Hi geeks, Im living in Cyprus and I'm thinking about some nail technician online course. There is a lot on internet and I'm not sure now. Very good look essential nails courses but they are quite expensive. The most interesting seems to by course from Stonebridge associated colleges thorugh elearn.uk

I will be happy for any comment as I would like to start my study. Thanks

Have a read of this thread before you decide to go with stonebridge college http://www.salongeek.com/nail-geek/79788-help-need-get-refund-course-i-signed-up.html

Essential Nails may seem expensive to you but it has no additional costs except for the top-up of refit nails. Plus they are one of the better Home Learn courses there is. Their student support is excellent too and i can highly recommend them if Home Learn is where you want to start xx

If i finish en courses, can i open my own business as nail technician or i will have to finish some proper school based course? I do not know how good is the qualification from essential nails. Thx

You would have to check the law about this in your country. In Greece you wouldn't be able to!

I try to check, but I have such feeling that if I wouldn't be able to in Greece, the Cyprus will be the same. Thanks

I did the Stonebridge course which is good for the theory, but for practical experience you had to take an additional course (to the tune of a further £200 odd pounds) so i got myself a nail trainer and copies of the essential nails training videos so that i could practice and i produced good results, but i still ended up going to college just for the reassurance that i was doing everything correctly and get the confidence to work on 'live' people, so in my case it was a false economy.

But speaking from experience, you really need the practical before you set out with your own business and working on paying clients. hth's :)

Hi...
The best thing you can do for yourself is to get official certification that is world recognized.

In Cyprus, you should contact Helen on 96751141 - or [email protected]

they offer training courses from CND.

Hope this helps :]

I have read that link regarding the stonebridge course and can add something to that. I worked through the stonebridge course myself as something to do while bored at home through pregnancy and I recieved 2 qualification the ASET one that was described and the certificate from NCFE which is a recognised examining body so I couldnt see why you wouldnt get insurance

Home learning courses are fantastic for learning and getting into non practical careers, but I would never do or advise anybody else to do a home learning course for learning any sector of the beauty industry.

What if you are doing something wrong whilst practising? No-one will be there to tell you what you are doing wrong or how to correct it. You may think your nails are fantastic while practising on your plastic hand but then you pass your course and start working on jo public and come across all sorts of problems and won't have a clue how to fix them. Luckily you are already on salongeek so have that option to get advice, but you still could be making mistakes such as overexposure etc that you just won't realise you are doing unless some-one has seen you work and is there to help and guide you.

Get in touch with a reputable company in your country for a class in your area, you have already been given the details for CND.

Good luck

Just as a bit more info: ASET is specific to Aberdeen and specialises in more manual careers
NCFE (as far as I am aware) is not recognised by the Hair and Beauty Industry Authority and doesn't appear to ;list Beauty Therapy or Nail Services in their qualifications
