I had my council inspection today ...... out of the blue.
Took about 15 mins, quite a bit of that taken up with conversation (including questions on various procedures, sanitisation, fittings & fixtures).
Upon completion I got the form (Skin Penetration, Hairdresser and Beauty Salon Inspection Report .... (9 sections and 51 various tick boxes).
He wanted to come back when I wasn't busy, but was quite proud to have the inspection done and questions asked while doing a client. I also don't think he's ever seen a bloke doing nails who could speak so passionately about the industry and the importance of sanitisation and disease control.
Even my client was blown away when I started my blurb.
It was a little harrowing when I knew what I was in the middle of (initially he said he was doing a survey), but I think I had more questions for him, than he had for me.
Seeing as though I sat on the Industry Competence Standards Guide Board in 1996, I knew what was to be expected (even though some of the suggestions contained in these standards I would consider outrageous) and I quickly brought him up to speed on my thoughts on what was considered simply silly (such as single use nail polish brushes and sinks to be located within 1 meter of the Nail Station).
There are quite a few things the Council can come down on you for if they wish such as (you must have at least 2 sinks), no taps (you must have a hands free way of turning on water (a flickmixer of sorts, like surgeons use to "scrub up")), the use of towels etc.
Oddly enough I was the one who brought up the subject of MMA (to which he had no knowledge). Nor had he heard of the recent televised expose on Today Tonight.
It made me feel great knowing that I had passed this inspection with no flaws and quite a bit of extra input.
It was very interesting to speak my doubts and fears concerning the direction of the industry with someone (him) that could actually do something about it.
Along with MMA, my major concern is the use and selling of blades for use on feet by the unqualified and the disinfection of footspas (and this was duly noted).
The Council are doing a sweep of salons in the Sydney area, concentrating on Nail Salons ......... and it's about time.
The worst thing is..... the highest final result is "satisfactory" and this just reminded me of my old school reports
