Flippin' heck - triple time?!
Why?!

Flippin' heck - triple time?!
Why?!

Because it is boxing day and she is only going to open for her to have a few treatments. I don't know how much her prices are in the first place and you should never under value your time.

When I was looking for a hairdresser for my wedding day (bank holiday Monday) I was quoted £75 for my hair and £50 for anyone else. I told them I was only getting a blow dry and so were my daughters but was told that those prices are standard regardless of what I was getting. They then added on the additional £25 mobile fee.

Their normal fee for a blow dry was £20!

What I do on days out of salon or days outwith my normal hours is charge an hourly rate. So that's another suggestion. Triple time is taking the pee. If your staff asked you to be paid triple time to work on boxing day what would you say?

Whatever you decide I would ask for the payment in advance. If you are going to the trouble of opening the salon then I think its wise to get payment up front just incase she changes her mind on the day.

I would probably charge her the standard price if I was happy to go in on my days off. All the spas that are open on bank holidays still charge the same price although I do know of some that charge more on Fri, Sat & Sundays so it really is your call and I doubt she will think you are being unreasonable if you do charge a little extra.

I think you need to decide that if you were employed would you be prepared to go into work on this day for your standard rate of pay or would you expect extra ?

If you want to be able to charge extra in a way you can demonstrate the extra cost charge for your time. Based on your treatment structure you should be able to work out an hourly rate for your time.

So now total up how long it will take you to get to and from the salon, how much time you need to allow for preparation before she arrives, do you need to turn on any heaters? For example towel warmers. Then how long will it take you to clear away afterwards. Then you can charge her for this.

And I would expect a non refundable deposit. You can't make any plans for this special treatment time, so if she cancels you are still inconvenienced.

Deffo charge more. No, big spas don't charge extra - that's cos they're open anyway! Same as you wouldn't expect to pay more in Sainsbury's on a Sunday - it's their choice to open.

To get somewhere to open specially just for you is a privilege and you should charge accordingly x

I know of a few spa's who charge more for their treatments Friday -> Sunday. Same spa, same treatment, same therapist - just a peak service day. Personally I prefer the other days so that the chillout areas and heat treatments are quieter.

I Would charge Double.
I have charged Double with leisure equipment from my husband's business, like a chocolate fountain at New Years eve, or adult bouncy castle, people have been happy to accept the prices for that so why not for a wedding?
I have a part time job with M & S outlet store, I am not working Boxing day, but they do pay triple time for that. Pity it's not my day in!!!
Hope it goes well for you what ever you decide x x  x x

I don't think it is taking the pee at all, if she is charging say £60 normally for 3 treatments then is it worth going in on boxing day, heating the salon, spending extra time setting up for the treatments and spending around 2 and a half hours to earn £120? I'd stay at home with my family and enjoy my day off.

If you don't value your time then no-one else will

years ago when i was a humble dogs-body employee i used to be paid triple time for work on public holidays and double time plus time off in lieu for bank holidays, nowadays they way companies operate contracts are often tailored to avoid having to do this for thier staff.

IMO you need to decide what you are willing to work for that day giving up your time on a holiday and put it to your client and she has a choice to book with you or not.

but that the end of the day you are entitled to your holiday just as she is entitled not to be ripped off but she is under no obligation to book if she isnt happy with your terms

im sure you can find a happy medium to suit you both.

good luck :)

Good for you for getting three times your normal wage for bank holiday working. I hope you haven't reduced your expectancy for triple rate just because you are now self employed as your time is not worth any less than it was as an employee!

Isn't it interesting how we're all so different on here - what a variety of thoughts on just one matter!!

Boxing Day was my most lucrative day of last year - 5 big appts (I work solo so that's a lot for me) I wouldn't have dreamt of charging even a penny more. These are my clients and I was happy to do it for them.

Mind, I also worked Xmas day and will do the same again this year. But then I don't have little ones and I'm not religious so it's no big deal to me.

The only time I charge more (+50%) is late evenings but that's only as I once had a guy who messed me around, getting later and later. Otherwise Sundays, Mondays & holidays I just have a one hour minimum booking (£50).

At the end of the day if I'm busy or don't want to do it I can always say 'no'; if it's our business it's always our choice to take any booking...

Wow, no wonder he used to take you for granted, you don't have any time off so he must have thought you were not busy. If that works for you then fantastic, but I'm not as accommodating to my clients as I used to be and you know my business has grown because of it.

Just wondering why you charge more for someone wanting a standard wednesday evening appointment but you don't charge extra for christmas day or boxing day? Just because you don't have kids doesn't mean you should not have any time off though. x

I'm working on 1st Jan as one of my clients is getting married so i'm going to do her wedding make-up. I'm not going to charge more, it was my choice to do it and I think it's a lovely way to start a new year so want to help out!

That is nice of you but don't let people take advantage of your good nature. You're a business at the end of the day and the idea is to make money as well as remaining true to yourself.

I will try to accommodate clients as much as I can but won't let it interfere with my family life, other commitments, sanity, profit or business sense.

A few years ago, some client of mine referred a lot of people to me, which was great and she was rewarded for it, but along with the "go to Tracy she'll do a fabulous treatment at a really good cost (so they were expecting cheap, which I'm not!!) and she'll fit you in even if she is not working"! Followed were requests for bank holiday, late evenings other than my usual Wednesday and Thursday late clinics, Monday (my day off) and Sunday. The icing on the cake was when someone asked if I could do a treatment for them on the morning of my wedding day (she was invited though but that is still taking the piss).

But that's exactly it, Smooth; it's my choice!

I'm happy to work Xmas day because to me it's just another day. I'm happy to work into the evenings because that suits my body clock. I'm happy to massage into midnight, but I expect to be paid more for that.

It's what works for me.

I have plenty of time off. I don't start my week until 2.30pm on a Tuesday and I enjoy every morning off. I'm a night owl so really get into the swing of things around mid-afternoon. If I want a night off to socialise I can take it.

But that's the beauty of being your own boss, isn't it? And surely it's better and healthier to be true to who we are than try to fit some imposed 9-5 standard?

As my first comment said - isn't it interesting how many different takes there are on this?

Very different takes honey yes, my line of work is not 9 - 5 either but I value my time more than any potential client. I can expect to get a very healthy profit per treatment but I still don't cater to my clients. Why? Because they can take the piss, they pay around £300 per treament and expect to be treated like royalty, well it is never going to happen, but they do get respect, empathy and a knowledgeable practioner. The profit from one client is not worth the time and effort put into it to be honest as I love my family more than any amount of money in the world.
