Was wondering I am a beauty therapist who does nail enhancements as well.

Do you think you can be expert in both?Or do you think that you can only be good at one as you could never get enough practice in both fields?

I dont want to leave my profession as a beauty therapist but...I love doing nails and feel that I am just not getting enough practice in the nail enhancement side of things.

If I left the beauty therapy industry, I know I could be 100% focused on nail enhancements.

What do you think, can I be good at both?Could I ever do both and be good at both without jepardising either professions?

How do you beauty therapists that do nail enhancements manage to be good at both,or are you??????

If you have a passion for both Babs, I don't see why you can't be great at both. Go for it!

Like anything in life... Surely the more experience you get, the courses you attend, the more 'expert' you will be. Well I can't see why you couldn't be anyway and do both! IMO

I want to,but it's so hard,I just dont get hardly any chance in the salon,I need to keep up with the practice but I dont get the oportunity.

I am really hoping to get more sets when I start with the mobile business(in between my salon job)

I am starting to feel like I am nowhere near at the place I should be for how long I have been qualified,it's scary.

I see what your saying but if you work a lot of hours in a beauty salon,as I do,dont get to do many nail enhancements then how can I ever be really good?

This is what I am saying, how do I get more experience when I am working the hours I do as a beauty therapist?

Maybe I need to make a choice.??

sorry but i think it's one or the other. i think this mainly because i think many prefer one or the other. personally i prefer nails and therefore i think i will become an 'expert' in them because it interests me more than beauty does. i don't think i'm rubbish at beauty and i think you can do both but i son't think you can be fab at both. xxx

This is a difficult area because so many places these days offer everything under one roof and if you specialise in one are you may find that you could lose your client to a one stop shop.

I agree that it is better to specialise in one area as nail enhancements are so complex, but at what risk!

But maube you can be very very proficent at both. Maybe you should try to split your time between both a bit more, do some more training. Anyways, how can you really define 'expert'? You may produce a better set of nails than someone who has been doing them for longer and full time!!

It's not as easy as that,If I am working for somebody else(which I am)then how can I dictate what I am going to do?

Its not about the training, whats the good of me training more if I am not able to practice what I have learnt?I will be getting lots more training though,as I feel you can never get enough,well...I cant anyway.

My nails aren't horrendous or anything but I know that they have a lot to be desired.

I dont know....maybe you can only be really good at one or the other.

Ah I see.. No that would be difficult working for someone else. Do you have the time to to do it outside of work? What do you prefer or what could you see yourself doing in the future?

I offer both Babs, I would class my self as Nail Tech first, Beauty Therapist second - my business is split about 75% nails and 25% beauty.

I only offer treatments I am competant in, confident with and comfortable doing to the best of my abilities. I can honestly say with the right training and experiance you can be good at anything you want to do but natural flair and talent is needed to make it in the nail industry. Let face it you could teach most folk to wax in a couple of hours max (the physical task of waxing, not talking about theory side) but consider how long it takes to train and be proficient in nails?

I do think however sometimes Beauty Therapists get into the realms of jack of all trades, master of none - you cant possibly be good at everything esp. if you have 40 different treatments on offer. Better to offer a few things and be excellant at them than offer 40 and be mediocre at them all.

If you feel your heart lies more in the nail industry and you would be happier with more 'nail hours' your the only person that can make this happen. How you market your Mobile business will help - my business name is KLB Nails & Beauty and I use my nail photos for advertising so folk associate me with nails. It might be an idea to offer only nails in your mobile business as this would help with the conflict of interest with the salon.

My advice would be to have a chat with your boss at the salon about how you are feeling and see if they are willing to help redress the balance?

I see what you're saying Nemotail, but we are more 95% beauty, offering everything from non surgi facials to massage.

Basically my boss, who I class as a friend as well dosn't like enhancements. She promotes the natural nail. She always has been this way inclined.

Anyway, when anyone wants to have enhancements, she trys to tell them about the damage they do to our nails and then persuades them to have a remedial treatment, focussing on getting their natural nails back to tip top condition.:grr:

I do respect her views but I need to practice more.I dont feel I can be good at both given this situation.

I am really hoping that I get loads of enhancements in my mobile business then I can concentrate on getting better.Maybe if I do more I will make a choice and start cutting down on other treatments within the mobile business.

Interesting one this - I think you can be good at both but think you will end up best at the one you enjoy the most. However, it sounds you are like me, in that I always seem to have facials, manis etc but not as much call for enhancements - I'm not 100% sure why this is - the peeps that I see on a social basis don't have them and this generally is for several reasons

They can't do anything with them
They pop off
They are too thick
They ruin your nails

I've got to say that I originally thought along some of those lines but once I had mine enhanced by a professional - I have never looked back and can't ever believe I will be without them now - despite the fact I have pretty decent nails anyway!:D

I would say you have to look at what you really enjoy the most, it sounds like you feel a bit smothered and need to spread your wings.
When were you going to go mobile? Are you waiting to build up a larger clientelle first? Maybe you just need to bite the bullet and go out on your own, then you are answerable to no one and can really make your decisions about which treatments you want to offer. I started doing Swedish massage because it's what I saw myself doing and enjoyed it but now I've found nails and some other treatments I enjoy far more.

I think you can be good at both but you wont necessarily be. If you take beauty therapy there are many different aspects of that massage ,waxing, electrolysis, make up etc etc and you are not going to be absolutely fantastic at them all so then you could say well should i just do waxing, should i just be an eyebrow expert or masseuse or bikini barber but who can really do that.If you do nails should you only do one system .You could have all the training in the world but not be any good at nails i wonder whether this will be me but i want to try because i want a new challenge i like to make people feel good but i would also like to see fantastic nails on someone that i have done but i definately dont expect to see that anytime soon ,but i have improved a lot, each set i do lasts longer and looks better and a lot of this has been from the help i've found on this site. Also if you doubt yourself and the quality of your work you will never be happy .Your clients will let you know how good you are with their continued custom.

I have all my mobile equipment ready just waiting to sort out advertising myself(sounds a bit funny, lol)

I enjoy everything but it's finding the time for all of it.I dont know, maybe once up and running I will decide what road to take, maybe it will be both, cause I love all aspects of my work.

You have answered your own question, if you love both then there really isn't any reason why you can't be good at both. Loving something is half the battle, if you didn't really enjoy something you wouldn't be saying "should I do this or not" you would go with what you like - this isn't really coming out right but I hope you get what I mean!
Since going mobile I have given up 3 of my treatments purely because I didn't feel I could offer them properly as a mobile therapist and I can concentrate on my others, I'd still like to do them it's just not practical at the moment. I would love to have my own salon but there's too many where I live , when I get my salon the other treatments will come back into play - unless I've got totally caught up with nails (which is what I'm loving at the moment)

For me i found i was better at the beauty side so i gave up nails completly i do regret this because i love nails but i didnt have the patients and also thought i wasnt very good at them. but iv decided to get back in to it as i feel im more educated now and i think i have an understanding of how a good nail should be applied and look . I always thought the thicker it was the stronger it was but i now no this not to be true.

and Beauty therapists are part way there with the knowledge you need for a manicure.

Thanks everyone for your replies,I still dont know what road to travel down. But I am going to see how I get on with my mobile business and maybe my mind will be made up for me.xx
