I had my council inspection today ...... out of the blue.

Took about 15 mins, quite a bit of that taken up with conversation (including questions on various procedures, sanitisation, fittings & fixtures).

Upon completion I got the form (Skin Penetration, Hairdresser and Beauty Salon Inspection Report .... (9 sections and 51 various tick boxes).

He wanted to come back when I wasn't busy, but was quite proud to have the inspection done and questions asked while doing a client. I also don't think he's ever seen a bloke doing nails who could speak so passionately about the industry and the importance of sanitisation and disease control.

Even my client was blown away when I started my blurb.

It was a little harrowing when I knew what I was in the middle of (initially he said he was doing a survey), but I think I had more questions for him, than he had for me.

Seeing as though I sat on the Industry Competence Standards Guide Board in 1996, I knew what was to be expected (even though some of the suggestions contained in these standards I would consider outrageous) and I quickly brought him up to speed on my thoughts on what was considered simply silly (such as single use nail polish brushes and sinks to be located within 1 meter of the Nail Station).

There are quite a few things the Council can come down on you for if they wish such as (you must have at least 2 sinks), no taps (you must have a hands free way of turning on water (a flickmixer of sorts, like surgeons use to "scrub up")), the use of towels etc.

Oddly enough I was the one who brought up the subject of MMA (to which he had no knowledge). Nor had he heard of the recent televised expose on Today Tonight.

It made me feel great knowing that I had passed this inspection with no flaws and quite a bit of extra input.

It was very interesting to speak my doubts and fears concerning the direction of the industry with someone (him) that could actually do something about it.

Along with MMA, my major concern is the use and selling of blades for use on feet by the unqualified and the disinfection of footspas (and this was duly noted).

The Council are doing a sweep of salons in the Sydney area, concentrating on Nail Salons ......... and it's about time.

The worst thing is..... the highest final result is "satisfactory" and this just reminded me of my old school reports

Aw well done Carl. You deserve a massive pat on the back hunni, fancy the inspector actually learning something from you. Makes you wonder really about the people and the training that the council employ and give doesnt it.
They worry about the silly things and never the really important stuff. Hopefully that nspector will go back and mention all the things you talked about and get them included in the future inspections.
:hug:way to go babe.
Jen xx

Well done nailzoo and lets hope he has listened to you and takes it all on board.xxx

Good to know that your salon will probably now be the benchmark that this council Inspector will now measure all the other Salons he visits by.

You have set it nice and high!!

Had a customer a few years ago who sadly (for me) returned to her native country Sweden to marry.

Anyway she had a totally branded CND salon in London near Gloucester Road. I wish she was still there.

Like Carl's, you could walk into that salon any time of the day or night, busy as can be, and it would be spotless. There were stations for 4-5 technicians and not a thing would be out of place.

I KNEW I could send anyone into that salon any time and count on the fact that it would be a perfect model of how a nail salon should be ... salons like these are few and far between people!! Congrats to Carl for being one of them.

I was lucky, my salon is on the corner, and every bloody leaf in the street blows in, I had an electricity blowout the day before and the fridge defrosted (all over the floor) made me mop like mad.

Although the salon is clean, it could be alot tidier and it does get a little dusty (but then again i'm a bloke):) and there is so much crap all over the place, semi naked pictures (walls ceiling floor), many don't know where to look......

You will understand soon enough Geeg:)

So that's your secret ... the poor blokes eyes were bugging out of his head and he didn't know what to look at next!! lol Can't wait!

well done!!
Totally agree with your point on the pedicure blades...,...my best friends mum was recently going on holiday and i offered to give her a pedicure (i do not use these blades btw as i dont know how to use them safely)....she declined the offer though as she has a thing a people touching her feet . A few days before she was due to go i saw her....she had sandals on.......her heels were red raw....with literally chunks taken out....they looked sooooooo painful you wouldnt believe. I advised her to go to the doctor as She said they were really sore...i just couldnt believe what she had done to her self with a tool that she brought out of a high street chain store.
It just goes to show you how dangerous these tools are in the wrong hands!!

Dust ? leaves ? this is not good enough, I've told you time and time again just buy my ticket and I'll come and skivvy for you

I'd have liked to hear you putting the inspector through his paces - good for you:)

PS
I don't believe you got as high as satisfactory at school:green:
