sessions just for a glow and to keep the skin on my back spot free.

Wouldn't touch them apart from that though, I view them like a fast-track route to skin cancer.

I ve always always been very careful. Ive always slapped on the suncreams every half hour when abroad and I love a tan, till I got skin cancer. My specialist reckons it started years ago as the damage was already done. My op is in a couple of weeks and yes Im scared. I would never judge anyone fir wanting to go on a sunbed but please please be careful.

Interesting thread (& pleased to read everyone replies have been professional & no bitchy comments lol)
Hairy Fairy - Sorry to hear you sad news, hope your operation goes well xx

I rent a beauty room in a sunbed shop.
I haven't been on a sunbed in probably 18 months, but I have used them before & have used them frequently.

Before I go abroad I always start using sunbeds maybe for a month prior. I have always found it gives me a base colour, slowly gets my skin used to heat & I never ever burn whilst away.
If I wasnt to do this I compare it to "binge" tanning, not had no sun all year+ then go abroad & get it every day for a week! So personally I find it best to slowly introduce it to my skin before.
I also have a skin condition on my leg, which I used to regularly have a PABA light treatment on, it never helped it, but I found sunbeds did.

I do also find I do feel so much better with a tan too.

I have a client who is a nurse & she said there is no truth in the fact sunbeds are good for acne, pysrosis, oily skin etc (which I thought were good for)
Whereas years ago doctors used to recommend for this.

Did you all know T.V's & computers give of UVA too? - I only learnt this recently!! X

I am so sorry to hear this, I guess sometimes we think we are bullet proof but hearing your story we can see it can happen.
I hope all goes well with your op and I will think twice before I go on one. X x x
