Hi geeks!

I am after some advice about how to improve my concentration.:smack:

This is specific to my job - I work in an office and find the work especially dull, it's fairly basic secretarial stuff with not a lot of human contact and I am really really struggling!

Essentially I'm so bored I can't do anything, does that make sense? I lose whole hours just looking out of the window (at a tree, so not a distracting view!) and I just don't know what to do about it. Now I'm starting to worry that I'll get into trouble for not being very industrious  though I manage to get "enough" done, I suppose.

If I'm doing something I enjoy I don't have any problems concentrating! I was ever thus, at school and university I just glazed over at anything that didn't really interest me so I don't think I've got ADD or anything...help!

Any advice gratefully considered

Oh god you sound just like me - I'll sit and listen to tutors/driving instructors/meetings etc and I'm hearing what they say but not taking any of it in  I'll come away afterwards and be like "er, what?".

I've found studying wise I can only do it if I literally lock myself away from anything distracting and even then I don't know if the info's going in...

LOL, let's never set up an accountancy firm together :)

I find some things so boring my ears just won't listen or my eyes just won't read, does that make sense?

It makes me feel guilty, there's loads of people who would kill for my job at a time like this. I probably will kill if I have to do it for another 34 years til I retire :(

. . .sorry. . .what were you saying. . .?

That made me dribble tea onto some exceedingly boring documents! Which isn't any practical help but has made hometime a bit nearer :D

I am in exactly the same boat - I am so relieved I'm not the only person feeling like this!

That is why I have logged onto here for something interesting to read while I eat my lunch!

Back to the grindstone.......

I'm totally feeling this right now. I can't view this site through my work pc as it's a blocked site. So I've always got my phone out. Don't know what looks worse. Staring into space or constantly looking at my phone. I'm surprised I've never got into trouble but I work in a relaxed office.

God, even if we get our concentration back on track let's still never start up an accountancy firm together - I can think of nothing worse! I'm maths dyslexic...get numbers the wrong way round and all sorts

I'm painting such a great picture of myself

I get like this too, my job is so boring at times it brings me close to tears I swear! I work in a specialist pet food shop and some times we can go a whole day with literally nothing at all to do apart from helping and serving the odd customer. These days are good and bad, as in it's good to be getting paid for doing nothing, but then it's bad when we have to listen to the boss droning on and on and on about her dogs, ducks, rabbit, house, husbands massive wages, how she battled anorexia, how her body thermostat is shafted because of it, how she is a fully qualified beauty therapist and hair dresser but chooses not to do it (you should see her own hair, and what she describes her skin care routine as - shocking.) I could go on.
These are the days where my concentration drifts in and out, when it's in I wish I could cut my own ears off, or stab them with a pen. So I have learnt to just nod and agree every now and then.
I would give my right arm to work in a office all day but no one wants me because I don't have "experience in an office envoironment" pah!

i don't think there is anything wrong with being bored and not being able to concentrate, it's perfectly normal if there is nothing to stimulate and interest you.

i'm lucky in my job that i am either very busy doing what i enjoy, or having a laugh with one of my colleagues when it is quiet.

it's the nights that are tough on me, especially when my fella isn't here.

i tend to sit here with no interest in watching tv, reading etc...so i have decided to FINALLY try and get a place at university to study a degree - so hopefully i will have my nights filled up lol!

I'd love to do a degree, but that's never going to happen unless I win the lottery, making slow enough progress saving up to do beauty/nails (well, trying to get out of debt first but eh!)

I'm bored again this morning, I keep forgetting what I'm supposed to be doing...I've just been searching for Michelle Obama's manicure secrets on the internet (her nails look so nice!) which isn't what I'm supposed to be doing at all!

I'm doing an Open University degree in Business Studies (as well as working full time, learning to drive and level 2 beauty) and because I'm poor, so far, I haven't paid anything for it, you get loads of funding if you earn under a certain income/have dependents/benefits etc. I'm struggling a bit with motivation at the min - as obviously, there's no-one in college actually nagging you to do it with some of the earlier ones. Definately an option!
