Hiya geeks

I bought my lappy last year and got a year's free gold subscription to Norton internet protection with virus protection, firewall etc.

this ran out so I deleted it and bought in AVG which has always offered good free protection, it now only offers very basic protection for free but gave me a free 28 day full protection trial and I can go down to basic protection after that. As I was doing this I saw that if I signed up to an affiliate organisation I could infact get free full AVG protection for a year. I decided to go with love films and was also given an offer with them (one month free).

My battery died as I was filling in the forms so I left it. Next day I get a welcome email from lovefilms support saying I didn't complete the forms so I finished filling them in and we settled down to choose our films.

To cut a long story short, I have not received my free upgrade with AVG as they are saying its nothing to do with them and to contact love films and love films are saying its nothing to do with them and to contact AVG. i have cancelled my subscription with lovefilms and imo I joined under false pretentions.

AVG have now denied any link to lovefilms! This is after I asked for details to complain to ombundsman.

so, my question is what internet protection have you got and do you recommend it?

I can only speak as a consumer - I have low-level computer skills.
When I tried to install an internet protection it "fought" against Norton, which I thought had expired. I took my laptop to a really good guy who recommended AVG. At the moment I only have the basic, and it's been OK.
There will be geeks with far more experience, so perhaps you should wait to see their posts. I have seen some great advice from Ruth.

I have always had awful trouble with Norton whenever ive had it installed. It used to often block internet connection completely in some places for me and always used to fight against programs that were perfectly fine. Plus I found that it slowed my machine waay down. Thats just my experience of it of course.

I have had better luck with McAfee in the past and also AVG (although you and them dont seem to be besties right now lol)

There is a great PC magazine that maintains what it calls the A-List of software, machines, bits to plug into machines etc.

At the moment the current winner in this field is Trend Micro Titanium. I have just moved to this and am finding it very good.

You will need to uninstall any other Anti-Virus / Internet Security software first. In my experience Norton is on of the worst programs to use - causing more headaches then its worth.

Hi, we use one called avast...it is a free download. In the past we had a computer completely shut down by a virus that ate its way into the start up programmes so every time we cleared it the restarted the computer it re-infected. We had it all sorted in a computer shop and this is what they recommended for us.That was about 3 years ago and we have never used anything other than this since and have had no problems. hth

Eset all the time. Best ever!!!

Hi

Being Comptia A+ Cert In computing, I would recommend Kaspersky Av, you can purchase a disk for about £20 from PC World which will cover up to 3 PC's. Please don't buy this product from #Bay:rolleyes:
I have used this av for about four years now and not had one bit of bother with it.
The product support is fantastic too, as you can speak with normal down to earth advisers.

Hope this helps with your choice:wink2:

Try AVG free.
I found that all the top names slowing down my connection.

Cheers

A friend of mine is in the computer business and I asked him the exact same question. His response was

'Go with AVG Free, it will be fine unless you go looking for the sites out there with industrial strength porn or want to download all the latest cinema releases the day they come out'

I have always used it since on my home computer and never had a problem.

Try AVG free.

Not everything in the world is free, you also get virus's & trojans free too:lol:even just by downloading a simple screensaver or toolbar.

Norton is good, but if you like a slow pc, as it is memory hungry.

If you de-select port 80 (http) & 443 (https) your connection will not be slow anymore & your pc will still be protected:cool:.
If you are downloading mp3s from Limewire, then yes, be prepared to be infected:eek: AVG free is like offering your pc / laptop to the threats that are about:eek:

We use Kaspersky in our office and we also recommend it to all of our clients.

You can buy it on Ebay for £23 or there may be some deals on the high street... Happy hunting!

Hope that helps!

For me personally it is Nortons. I've had no problems with them at all, no slowing down of computer and just runs in the background nicely.

I've just come away from Kapersky and never again, seriously. That did slow my computer down plus hubby's so much so he nearly threw his computer out of the window. Only way he could communicate with them was via ticket numbers. He continually asked them to phone and talk him through the problems but they never did. When he called them it was a premium line.

Nice reading everyones choice though, just goes to show how different we all are.
