Can any one help? i have been asked by a 15 year old girls father if i will allow her to go on the sunbed to clear her psoriasis. Normally i wouldnt allow anyone under 16 on the sunbed re health and safety, but in the circumstances do you think i should allow? He said the hospital have advised her to go and use the hospital sunbeds specially for psoriasis but he hates waiting and travelling and parking ect when he can just pop into shop?
not sure what wattage the hospitals beds are and would this make a difference?

please help as i dont know what to say to him yet?

I would of got something in writing from gp or hospital and permission to state that the girl can use the sunbed and for how long. And the condition that the girl has in black and white.

Hmmm.
There are so many downsides to sunbeds that I'd not want to allow this. What does your insurance company say? How do you know whether the hospital sunbeds are the same output and frequency as yours?

She must use the hospital facilities, mainly because she will be under medical supervision, which is very important especially for a 15 year old. There really is no question - NO .

Make it very clear why it the medical supervision is needed as he may just take her to another salon where they say yes. The beds may be different in the hospital as others have stated and also they need to monitor her use and may change her treatment later on. If she stops going to the hospital then she will drop off the radar.

thanks for the reply, its exactly what i thought. i doubt the hospital machines are as powerful as normal sunbeds.
thanks i'll tell him she must do it at hospital:)

My local doctor used to send his teenage daughter to my salon to use the sunbed for her psoriasis. It did help the girl immensely. It's such a shame when salon owners are so scared of litigation that they just say "no", before exploring all the possibilities, when the client may potentially reap such benefit from the occasional treatment.
For the girl's sake it's worth investigation ~ what if it was your daughter?

I suffer from psoriasis and the only thing that clears it is the sun or sun bed. When I was younger I was also advised by the doctor to go on the sunbed. My mum used to take me twice a week for 3 minutes at a time. I would just get something in writing to cover yourself.
:)

I have psoriasis and I have been on the sunbeds to try and clear it up and it did but i was goin on for 9 mins at a time and it was costing me a fortune. I don't agree with sunbeds so as soon as it cleared up i gave the sunbeds up. It has now returned and I begrudge paying out for sunbeds again so have gone back to doctors who has refered me for the light treatment and I am now going up to the hospital and I started on them at 7 seconds, by end of week i am up to 12 seconds and I can already see a difference. I would stick with the hospital instead of paying for sunbeds they can keep an eye on the psoroasis and how it's reacting to the light and they will also make sure the child doesn't go on for too long.

hi guys my background is RGN<RMN,SCM, Ayurvedic specialist, just for the record:) Th hospital light machines are totally different to the sunbeds, think about it these machines are used for babies with jaundice and young kids with SAD they are closely monitored and yes you are right it is seconds not mins that you are on, and you do notice a difference very quickly, I would encourage her to go to the hospital beds, apart from all that there is a very high risk of infection, especiaally if she is at the weeping stage, hope this helps with your decision:hug:

I have been a Psoriasis sufferer for over 30 years (at some points 85% covered). The hospitals offer PUVA treatment which is a sunbed but the UV rays are different from an ordinary sunbed.

IMO, to have a bit of colour lessens the Psoriasis from being so evident, therefore making the sufferer feel better about themselves, so yes, I do use a sunbed for this reason as it does make me feel better about myself.

As it is said to be stress related (or so the medical profession say) then anything that makes you feel better about yourself has got to be worthwhile.

We have several customers with psoriasis who came with doctors notes, advising the use sunbeds. However these people are not 15. I do not believe there is any insurance company that would cover a 15 year old to use a sunbed, so even if a parent produced a doctors letter I would still refuse.
